It's a friendly shop where they remember you and your tastes. I've converted a lot of clients and friends in the area who were quick to dismiss it as just another dirt-mall book dump. Absolutely not. There's so much to see inside, with all kinds of book genres all well-organized and easy to search. The staff was incredibly friendly and approached me twice to ask if there was something they could help me find. They knew where everything was and knew sometimes even before they'd look what was on the shelves and what wasn't (or what just sold a couple of days/weeks ago). I had to stop in as I love a local bookstore and was blown away. It's a cafe and plant store with the best curated book selection I've seen. It's a tight collection of books and the owners were celebrating their one year opening and were giving out cookies! I would make the hour drive just to spend time in this bookstore! The staff made my friend really good about her book purchase. There's a dedicated children's section that's so cozy and instagrammable. However, we did enjoy browsing the owners collection. Once the owner greeted us, he asked if we needed help and was very accommodating. Honestly, this place is worth checking out, just to see all of the old books, the rolling ladder, and if you are in search of vintage books this is your place. It is street parking here. I ended up getting an old Girl Scout manual, and the owner let me know that he also does repairs. We will definitely come back!

This is a tiny bookstore located in the Lancaster City Public Library. All proceeds from the sales…read morego to the library fund, which makes it a worthwhile place to purchase used books. When I asked, the lady running the station told me that all the items for sale were previously in circulation or held by the library in some capacity. I purchased a few DVDs and a first edition book that were very fairly priced, and looked to be brand new. There were no markings on either to indicate they were ever circulated, so I'm wondering if some items in the shop were also donated at one point or another. While I imagine the collection doesn't change over too often, I'll try and re-visit every month or so to see what else they've added. It's worth stopping in while you're visiting the library!

I cannot convey in words just…read morehow delightful this place is - it's everything you'd hope for in a small, hole in the wall, everything's cramped but also clearly well maintained "there's hidden treasure everywhere" kind of place. The selection of used books is astounding, and the varying levels of quality was unexpected too - nothing was garbage, and while there are clearly used books here, there are also really nice, mint level books too. To give you an idea of the scope of books I'm talking about here, I left with a mint paperback of Starship Troopers from 1997, and a high quality copy of the published 1896 Pennsylvania School Laws (yes, that's a very old book). The staff are incredibly helpful and know their inventory well - don't be afraid to ask for help finding something if you've spent 20 minutes lost in treasure hunting mode. I cannot stress enough how great The Book House is - it is the quintessential used bookshop where you'll find yourself fully immersed in the browsing experience. Check it out whenever you get a chance!
