Ty is amazing! I got one of the best cuts in years here. The atmosphere was inviting. The free drinks were an added bonus. I had an appointment and was seen right away. They take walk ins to my knowledge. The location is inside a large commercial building and you must get buzzed in, and head down a flight of stairs. Once inside the space its a breathe of fresh air. Music was perfect for what you would expect in a 1950's barber shop. I will be back again and ask for Ty as she was spectacular. FYI- my mens haircut was $28! Thats a steal. read more

Groom barbershop is the best! And so is BJ! She is so good at what she does and is just a really nice person. I've been a customer for probably close to five years now and have no plans of going anywhere else. They are also taking all the necessary precautions with limiting the number of people, wearing masks, and everything else. I always feel very safe there. FYI - They are in the basement of the Arts Condominium. When you walk in, you dial them on the keypad and they'll buzz you in. Go to Denim on South St. or the Blind Barber if you want something on Juniper, if you're near the square try the barbers in the racket club at least once. Philadelphia has many, many barber shops, all in the same price range and NONE are in a BASEMENT. The place is not clean. This happened 9 months ago. I was going to be late for 5 mins b/c I was at an atm nearby and needed some cash (they don't accept credit card there). I called them that I was going to be late for 5 mins max and they said they can't wait. That was very rude. Wish they were a bit flexible and capable of accommodating customers' needs to an extent. Since then I've been going to King of Shave and Barbers and Gents. Better customer service and friendlier attitude at those two places for sure. My boyfriend needed a barber So we walked in to Groom. They were friendly and accommodating and squeezed him in. They gave him a great haircut, beard trim and cleanup for $25. Shop is buzzing and has a cool retro vibe with good magazines while waiting or for when your plus one is waiting for you. Overall great experience Will come back. read more

I went here for years. Unfortunately, I recently learned this Barbershop is antimask and many of the barbers refuse to mask. This puts their disabled patrons and their vulnerable family members at risk. When i asked joe to put on a mask he told me to sit down and shut up. I went to groom today. Im new in town and I went due to the reviews and also the proximity to where I was. Cool place, nice setup. I made a last minute appointment. They were able to accommodate me and set up an appointment withen the next 30 mins or so. My barber was BJ (I believe that was her name). I don't get a complex cut. I didn't need to get the top cut, just cut the sides and blend it in with the top, thin it out if need be. I will say that while I was there, the cut seemed fine. She combed and styled it after done. However when I came home and washed my hair, it was very uneven. The side burns were not blended in with the sides at all or with the top. Parts of the back seemed lumpy in areas. And when I style it and comb over, many of the hair are different lengths. read more

When he left last year, I was sad, but he recommended one of the new barbers, Michael. Michael (and the whole staff, really) is friendly, welcoming, and great to chat with during my hair cut. I've just left one of the best hair cut experiences of my life and easily the best barber experience. Groom has been around for 10 years and I hope it's around much longer. Joe cut my hair and from the moment I walked in I felt comfortable, inspired, and welcome. The decor is logical for an old-school barbershop but doesn't feel like it's 'trying' to be old-school. The music is perfect, playing classics like Sinatra, Ella, and other greats. The lighting is not too bright and really accents the place perfectly. I was an early morning appointment and Joe welcomed me as I walked in and asked if I was Ryan. That let me know that he made an effort to review his clients for the day and wanted to remember names and faces. The conversation throughout was perfect. Neither trying nor distant, just a warm familiar barbershop conversation that let me speak while enjoying the cut. Joe was very thorough on my hair. He took the time to shorten it (I had very long hair going into the cut) and not just hack away. I brought in an image of what I wanted and he took time to thoughtfully study it and didn't make me feel like I was odd for doing so. He talked through the cut in between conversation and let me know what he was doing. He was even encouraging saying that I had made a good choice of hair style and commenting on the trendiness of the cut right now. He was also careful to not let hair clippings get on my work clothes, knowing I was off to work after the cut. He regularly cleaned the clippings off and kept them off my face entirely. As Joe put product in my hair or dried it off, he took time to massage my scalp which is something small but makes all the difference between a good haircut and a good barber experience. When finished cutting, Joe walked me through how to style my hair and make product suggestions without trying to sell me any product which was great. This is a cash only establishment and that is sometimes a deal-breaker for me - Groom has such a classic personal feel to it that the cash only part just seems right - it allowed me hand Joe the money, shake his hand, and walk out without swiping cards and printing noisy receipts which would have interrupted the experience for other clients. I really can't recommend Groom enough. They are very busy and work by appointment but it doesn't feel that way when you're there. There was one walk-in while I was in the chair and Joe reassured him that they'd get him in since they weren't busy. I wouldn't expect that to always be the case if there were other appointments waiting. So go give Groom a try! I don't think you'll regret it. read more

