2 B Groomed Barbering Studio - Permanently closed. - Barbers Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Before you read this I must inform you that I am taller than average African American man who's appearance is that of a frugal man. This establishment is owned by a white man but a Black person cuts the hair. I scheduled an appointment through Booksy at this location but was turned away. Upon arrival I was asked "What did you want" and was not allowed inside of the shop. Instead the barber came to the front of the building and told me to step down so we could speak on the steps of the establishment. I informed Jamal the operator (barber) that I was his 2:30 pm appointment. Jamal paused, and it was clear that he was trying to get rid of me. Next Jamal acted unprofessionally and stated he could not cut my hair because he was "going through some shit" and told me that he would pay to go get my hair cut across the street. I am deeply disappointed by this behavior. This level of customer service has reinvented the term "unpleasant". Do not waste your time scheduling appointment to this establishment if you are a Black person. He prefers to keep his clientele within a specific "demographic." read more

This was hands down the best haircut of my life. I wish I would have gone here first. After getting my haircut butchered the first time at Sergio in downtown philly, I walk in here just as he was closing, praying he could make it look less terrible before my meeting tomorrow. (For reference, I told the lady I kept my beard and she put a giant gap between my sideburns and my beard). Rather than just leaving, he reopens, and proceeds not only to fix everything, but also give me possibly the best beard trim/haircut I've ever had. After I thanked him multiple times, he wouldn't even take any money. If I could give this place 20 stars I would, but yelp limits me to five. Safe to say I won't be going anywhere else. read more

I sent my husband here for his birthday and he came back mutilated. I was angry that he paid for his shave. His face was literally bleeding in 7 places and more razorburn than I've ever seen. The owner gave his service as well. It was absolutely unacceptable and they should have been profusely apologetic. read more

I called, they had a spot open, I ran through the rain and humidity, I arrived wet and sweaty. But the nice gentleman took me despite my condition. Very friendly folks in the quaint 2 chair shop. The barber worked fast yet we actually chatted and it wasn't the dreaded "barber chat" that you just avoid. My barber never seemed rushed (even though I showed up late and he had a follow on appointment). When it was all done, I paid $31 for one of the best haircuts I've had in years and wondered to myself why I've been going to Chopshop all this time. Sure, I get a decent haircut there but I always get attitude from the front person and my haircut varies every trip. It was nice to get a quality cut with hot foam shave at the end. Can't wait to go back, on time, not after running, so I can melt in the chair and enjoy a great haircut. read more

2 B Groomed is the barbershop of the future, despite its throwback charm, ambient jazz soundtrack, and its "fresh from the pages of GQ" aesthetic. Its a grown up, sophisticated answer to the many shops that still cling to the relative comforts of bootleg movies on the TV, cigarette-smoking barbers and a "fresh from a fire sale" sense of decor. Not that there's anything particularly bad about that--some of those places give a mean cut and for less money. But sometimes its nice to get away, treat yourself and let Jamal give you a cut that's as fresh as the shop its made in. Definitely call ahead to make an appointment; I've walked in twice but its usually pretty well-booked. And, honestly, I'm just a very lucky person. read more

Jahmal, you are the man. Considering that you remembered me from the Yelp event back in March, despite the fact that my hair is four months longer, I think that was pretty cool of you. Then, you took my curly mop and home-groomed beard and turned me into a handsome son of a gun. This shop is pretty nice. Tiny but friendly. It wasn't a cheap cut, but then, if it was, it would not be as nice. 5 stars! read more

Went in with high hopes, left feeling like I just paid Sweeney Todd... Let's start with the positives: Ambiance 10/10. This is what you want in a barber shop. Truefitt and Hill products, Men-U, American Crew, just to name a few. Jazz music playing, great set-up. Jamal himself: Guy was incredibly nice. We spoke about the passion behind shaving, the products that work and that don't, I could not wait! Then this butcher put his razor to my face... First thing that a kid with a plastic razor should know is that you don't shave skin that has no cream on it. My face almost 2 hours later is ON FIRE. I have a half-dozen pictures to back this up. Ten years in this business and this isn't common sense??? The cuts, yes there were multiple. One, the deepest, I'll take blame for. As he pulled the razor from my face I moved slightly and now have a one-inch gash which will turn into a scar. The other 5-6 noticeable cuts, not weepers, cuts were your doing Jamal. Thanks buddy. Hair left? Of course, you'd think though in the hour it took he'd have taken it all off? Nope. On neck and under nose I just cleaned up. Shaving over a fiercely irritated area simply to go out to dinner tonight. Again, thanks Jamal. So, if that wasn't everything, driving home, my face smells like blood. Not a little but when you turn your head to check the side-mirrors and you get a whiff of blood, I'd say Sweeney did what Sweeney does. So with dinner in under 2 hours perhaps ice packs and aloe vera will help? Thanks again Jamal. I tipped you $5 on top of the $35 for the slaughter because it was the only brave face I could put on before I reacted the way one should have. Sometimes leaving without saying anything is 10x harder. I wouldn't recommend this place to someone I was trying to destroy. Jamal as a human being you're ok in my book. As a barber, you suck. Today I celebrated my 7th year of sobriety, thanks for making it memorable pal. read more

