I drive by this bookstore all the time, so today I decided to stop. As soon as I walked in that lovely old book smell reached me, and then I met a local author! I browsed through the books & finally landed on the true crime section, which peaked my interest. I grabbed a book & took it to checkout, they were polite & offered me a bag. The book price was very affordable & I even got a discount! Unfortunately the cats were hiding so I didn't get to say hello to them, but this is such a gem of a store & i recommend that you visit! read more

I always have to stop... even if its just for a clean bathroom or to pet kitties. Then, husband had blood sugar issues and they sent him a few Hershey bars no question. It's a warehouse style place brimming with books ranging from literature to fiction to history to hobbyist books. If you're looking to learn something new, this is the place! There's reoccurring and lively book clubs as well. And the friendly bookstore cats, both resident and rescue, are part of the charm... makes me love this even more! I am heartbroken over the treatment my group and I received here. We entered the building with someone who uses a wheelchair, so both doors needed to be opened at a time. We were BERATED and a male employee screamed and humiliated the group, in front of every other customer, all because we had a wheelchair user. He could have helped, or spoken to us privately, but he made the conscious decision to be mean and discriminatory. Not only is this an ADA violation, which I will be filing with the state, but just a horrible human interaction. I hope they work on themselves and their treatment of people with disabilities. I will never return and will tell others about the experience. read more

You would expect to find books in a bookstore, right? Check. You would also expect to find cats in a bookstore too, right? WTF? Regardless of what you might be expecting, that's what you're getting here at Cupboard. Lots of books and you can also go home with a cat if you so choose via their adoption process. We came here on a Sunday afternoon and the place was bumpin'. Busy as in the parking lot pretty much full type of busy. This sort of distracted us from the browsing experience due to the narrow isles and how there were people everywhere. In all fairness, we had just come from Midtown Scholar where the browsing space is exponentially larger than it is here so it's not really fair to compare but either way it's still annoying to have someone up your butt every two seconds. Big difference between here and Midtown is that Cupboard sells mountains of paperbacks and used books where as at Midtown it's all new plus many other things. Well, there's also a difference in the inventory at each place as well. Thousands of titles of smut (sorry - historical romance) here that you would never find at Midtown and things here are also not labeled as well and more jammed together which I get is probably an inconvenience of a smaller footprint. In the end we didn't buy anything as there were too many people to browse in a comfortable way and also too many kids terrorizing the cats with tail tanking, picking them up and chasing them back by the bathrooms to be enjoyable. If you go, there is plenty of inventory. I mean there are titles everywhere and easily they've got to have over 100,000+ mashed in here. Just know that the isles are narrow and on weekends it gets busy, I mean really busy which is a real PIA. If you can swing it, I think a weekday visit would offer a much better chance to interact with the staff, browse the titles and see the furry residents. (FWIW, no litter box or pet odors that I could detect while we were there.) (FWIW II, if you're into a good rail foam at the mouth experience, Norfolk Southern's massive Enola Yard is right across the street. Guaranteed you'll see some action if you hang around long enough.) read more

A hidden gem on the west shore, I past this place going to pick up my sister and from the outside knew I had to explore it! Flash forward to the weekend and my husband and I were back to explore this treasure trove of books! It's a little overwhelming at first seeing wall to ceiling shelves of books but after that you can clearly see how they are organized. Cherry on top was the fact they double as a foster/adoption rep for Castaway Critters. They didnt have any adoptable cats at the time we went but we enjoyed their 3 resident cats randomly sleeping, meowing, and following us around. I purchased a few young adult novels that were missing from my collection and husband got a few mystery books to check out. Price wise its pretty fair and on par with other used book stores. Each of mine were $4 and husbands hardcover mystery was $8. Well worth a stop if you're in the area, love book and cats. read more

First off, the outside of the building with its fantastical artwork begs for you to stop by, and when you find out there's CATS everywhere inside you can't help but fall in love! Owner lacks discernment. My son has bought books hear frequently as of late. He is 11yrs old and we stop by almost every Weds. We are trying to assemble a 12 vol. set of books before he starts the series. We purchased 6 from her, but unfortunately he picked one volume he had. I went back to exchange the book for a more expensive hardback volume that he did not have. More than willing to pay the difference plus some. Owner was rude and unreasonable. Will not go back! Cupboard Maker Books is a small non-descript building in Enola. If you've ever been on Rt 15 you've driven past it. Great selection of gently used books. Wide range of topics-- children's, photography, mystery, adventure, sci-fi, etc. Most of the books I looked at ran from 3 - 7 bucks and were in good or great shape. If I remember correctly, you get a 10% discount if you are a student. Amazing cat-walk too if you stop in, they have a siamese and two other cats :-) read more

I love the idea of this place. Lots of books. Well organized. Decent prices. Small business. Nice people. We even picked up our Spiral Path CSA deliveries at this bookstore. Here's my gripe. They have cats. Several of them. I'm allergic to cats. I used to go there pretty frequently and it never bothered me. However over the last few months the cat smell has become overwhelming. You get that litter box smell as you come through the doors. It never bothered me before, but now it's like there's "cat" everywhere. The last few books I purchased even retained that smell. The place is starting to reek. I used to go in there and shop for an hour w/out any trouble. Now I'm wheezing in about 5 minutes and have to leave. Don't get me wrong. I don't have any problem with cats and to each their own. I'm just disappointed I no longer will be able to go there, peruse for a while, and walk out with a bag of books. read more