I've been going to Groom for nearly two years and wanted to take a moment to leave some praise here. I always see Anthony and I keep going back to him for a couple of reasons. 1. He does a really good job cutting my hair. 2. He's a good dude who you can tell loves his job and what he does. It means each visit is pleasant and I leave very happy with the job he does. It's the 2nd time in my life where I feel like I have a barber I trust, and love that every few weeks I have a standing appointment with him. One less thing to worry about. Coming here for a few years now.. The quality of attention your hair gets drops after the first few years. Day 1 they try hard to make sure your cut is perfect. A few years later they don't even take the time to brush your hair nicely after the cut is done.. Feel so rushed at times. Sad but I may have to find another place... So against my better judgment tried to set a new appointment in the hopes management sees my review and tries to find out what I found upsetting. Who wants to find a new barber shop? It's like finding a new best friend. So the manager calls me and tells me "They need to cancel my appointment and I need to move on" they don't feel my review was fair? Wow! So check out Joe's FABULOUS response to my review. I actually predicted this kind of a response was coming, because if you look at his other responses to people's negative reviews they are consistently arrogant and he is completely unable to admit any kind of fault. The tone of Joe's response is as follows: "We crammed you into a busy day without an appointment, and you were not charged for your beard trim. Therefore you have no right to complain if I did a terrible job." No one told me I was not charged for my beard shaping. I asked for a beard shaping and a hair buzz, so I should have been charged for it. If I had known the arrangement was that I was not being charged but the job would be half-assed, I would have rather paid. Additionally Joe offers me a refund, something I didn't ask for, with the sincerity of a paddle across the face. He has no interest in actually compensating a dissatisfied customer. His only interest is in being a martyr, and in denigrating me because I had bad things to say. He sent me no private message about this offered refund, and the whole 'homeless shelter' nonsense is just comical. This is not a gesture of apology for a job poorly done. It's a passive aggressive way of refusing to take responsibility. Joe, you go ahead and donate that money on my behalf to the food pantry at Mazzoni Center. You shoot me a message and let me know that you did, and I'll go ahead and follow up and let everyone know that it was successfully received. In the meantime I'm going to go ahead and pass your vague offer for an unspecified discount for your services far and wide across the internet. Let me start off by saying I was specifically instructed by my boyfriend to write this review on his behalf. Not being a yelper himself, this is a pretty big deal. After one too many an occasion of shock and appall at the hacking job my boyfriends normal hairstylist does he agreed to let me do a little yelp searching for a better place to get his hair did. Groom appealed to me as it seemed the reviews indicated a higher level of skill and a personal relationship with the two barbers Joe and Sal. However, after entering the building and being instructed by the security guard that there was no other hair place but the frou frou salon on the first floor I was a little wary. Luckily I went back to the aforementioned man, interrupted his late lunch, and pushed again..."are you SURE there isn't a place called Groom in here?" response: "Oh yeah, it's in the basement". Nice. The place definitely lacks in ambiance and the whole basement thing put us off for a moment but that was one moment longer than I should have ever thought twice about this place. Joe was booked so I made an appointment (same day) with Sal. When he started at my man with an electric razor I almost cried but gave in to the fact that I know NOTHING about hair and at the very least it can't be any worse than the hair assault he had been used to - so I stayed quiet and out of the way. Post hair details: Absolutely perfect. He did a straight razor on the back of J's neck which of course then prompted the "feel it, like a baby's bottom" comment. He was extremely happy with the entire experience and even happier with the accompanying price! For a gorgeous haircut he was charged $17 dollars! This place is awesome. read more

By far the best place for a man to get a hair cut in the city. I used to go to Groom when it was in the Philadelphia building - then started dating a girl who ran a salon in the city so I went there for my haircuts. Now I'm single and back at Groom! I started going to Sal and his attention to detail and skill level are insane. This is a classic barber shop - jazz playing, super laid back, no cheesy hair style posters on the walls - and best of all they use a straight razor and hot lather to do the back of your neck and around the ears. I have found my new go-to place. I'm almost nervous to rave about this place for fear that I'll never be able to get an appointment. I made sure to schedule my next one at the end of my first. Simply put, they run an awesome shop and give quality haircuts. It's a little difficult to find the shop at first (it's in the basement of 1324 Locust, and you have to be buzzed in) but the atmosphere is awesome. Frank is my barber but Joe and BJ were there when I went. They were all super nice and easygoing people. Joe and Frank seemed to get along very well so I don't understand where an earlier reviewer got the sense that Joe was a jerk. Absolutely an all-around great experience. read more