In NY, where I'm accustomed to getting my hair done it's a law to wash hair before you cut it.... for hygiene reasons. Apparently you barbaric Pennsylvanians don't believe in cleanliness. Either way, I gave the local way a shot. Jamal, my barber, convinced me to get a wash at the end. I left wish dripping wet hair. Uncomfortable overall, not worth it. Jamal described himself as an artist. It was clear he was good at his craft, but all I wanted was a decent low maintenance haircut. He made the swirl from the middle of my head go all the way around to the front. Plus I felt he took too much liberty with lengths of certain areas. I think I'd go back, and although I appreciate the small barber shop feel for $35 a month I'm not becoming a regular. read more

Excellent. I don't just give out 5 stars without being really pleased. I had waited a while to get a haircut so that who I went to would have something to work with. Both my hair and my beard were out of control. In steps Diego. With care and determination, an hour later I left looking good and feeling great. The feeling great comes from the hot towels and facial treatment I got during my shave. The feeling good comes from having a skilled barber take the time to make my "not so stylish" hair look presentable. The place is expensive, if you book a package cut/shave you will still pay around $60 with tip, but the quality is good, and even cheaper cuts at other places you end up paying $40+, so definitely worth it. I'm glad to say I've found a good barber. He and the owner are both very friendly and welcoming, and they take the time to talk and listen rather than just do what they want to you. read more

Terrific barber shop! Consistently very good cuts and straight razor shaves (if you just get your hair cut they also use a straight razor on your neck). I always leave feeling good and happy with the service. I've been to the shop now about four times and really like it. It is a small shop (two chairs) and I definitely recommend making an appointment. Jamal (owner) is very friendly and I've only seen Diego for my services. Diego is the man! He's very detail oriented and friendly. It is on the high end cost wise but for the level of service and care, it is very reasonable. read more

I've been getting cuts from Jahmal for about 4 months, so I figured it was time to write a review. First, the man himself. He has a very calm and inviting personality, and those hands move around with such effortless precision that I always feel comfortable under them. He has done standard cuts for me, as well as some for which I have said "let's make something interesting happen." All of them have turned out well. For anyone with Asian hair, I can safely vouch for Jahmal's abilities to work with straight, thin to medium hair. He has a great eye for what will work with certain hair types, as well as the prescience to know what it will look like later. His shop is warm and inviting, and you gotta love that Jahmal and the other barbers know when you just want to lay back and relax without conversation. read more

2 Be Groomed is a cool, friendly spot to get a great haircut or even better, a full on professional shave. And the shave is what will keep you coming back with all the bells and whistles. The straight razor shave includes, hot towels, oil, hot shave cream with a cold towel and some balm to finish off. You even get a quick face massage before you get out of the chair. As we all have different shaped faces, the shave can leave you with a nick or two, and these healed quickly for me, but the pampering, salon treatment is worth it. Probably not in everyone's weekly budget but for a treat, 2 Be Groomed is the place to go. Jamal will make you feel welcome read more

So I used the online booking to make an appointment for the morning of my wedding to get a straight razor shave from Jahmal at 9am sharp, knowing that I didnt have to start getting ready til 11am at the hotel and I live right in Old City. I received 2 emails confirming my appointment as well as a text msg for 11/28/14 at 9am. One of my groomsmen lived a block away from his shop and assured me he would do a good job. The morning of I find a great place to park on 11th street at 8:55am right across from the barber shop and I eagerly await for my appointment time in my car as nobody was visible inside the shop.... 9:05am, 9:08am comes around and still nobody has opened up the shop while I wait on the sidewalk outside the front door. I tried knocking on the door, checked my email confirmation once, twice, three times to be sure I hadn't made an error booking my shave. To no avail, the sign outside read "Open 7 Days a Week" with the hours clearly marked everyday open at 9am. I called the shop while standing outside on the curb right in front only to receive the voicemail, so I left a message stating I was there on time and in front of the shop awaiting (now its 9:10am) and still no answer or sight of anyone. Needless to say, to this day, I have not received a call back, apology, or any other reason why I wasn't able to get the straight razor shave I booked almost a week prior. I will never patronize this business and I'm shocked that someone with absolutely no integrity runs a serice oriented business in Philadelphia. read more

