This is the only place in greater Harrisburg where you can find a gift for your inner geek. They have everything, from books to guitars to video games and outlandish merchandise. The employees here enjoy their work genuinely. They are happy to interact with customers and talk about all the wonderful things they sell. It always amazes me how they can speak technically about gaming items while recommending a book that most people have never heard of. The only downside to this place is that it doesn't have a listening space or a good book-sitting area. I like to play an instrument before I buy it, so it would be great if they had a headset with an AV cable so people could test-drive the guitar without disturbing the entire store. In this vain, many people like to read a few pages to a few chapters of a new book to see if they enjoy the content and author's tone. The store doesn't have a space where you can do this comfortably. Adding these few items would immediately push this rating from a 4-star to a 5-star.

While in Harrisburg my husband and I visited 2nd & Charles inside a local mall. I would describe this place as the love child between Barnes & Noble and GameStop. All the books, video game systems, notebooks and even the smallest versions of toys were calling out for me to buy them. Unfortunately my budget didn't account for buying out a whole store so I bought a box of 50 mystery dvds for $30 along with a pair of socks. I was able to get a 10% off coupon which was helpful in bringing my total under $50. We actually ended up visiting this store once before Hersheypark and once after because we didn't want to spend too much the first visit and have the consequence be going hungry in the park. So we spent some the first time and more when we came back. If you love stores like Barnes & Noble or Gamestop mostly to explore for hours then this store is definitely up your alley. I would 100% recommend stopping by when in the area. Would give 10 stars if I could.

Ok, this is not only an affordable place to get new/used books. It's a place to get gifts- I picked up an emotional support rubber squeak chicken for someone going thru tough times. There's everything for everyone. There is every genre of books here for fair price. There are acoustic & electric guitars, keyboards, record player, mugs, socks, CD, vinyl, stickers, tshirts, and so much more. The store is huge! I got stuff for kids Easter Basket here too. The mall is quiet since many big chains have abandoned this mall. Which is quiet sad since it's next to the busy Bass Pro.

You can get lost in the stacks across multiple levels of the buildings. There is ample seating around a performance stage and overhead in the gallery. I appreciate the layout where people can gather in the main area around the stage, but then slip away into the stacks to browse or have a quiet chat. I can buy a book and a pastry and people-watch from a table overlooking the stage or just write in peace to the sound of jazz or the gentle rhubarb of polite conversation. In Harrisburg, it is a great place to meet people who share your interests, especially during these events. I've found it easy to talk with people about various subjects, which, as this is a "scholarly" bookstore, makes a lot of sense. I've actually managed to locate a few rare tomes and art pieces here over the years. Communication, however, is spotty. I've sent several inquiry emails that went unanswered. I've made phone calls where the callback with information never came. When dealing with the staff, they are cordial and professional with the immediate sale, but never seem interested in me or my money if they have to do additional work or communicate with me. I now only approach them looking for material if other locations fall through. But overall, if you want to spend some time with the kind of books you won't find at your local B&N, dive into a complex topic with the latest academic text, or just find something new and interesting, this is worth a trip to the city.

There's a café and mezzanine seating for those looking to relax in a cozy environment. Definitely looking forward to a return visit the next time I'm in Harrisburg!

Check the days and hours before you visit. Lady Matilda and I come to the market for our meats and spices, grab a soft pretzel or three from the Amish kiosk, and see what the Bookworm has to surprise us. It's a friendly shop where they remember you and your tastes. I've converted a lot of clients and friends in the area who were quick to dismiss it as just another dirt-mall book dump. Absolutely not. The store carries the professionalism of classic independent booksellers with the fun of a friendly mom-and-pop store. Take a break from the busy market on your next visit.

There's so much to see inside, with all kinds of book genres all well-organized and easy to search. The staff was incredibly friendly and approached me twice to ask if there was something they could help me find. They knew where everything was and knew sometimes even before they'd look what was on the shelves and what wasn't (or what just sold a couple of days/weeks ago). Very insightful and their kindness made the experience even more enjoyable. Highly recommend for the used book lover!

There was a time when these things were everywhere but that time is long past. Come and check it out and pick up a few things from here. Yes it's overpriced in some areas and it's enough to almost make me drop it to four stars but I really want to support these kinds of businesses and five stars will do fine.

This shop looks tiny when you first enter (downdownstairs in a great bookshop), but don't let your first glance deceive you. As you go from one small room into another and another and another, you will realize there are plenty of places to get lost looking through old books. Some titles are in other languages (lots of German), and some are behind locked glass doors (the truly rare stuff), but most are fun, random old books with worn pages and aged leather bindings. Looking through them is fun and could help you kill a few hours for sure. So, whether you're looking for a special, rare find (in the hundreds of dollars), or in it for the look of old books on your pristine shelves ($10 and $20 aisles!), this deceptively large rare book shop should have you covered. And did I mention the hundreds of art prints?? Oh yeah, count on another hour sifting through those!