My Mom has owned a salon in the 'burbs for the past 30 years, and since birth, I had never been to another place. However, I had grown tired of driving up to her salon for a quick trim, and wanted to find a local spot. I found out about Groom through a trusted referral about a year ago and am very happy I made the switch. I discovered immediate comfort - a classic styled barber shop with just enough modern touch. Great jazz, a damn comfortable couch in the waiting area, and the best selection of magazines I've seen. Joe is warm and friendly, and an absolute master with the clippers and scissors. He immediately knew my hair type and his technique makes it perfect. Whether I want a really short cut or a quick clean up and thin out, he's accommodating, and does a hell of a job. (And he never forgets to do the top of your ears and your eyebrows.) The warm neck shave and scalp massage are two great touches, as well. You will not be disappointed - be sure to call a week in advance. While they do have the occasional last minute opening, their books are full for a reason! read more

I have been meaning to try Groom for years on the recommendation of my partner and just got the opportunity last week. I had an great experience, Setting up an appointment and getting to the shop is probably the most complicated part of the deal: the phone line frequently rings busy. If you have never had a cut there before, they ask you who you'd like to see and the length of your hair. The length thing kind of puzzled me, but I took a guess (short?) and they assigned me to Vincent. Parking is the usual in Center City Philly. The shop itself is in a building that does not look like it necessarily houses other businesses. You have to get buzzed in and make your way down to the basement. Although there is a wheelchair elevator, it doesn't look like it has been used in years, making me wonder if accessibility might not be an issue for folks who can't make the stairs. It's cash only, so make sure you hit up the ATM before you arrive. The downstairs is a little small but not uncomfortable. I arrived early and was seen promptly. I was the worst kind of client--I didn't really know what cut I wanted and I wasn't very good at describing how I typically styled it. Vincent handled my impossibility with ease: he helped me pick something from a style book and got right down to business. He was quick but not rushed and clearly took pride in his work. I have never paid so little ($24) for such a great haircut. Even if you think I am a doofus with no taste, I can add that family and colleagues alike have given endless compliments to the cut this week without any prompting from me--a real testament to its awesomeness. Like Edward scissor hands of beards, BJ gave a concerto performance of men's grooming. First was the scissors, leaving behind a beautifully trimmed beard, then came the electric shears to take it down notch. Stopping there would have been worth the $15 cost, but like a symphony she moved into the next set of trimming the eye lashes, then straight shaving the edges. Finally she closed the show with a nice cocoa-butter face-rubdown to prevent the nasty outside weather from ruining the experience. read more

I have never in my life had a barber who I always go back to time after time. But since I sat down in BJ's chair and let her do her thing, I won't go anywhere else in Philly. She takes her time, listens to what I want, and is deft with the scissors and the buzzer. Plus, you get a hot lather and straight razor clean up for your neck, and a nice little neck and shoulder massage to finish the cut. The music is cool, the magazines to read while waiting are all up to date and interesting, and the place just has a great vibe. The only downside is that you usually have to book way in advance as there are only 3 barbers and they are very busy. But the small hassle is well worth the great haircut you get. read more

I've been going to Groom for almost a year and it has taken me too long to write them a review. First, the atmosphere is really unique and the decor makes it such that just waiting for your appointment is a cool experience. You've definitely got to book an appointment a week or two advance because some of the barbers get booked up quickly. Usually, the appointments are for half-hour blocks. Its really easy to do as long as you give them several availabilities. The haircut itself is awesome. As an Asian male, there's always that fear that your barber might not be able to cut straight hair. However, the barbers at Groom are really skilled and always talk to you throughout the process. I've gotten my hair cut by Woody and Vince, but my guy is Frank M. He gives really CLEAN fades and hard parts, taking his time to make sure every detail of my hair is on point. It's been awesome getting to know him better with every appointment and it speaks to how friendly and down-to-earth the staff is at Groom. Whats also cool is that they always ask each other for opinions on a haircut if they need a second opinion. It always ensures that you get the best cut possible. I've asked for a variety of cuts from simple to more extreme, and it always looks good. Plus the razor shave on the back of your neck feels awesome too! The cut is $24 and I used to get cuts in Chinatown which might be cheaper, but the quality at Groom is above and beyond. As long as I'm in Philly, this is the place for me. read more