Great used bookstore. Pricing is very fair, the selection is pretty fantastic, and it has a lot of that old bookstore charm. While I didn't find anything to purchase on my first visit, I'm looking forward to visiting again in a couple of months to see how quickly the stock changes. Would 100% recommend this place to any person who is a fanatic of reading. The place is massive with a large selection of books ranging from simple romance books to ones that specialize on hobbies. While the place was at first a bit hard to navigate, the staff was right there to help which was much appreciated. I've always loved going to Cupboard Book Makers as a kid. They are all (or mostly all) used books. I find the prices to be pretty fair. If you sign up for their mail list you won't get too much in the mail except to let you know when there's a special event or a sale, but you also get a coupon for a free book (value ten dollars or less) for your birthday. Another thing I find great about this place is that if you have books you want to get rid of, they'll look through them, take the ones they want, and give you store credit. I've also always found the employees//owners to be friendly and helpful as well. You won't always find the book you're looking for since it's used books and not Barnes and Noble or Books A Million, but that's part of what I find nice too, is going there just to look around and seeing if some old looking book catches my eye. There's something nostalgic about old, used books and Cupboard Book Makers has a great atmosphere! read more

Lots of books--old and new. Well organized by type and alphabetically. If you are looking for something specific, I'd recommend going with the author or book name. I asked about a certain book and the clerk had it on a shelf, so I can't say if they have a computer based inventory. They might just be book people--you know like the people who love books (like us!)--and just know. I could have spent all weekend at the shop. I wish there was a coffee/lunch place near by, but the area (walking distance) doesn't seem to have much other than a train track. If you love books, then go and just check it out. The day I was there they had a discount, so I probably paid less than $10 for 5 books (including a hardback of HG Wells writings, which on Amazon can run you 15-30$). As for the cats, it's part of a charity. I'm not sure if they adopt the cats out, but if you don't take a bag for your books, then they donate 5 cents or something to a cat charity. I saw two cats walking around, so be careful (as the sign says) when entering and don't let the cats out. read more

If you looking for "a good used book," then this is the place for you in Enola. Their wide selection is organized by topic and format (hardcover, paperback $3, trade paperback $4-6, etc.). The are some rare and/or antiquarian books for those interested. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and the store is clean and neat (for a used book store). Please consider that if you a looking for a particular book by a particular author, then you may be disappointed. But, If you're looking for a book of a specific genre or any book by a particular author, then you are likely to rewarded. Fair disclosure: The parking lot is a bit rugged. Slightly pricy, but I'm comparing that to thrift stores that sell paperbacks for $.80. However, if you were to order on amazon you'd probably be paying the same price after shipping; about $3-8 depending on the book. They have a TON of books and are very well organize. The place does smell a bit of cats, but it was not totally unbearable. The cats were adorable, but if you have allergies, maybe take a Claritin before you go. This is a wonderful indy bookstore with gently used books as far as the eye can see. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful and will go out of their way to help you find what you're looking for. They have great prices and frequent sales and a generous trade-in policy. Another reviewer mentioned that the store reeked of cats. I have been in there many times and have never smelled cats. In fact, if you don't see them, you wouldn't even know they're there. I think it's wonderful that they rescue cats and find permanent homes for them. This is an all-around great local business. I have to agree with Jeni that I have not smellled anything to do with cats. It's wonderful and the same lady is there on each visit. She has great recommendations and I've enjoyed each book she told me about. They have couches towards the back that I love to curl up on and get a feel of a book. 'Just returned from a visit to Cupboard Maker Books. In view of the fact that so many independent book sellers are going out of business (Chester County Book Store in West Chester) I think it's real important to support our local indys. The selection is VAST. The owner is super friendly and knowledgable. You have to see it for yourself. Regarding any parking lot issues, I would walk across the Susquehanna River to visit this store. (At low tide, of course.) Just drive and then walk around the puddles. Someone smelled a CAT??? I have seen the cats on the special catwalks, roaming the books and just sitting and looking serene. The only thing I have EVER smelled upon entering the store is BOOKS...Leather, old paper, maybe a little dust smell (good thing). The owners are active participants in rescuing stray cats who would otherwise be killed, by a car or a kill shelter. 'Gotta admire an animal lover who also loves books. One of my favorite places in the Central PA area...As an avid reader it is nice to have a place like this where you can get inexpensive used books. The owners also take the time to point you in the direction of authors who write in similar genres to what you enjoy. I have discovered so many "new" authors that I always find something different to read. My daughter and I also belong to several of the book clubs and really enjoy the chance to talk to other people who enjoy reading as much as we do. I love the fact that they are a foster home for Castaway Critters....it's always wonderful to see one of their cat get their "forever home" As a supporter of small business I would highly recommend this store to anyone that enjoys reading! read more