Jahmal is a details guy. I said I didn't mind if the haircut wasn't exactly what I wanted. He said he didn't roll that way. Gave me a perfect haircut down to every mm of my hairline. Only regret the fact I couldn't get a shave also. Highly recommend. Cash only. Decor is like an old British barber. Wrought iron chairs. Warm wooden decor. Coffee table books on Fallon and the art of being a gentlemen. Would recommend just for the experience. read more

Not worth the $31. Loved the ease of the online booking and the Center City location. But that's where the love ends But the barber seemed really rushed and spent no more than 5 minutes cutting my hair. He didn't offer a neck shave or product. For $31, I expected the cut to be done with much more care and attention. When I went to pay (seeing the credit machine), he said he was cash only today and asked me to go to the atm down the street. Avoid this place and save your money. I'm not happy with my haircut and planning to have it done again next week when it grows out a little. read more

If you love a haircut that looks like someone's 7 year old cousin did it, then this is the place for you! Had my hair mauled here 3 times and I liked the atmosphere so much I kept coming back. Even had a long chat with the owner Jamal about getting a good cut where he claimed to be the cream of the crop... he left so many random lumps of hair uncut I'm half wondering if he needs glasses. Not to mention his clean up job is sloppy (had my girlfriend knocking chunks of hair he left off my ears and head all night). If you want a $10 haircut just go to the ChopShop but take a pass on 2B Groomed unless you want to pay $31 for that same crap job. The shop seemed so cool too but I guess I know why it's always empty. read more

I sometimes get the urge to do completely idiotic things when I'm bored. This was the case when I decided to cut my hair with a beard trimmer... that ran out of juice halfway through. Needless to say it resulted in an interesting style I dubbed "The Bachelor". Thankfully, 2B Groomed was right around the corner and fixed me right up. And while it's the shortest my hair has ever been (they did what they could), it is also the most complimented cut I've ever had, making it very serendipitous. I can tell there is a real passion for the work here and that makes all the difference in a world of generic salons looking for a quick turnover. Time and care was taken to make me feel more confident walking out of there than I did walking in. Moral of the story? Don't cut your own hair... or do. I don't know. Just visit them, ok? read more

There are 2 parts to this story. First was the frustration with the other barber (not Jahmal) who when I called in to make an appointment didnt actually put me down for a cut so I ended up waiting for about an hour to get a cut. Could've been a one-time error but it put a sour taste in my mouth. As for the cut, It was just...good. I have the "Gatsby" haircut and it's definitely not easy finding a great barber who can cut it well. Jahmal was very confident in his abilities and he did spend the time on my hair. He cut my hair a little short on top so it looked a little awkward for about a week or so but it grew out really nicely. Jahmal did a great job with my corners and part but the overall cut (especially for the price tag) was just plain vanilla good. I'm glad I tried 2 b groomed but I won't be a returning customer. read more

I was in Philadelphia for a conference and got a haircut here. Made an appointment, which seemed like something you'd want to plan to do here, with just one chair. I was very happy with the cut. I asked for advice about wearing my very fine, thinning hair a different way and got a great suggestion and a new approach. Generally, I'm uncomfortable talking with a barber; I want the attention to be on my hair, not on conversation, but I enjoyed the conversation here. The experience comes off as just slightly pretentious to me, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Some others have commented on the price; however, the prices are clearly posted and I paid no more here than I do at a downtown barber shop in San Antonio. read more

I have been on the search for the best male grooming studio in the area. By far Jahmal's 2 B Groomed is the best. It has the retro/ classic barbershop feel including your barber takes the time to know you. Jahmal and his staff are very knowledgeable and skilled. My one suggestion is to book a haircut and shave with Diego. You will not regret it. His attention to the details are amazing. read more

I was in Philly for business and had an appt. for a haircut with another barbershop. Lucky for me the barber was sick and couldn't see me. I was able to get an appt. with Diego at 2B Groomed. Great cut! Great shave! Diego enjoys what he does and does it well! Reasonable prices. read more

