After reading the reviews here, I have to agree with a lot of them. Stan's was a solid Saturday destination for vinyl back in the early 80s when I was in high school. I went on a vinyl crawl a few weeks back through Lancaster County and made sure to stop at Stan's. I was very disappointed in what I saw. Selection was mediocre, store was run down, prices too high, crusty, old dudes running the show... Seriously, don't waste your time here unless you are killing time while waiting for a downtown dinner/lunch reservation. Sad to say, but unless Stan's changes hands, this place will continue to be, at best, a ghost of its former self. RIP Stan's. read more

Located downtown Lancaster, this is a easy place to find. Abundant select of jazz, r&b, and rock and roll. Most items are used so prepare to dig. You will find something here! Curious: lots of items along the wall are decorative and not for sale. Prices are fair. Lots of the same used 60's, 70's, and 80's rock albums found at many stores. Inventory could use a flip and included more contemporary rock, r&b, and electronic music. Feels very dated. Good luck. read more

Stan's is a landmark in Lancaster, and a great record store. Here's what the other reviews miss when they complain about pricing: Most of the LP's that they carry are in Near Mint condition. So yes, you can find the same LP elsewhere at a lower price. But you also have to take the condition into consideration. Stan's albums grade out extremely well. read more

I have a friend who grew up with this store and swears by it, that it was *the* place to get import records back in the day. For me without that history, I'd have to agree with the other commenters about lack of selection and high prices for fairly common records. Outside of rock, when you enter the store there's a huge selection of musicals from the 50's and 60's, the kind of stuff another vinyl store I know literally gives away. I tried but really didn't find much that spoke to me, and engaging with the owner was rather off-putting. The store is what it is, but not my idea of a fun browse. read more

As a collector of vinyl I want to support record shops. Unfortunately, a shop like Stan's is not worth the price. THE GOOD... -cool storefront THE BAD... -price gouge city! Bread records $12? Yeah, ok -selection was sub par -owner, if that's who was there, didn't really seem to care that customers actually walked in Simply put, Stan's offers budget vinyl for premium prices. Although I don't like putting down a record shop I must say, pass on this place if you value your time and wallet. read more

not a bad place if you want to kill some time, but serious vinyl diggers should look elsewhere. Lame, ultracommon LPs at questionable prices, not much in the way of 7", and your typical "cranky old man" collector type running the show. I got the impression that anything interesting or of any value in the way of vinyl is probbaly being pulled and sold through other methods/venues... leaving the store stocked mostly with the dregs, roughly alphabetized and ready to disappoint. read more

My mom bought music here when she was in high school, and she's in her 50s now. Stan's is an institution, and it's my favorite place in Lancaster to buy vinyl. I regularly find stuff here that I've been searching for throughout Memphis, where I (and a considerable number of respectable record shops) currently reside. There's none of the typical also-rans that usually just take up space, and if there is anything approaching that kind of stuff (read: Kenny Rogers, Chicago, BTO), it's clearly marked and priced as bargain-bin. That being said, I guess my taste is unique as far as vinyl goes. I love metal and punk vinyl as much as the next person, but my interests as far as that are pretty limited and I really already have all of the available punk and metal vinyl that I'd be interested in. When I go to a record shop, I'm looking for classic jazz, R&B, and rock curiosities, which Stan's is overflowing with. When I couldn't find Tom Waits vinyl anywhere, I found and bought Closing Time, The Heart of Saturday Night, and Small Change at Stan's, all at once. I got a Kind of Blue reissue (Stan's stocks choice reissues) here before I even knew that one had come out. I once bought more Boyz II Men 45s here than anyone could ever want (don't judge me), and when I wanted a 45 of Strokin', Stan's was the first place I thought of, and sure enough - I found it. If you're the kind of vinyl fan that calls a 45 a 7" and has more colored records than black ones, Stan's might disappoint you. But if you're a newbie just starting to establish a collection, or an old-timer looking to relive your glory days, this would be a hell of a place to start. Quirky store. Had some fun stuff -- some oldies. It was a bit musty inside, and a little disorganized. I appreciated the small town feel to it. Yes, you can find better prices online, however, when visiting Stan's its about supporting the local business. Check it out -- but leave your wallet at home for online shopping! read more

This place was really not my kind of record store for hunting for vinyl. As soon as I walked in, it just had that dusty/moldy smell to it due to it being an old building. I will give the place this, they had a fair amount of lps, 7 inches, cds, etc. The issue I had with it is that they seem to be overpriced for even common stuff. I understand making a profit, but I felt I could find some of the records for cheaper at other spots. I had high hopes for this place, but it just did not impress me. I rather go to Angry, Young , and Poor or Mr. Suit. read more

Stan's is a little musty and dusty, but I always can find a treasure or two from my vinyl bucket list or the "I didn't know this existed, but now I need" list. However some of the used stuff is flat out over priced. For example a sealed first pressing copy of Madonna's TRUE BLUE album was priced at $40.00 while an unsealed/used copy was priced at $20.00? That's outrageous! First off, this album has been at practically every used store I've visited in Central Pennsylvania and secondly the album was reissued in 2016 on 180g vinyl with a replica of the poster included and retailed for only $22.00. Why would they think someone would purchase an original pressing for that much when a brand new reissue would suffice at practically the same price? And if the artist is dead, forget about it. The used Whitney Houston albums were so over the top in pricing, I was so glad to have found copies for way less before she passed. If you dig in the crates/bins though, long enough you'll unearth some cool finds. Just check the price on Discogs before making the decision to buy something. read more

Stan's is a good size record store that appears to specialize in hard rock/metal. They had a decent selection of other stuff but anything outside of the rock genre was hard to get to as there's loads of stuff piled in front of those racks. They have a very small selection of CDs out on the floor and a huge selection behind the counted marked Not For Sale which I found odd. They also carry a bunch of vintage 45 holders and 12" holders though they're all up high and it's not clear if they're for sale. Their selection of new vinyl is very limited. Pricing seemed about average but I walked out empty handed which was a disappointment. read more

I was in the area visiting family and always try to check out vinyl shops when I'm in a new place. Based on the Yelp reviews, Stan's seemed right up my alley ... not so much. The place is stacked with vinyl from floor to ceiling, which is awesome -- at least it would be if there was any sense of organization to the collection. I went straight to the jazz section and only found maybe 120 records there (none in my style and, oddly enough, mostly Chuck Mangione). I later on found very straight-forward jazz albums filed in rock, blues, country, etc. I asked the guy running the place, who was friendly enough, how he was organized -- he asked what I was looking for and took the time to show me a few boxes to browse through. What really struck me sideways is that when I told him I'm looking for Rahsaan Roland Kirk he made an offhanded comment about that being "esoteric" ... well, yes, it is a bit esoteric man, but you are running a f'n vinyl record store in 2013 -- esoteric is the name of the game. I find it hard to believe that you keep your head above water in this day and age based on a clientel searching for Frampton Comes Alive and Appetite For Destruction, but I suppose anything is possible. My biggest gripe is that the prices at Stan's were outrageous. I got the impression that the pricing system is to look up the highest offered price on discogs and then add 50%. I was able to find a few records I would have liked to bring home with me priced way outside any stretch of reason.