I've been going to Joe at Groom for a little less than two years and am always happy with the results. The atmosphere is very relaxed and the jazz playing throughout is fantastic. Joe has great attention to detail and makes sure I'm satisfied with the cut before sending me on my way. The warm shaving cream and straight-razor treatment around the edges are an added bonus. As for the experience, Joe is very easy to talk to and seems to have a story for any subject. He happens to share my love for quality cheeseburgers as well, and we often share opinions on what's good and what's not so good around Philly. Overall, I'm really glad to have found a place to get a great haircut in a comfortable atmosphere and not have to break the bank. This review is all about the young stud they have working there named Dave. I kept it simple... fade with a #2 and trim up top. Dave took his time and was rather meticulous... sculpting my crown. Generally speaking, I don't like you, and I'd prefer you don't speak to me... just cut my shit and leave me go, but Dave's alright... a real dude... nothing pretentious... just a genuine neighborhood guy putting in work. Another thing to note... I've got a pretty dense cauliflower ear on my right. Most either act like they're afraid to touch and/or damage it, or just plain have no idea how to work/trim around it. He went right in on it... perfectly... not too light, nor too aggressive. Just great service... PERIOD. Ok, one more thing to note... I come from a bit of adversity as a young-un... like a couple attempts to carve me up with a butcher knife kind of junk so there is no way in hell I'd ever do the straight razor thing... umm... well, NEVER say never. So, this review has been long overdue. First off, I am very nervous about haircuts. I've had past barbers who would do well on one haircut, then the next one would be a complete monstrosity. So, at baseline, I have pretty high standards of what I consider to be good. My first visit here was sometime in 2011 or 2012; I forget. I had just moved to philly from the OC in california and was in search of a solid barber. I jumped from place to place until I found Groom. Let's just say from that moment to when I moved away this year, I was hooked. I actually looked forward to getting my haircut here because of the sheer quality of the cut...every...single...time. I got complimented on my cut at least once a week by a random person and they would ask where I got my cut from. BJ has cut my hair from the beginning to the end, so unfortunately I can't speak too much about the other barbers. However, from observation, I can tell their skills were pretty darn good as well. So, I really believe you can't go wrong with anyone here. Since BJ cut my hair though, let me talk about her. BJ is just ridiculously good. Her ability to texture, shape, mold, cut whatever you call it is unheard of. Every cut I got from her only got better and better. It got to a point where she knew my head and my hair so well that I think she had a stronger relationship with my hair than with me! Not only that, she is an amazing person. I would always banter to her about my previous landlords and problems with my current housing situation and she would always empathetically listen and help me solve them. BJ is definitely one person I miss in Philly since having to move. Even moving to San Francisco and my few stops back home in the OC, I have yet to find a barber as good as BJ. Needless to say, I'm trying to find another new barber and I hate my life now. Now, you must be wondering why I waited 3 years to post a review. Well, let's just say I'm not the only one who knows how good this place is. So for the sake of easing my appointment schedule, I tried to keep it a secret (to no avail though)! If you choose to be a regular here, I would suggest scheduling your next haircut after your current for ease of scheduling. Even if your schedule is kinda wacky (like mine was), BJ was always willing to work around me and help me get in (even if that meant canceling my appointment literally 3x in the span of 1 week, sorry again!). First time goer the other day and was looking for a place in Center City that was affordable, clean, and comfortable. Also - with little to no experience with other places in the city - I was a little apprehensive about the whole barber experience. Who knew that the place I was looking for would be right around the corner through some unassuming swing doors in the basement of the Arts Condo building. Jazz music while you're waiting/getting your hair cut, nice "classic" feel to the place without going over the top, and decent hours. Called up and got a 9AM appt the next day. Woody cut my hair and it has received approval from the lady. He also explained what he was doing and why he was doing it - which for a guy that doesn't know his own hair, hair products or anything of that nature - that was pretty helpful. Also, it's always nice when there's no forced conversation just for the sake of no silence. Good cut, took care of the neck as well without a prompt, and the price is pretty damn good for Center City ($24/$30 with tip). Easy experience all-around and I will definitely be back. read more

Since moving to Old City a few years ago it was very difficult to find a solid place to get a haircut. With the overpriced "male salons" and super cuts around, I spent a lot of time (and bad cuts) looking for THE place....and Groom is THE place. Tucked into the lower level, the moment you walk in your with the sounds of 1940's jazz, and if you are a few minutes early you can grab a seat and read up on the local news in Philly mag, or up your style with GQ. The decor is exactly what you expect from a place that you can see Frank Sinatra getting a cut and shave at. I have been going to BJ for the last year and a half and she is terrific.