It had been a good months since my last haircut. I desperately needed one and decided to try 2B Groomed out for a try. I was greeted at the door by Jahmal, a very cordial genuinely nice guy. The first thing I noticed was the decor in the place. Old barber stools and a small sign on the wall requesting that cell phones be turned off. GQ, Playboy and Philadelphia Style were stuffed into the magazine rack beside the two waiting chairs along the wall. I liked what I saw. I hopped in the chair and Jahmal asked me what I wanted with this "mess" atop my head. I gave him some ideas, and he made it happen. We made some small talk and I truly enjoyed the 30 minutes I spent in the chair while listening to WRTI classical music. He finished the job with a nice straight blade shave/ cleanup around my sideburns and the nape of my neck. I put my glasses back on and looked at the mirror a satisfied customer. A sharp attention to detail left me feeling like a million bucks. The $31 dollars was completely worth it for a quality hair cut in Center City by a true gentleman. Plus, the classic decor leaves you feeling a bit like James Bond perhaps.... read more

I went to Jahmal for years while living in Center City and always got great cuts and great conversation. Moved out of the city and started going to other, cheaper shops all over the place. Sure enough, each of those cuts were uneven and my wife kept saying "Why don't you just go back to Jahmal?" So, I went back and a few cuts later I don't know why I ever left. A men's haircut is just not complete without a hot razor shave on your neck and sideburns. Jahmal and his fellow barbers at 2BGroomed seem to be the only people in town who get that. You don't have to ask for it, it's just how they end your cut. Is 2BGroomed pricier than many other shops? Sure. But the old adage "You get what you pay for" is true and with something like your hair, it's worth a few extra bucks. read more

Jamal, you let me down. Big time. I booked a Classic Scissors Cut and a Master's Shave for my boyfriend to experience the day of his 40th. Now, that's an $88 experience, plus I left my baby a 20% tip to give you when he was done. But, when he walked out your door, he was left with a cut above his lip, hairs on his mustache line, and an uneven haircut. Do you know who ended up fixing your mistakes for free?! The freaking nail salon next to the Whole Foods on South Street. Yes, you read that right. I wanted my sweetie to feel like a million bucks by the time I got home from work and whisked him away for dinner at La Croix to top of his day. After his appointment with you, I had arranged for him to get a mani/pedi before his 80 minute massage at our favorite spa. While he was soaking his feet, the woman looked up at him and said loudly, "What wrong with your face?" Yes Jamal. That's what my boyfriend, who's never been in a nail salon in his life, heard. How embarrassing is that?! The nail technician called all the other workers in the salon over to stare at my boyfriend and look at YOUR mistakes. The only man who worked there, evened out my boyfriend's haircut and shaved off the stragglers that you left, and he didn't even charge him because he felt so bad for my boyfriend. Now, I will say, that my man loved the idea of a straight razor shave, he loved that you played classical music, and the idea of the experience really made him feel significant and, well, manly. But, you blew it. Here is a guy that typically gets a $10 cut at the Chop Shop and, had you made this a better experience, would have been willing to come back and patronize your business each month. Let me tell you one more reason you let me down Jamal. When I came in to book the appointment, and explained it was my boyfriend's 40th and his first straight-razor shave, you not only assured me you'd take care of him, but you also told me you'd hook him up with a small bag with some sample sized products he could take with him. He's still waiting for that bag. That's just some poor business manners man. read more

Tried to get my haircut there today - I didnt have an appointment, but you can normally see the owner sitting in the window looking real bored so I didnt think it was going to be an issue. I was walking up, and noticed he was finishing up with someone - again, not thinking it was an issue, I go to walk in and he cracks the door open, and says "what?" - a little taken back I asked if he had any availability this afternoon - without evening thinking, he said no and slammed the door. (ok not really a slam but certainly aggressive!) Needless to say, I will not be going back and I hope the owner figures out why he's so miserable. read more

Well, it looks like Philadelphians' priorities are still right up there with Playboy's - minus the class, though. Jamal quietly asked me to step outside of his shop because despite my needing a cut, and feeling relieved to find they were opened late, he was offended to hear my surprise at his announcement of the shocking sticker price - $27. Most people willing to charge twice the going rate are able to sell customers on the quality of what they're providing. But this was apparently no job for Jamal; his ego wasn't going for THAT! Good luck and as the other reviewer said, my apologies to the Philadelphians who don't realize you can get at least as good a job for half that amount in a place with just as much character (and nostalgic window dressing!) in nearly any other city in the U.S. But if you're just about image you belong in Beverly Hills though, or Buckingham Palace. Not in a tiny, crammed corner of 40 square feet of ramshackle space at 11th and Spruce. read more

Great haircut. Majid was a master with the scissors, precise and quick. Nice small place great service, great price, definitely recommend!

Jamal gives a mean cut. Spends about an hour doing things right -- even though a typical cut for me elsewhere lasts 20 minutes or so. Beautiful place, and my only complaint is that prices are a bit up there - $30 for a simple cut... read more

My husband recently got a shave here. Armed with his first beard ever and pictures of what he wanted this beard to look like, he asked for guidance on how to make his beard look like the photos -- natural but groomed, like nikolaj coster-waldau in headhunter. Instead he got Joey fatone on dancing with the stars. Perhaps the worst part was that henna was applied to my husband's face without a warning that it is semi permanent coloring...our your face. Now, he and I do not like the shape of the beard but he is afraid to take it off for fear of have a semi- permanent shadow. According to my husband, the owner was very nice, super nice, a guy he would want to hang out with, which is why there are two stars here. Lots of effort and care went into the shave, but I doubt my husband will go back. His face is all red and blotchy, there are nicks, there are stray hairs that will have to be removed, and the beard looks nothing like the photos he showed...nothing at all. In all, a great experience but bad result. read more

I've been to a few places to get my haircut since moving to Philly and this is bby far the best place. Moving to a big city, I should have realized it's worth it to pay about $25 for a good haircut, even if my hair is simple. I went for the $10 bargain place a few times before they used clippers on top of my head...something I hate. Unless you ask for that, a barber should never do that. I went to 2B Groomed to get it fixed and BJ did a great job. She was actually able to cut my hair short enough to be the length I wanted without making me look like I was a marine going to Afghanistan tomorrow (I bet even there they don't use clippers on the top of your head!). Haircuts are one of those things, like a good pair of shoes or a good chef knife (I'm a cook) that you just have to pay good money for. It's worth it and I would reccomend it to anyone. read more

I went here for some male pampering the afternoon before I got married. I had a shave, haircut, massage, mask, everything a guy needs before leaving bachelorhood forever. The service was excellent, very capable and left me looking as if I belonged at least in the same room as my beautiful bride, which was a feat itself. Jamal runs a tight ship, very relaxing and I enjoyed feeling like I was in an old school barbershop. Oh, and as I left he handed me a small gift bag including a cigar to celebrate my important day. This is a first class place, I recommend it to all... read more

A+ haircut and experience. Would recommend this place for all. Jahmal is the man the place has a great old time feel. If your looking to look good this is your place read more

I asked Jahmal for a trim. I asked him to leave length on top and just clean up the sides. I got waaaay more than I bargained for. It's uneven on top and in the front; longer on the sides and back...amateur. I'm usually pretty specific in what I ask for in order to avoid feeling terrible afterwords but it didn't help here. Also, Jahmal came off as unfriendly and cocky - which would be fine if I got a decent cut. I should have known better when the two main places nearby - Groom and King of Shaves - are booked solid after 4PM all week and this place is completely open. Won't be coming back. read more

A hidden treasure indeed. Not only did they give me one of the best haircuts I've ever had, but they did it with a friendly smile. These guys are incredible and worth every penny. read more

I love this place for a nice hot shave. I've been coming here for a few years now when I go more then a week without shaving and I need it professional done because doing it at home just won't do. I love the look of this place, it's got such an old school vibe. When people ask me where I go I say I have a Barber because that is exactly what they provide here, a classic men's barber shop. The look is perfect with the black barber chairs and the jazz/classical music playing, the dark wood cabinets to even the lighting fixtures. The service is always top notch and professional. The amount of meticulous care that is put into the whole experience is wonderful. I've always left feeling refreshed and my face is as smooth as can be with rarely a stray hair remaining. I've gotten shaves at other place around Philly and other cities and I can easily say that this place is the best. The kicker is that I also subscribe to playboy and when I saw 2B Groomed listed as one of the top 10 places in the country to get a shave I felt a sense of pride, I thought damn right, that's my barber. I used to get my hair cut there years ago but now I have a friend do it (gotta help a friend out) so I can't really comment on that. Though I still have plenty of friends/neighbors who get their haircuts at 2B Groomed and I've never heard them complain. read more

Jamal is a master of his craft. He's also an awesome guy. I highly recommend this place to any guys looking for an great haircut and shave.

After moving to Philly in 2011, it took me about 7-8 haircuts to find the right barbershop. I came across 2BGroomed off a recommendation from a friend and I haven't gone anywhere else since. Love the chill atmosphere, old school vibe and fresh cut I always leave with after Jahmal hooks it up! read more
