My hair was extremely uneven on one side, I had to use clippers at home to fix it. Nothing like cutting your own hair after paying someone to do it. Also they didn't have the tools to do a skin fade, which for a barber shop seems absurd. The place was nice and there was no wait time, but that's is a little more telling after my experience today. read more

Y. the barber does a good (and fast) and thorough job at a very fair price. Make sure to say what you want, and you will be fine! The Opera Barbershop is a great asset to the Rittenhouse neighborhood. - mcget /trophybikes read more

I'm new to the area and was referred by a long time customer. Was able to walk in and get a haircut on the spot. Got the cut I asked for. Pricing was awesome. Getting compliments on my new cut. read more

La LA LA LA LA!! Opera buffs with beards and bouffants, unite! Your barbered beautification beckons! Enjoy fresh flowers, opera playing on the big screen on the wall, and a delightful barber! LOOK FOR THE BARBER POLE ON 20TH STREET Steps from Rittenhouse square, as you're walking 20th Street, look for the barber pole to take you to this delightful windowed barber shop. Knock for entry. NO SPORTS, OR SCREAMING DISINFORMATIONAL PEDANTS -- JUST OPERA!! Ahhhh. A barber shop I can enjoy. Classical music (opera)! If this is your bag, baby, then you've found your spot! I did! It's normally my bane of wincing, eye-squinting, lip-pursing disgust to have to sit through a bout of commercial-televisioned babbling talking heads spewing whatever off-topic disinformation is the trend of the day. NOT HERE! Just opera! Test your knowledge and see if you can identify what's playing. Bonus stars if you get it right! SERVICES Beard Trim ($18) - dry/cold with clippers, no straight edge. Men's Cut ($24). Women's Cut ($26) MINE I was really hoping for a straight edge today. It was just clippers. Since I hadn't hot-toweled and lotioned before I went, I've got a nasty bit of razor burn. Boo on me! But I was so pleased with the ambience, I can't wait to go back for a cut. read more

Opera Barber Shop - Opera playing on the wall! Urbane!!! - Barbers Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

I stopped in here on a whim yesterday because I needed to get my head shaved and my beard cleaned up. I was not greeted very warmly, which I didn't really appreciate. I was wearing a kind of fabulous faux fur coat for the punk rock flea market, and I feel like the dudes that were working judged me as soon as I walked in. I was seated and without greeting me or welcoming me the guy who did my hair just said "what number?" As if I know anything about barber's shears or what numbers mean. Once I told him what I wanted he got to work, but I feel like he really rushed to the job. All in all I was in his seat for what felt like maybe five minutes. I had to ask him to go back and actually trim my neck and sharpen the edges of my beard, which he did do. All in all he did just an OK job. I didn't walk away thinking he didn't do well, but he certainly didn't take the time to make me feel welcome or make me feel like he was putting any real effort into what he was doing. I feel like I got a $10 barbershop visit but I had to pay 26+ tip. read more

Opera Barber Shop - Barbers Near Me - Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Fast and sloppy. Do not go! Didn't realize until I left but he gave me bangs which are totally straight (think, Amish child) and I did not ask for. I will need to wear a hat for the next month at least until my hair is long enough to properly fix. Humiliating. read more

My experience was exactly the same as Eric C's below. I came here on a weekday, I think Friday during lunchtime, after passing Barberie on the next block and seeing it packed. Opera Barbershop was empty, so I figured "a haircut is a haircut, at least you don't have to wait." Plus, the $24 cut seems to be the cheapest in the area. I now hear my dad's old advice ringing back at me: "good haircuts are not cheap, cheap haircuts are not good" and man was he right. Syofian rushed me through the shop so quickly and sloppily I couldn't believe it. He cut my sideburns slanted (without asking me if I wanted them taken up), missed multiple spots on my neck, and took soooo much more off than I had asked. This was not an enjoyable haircut experience and I doubt I'll ever be back. The ONE plus going for them is that they take venmo, BUT this comes at the draw that they don't accept any credit cards. Do not waste your time here, head to Barberie down the street. read more

This is the worst barber in Philadelphia. Went here on a Friday morning. The place was empty. But the barber rushed me like he's got a train to catch. Finished the whole haircut in under 10 minutes. Missed several spots. I even asked him if he missed any spots on the back. He said no without looking. read more

Don't go here, you could rather take a scissor or trimmer to your hair and beard yourself and save yourself, not just money, but also the feeling of being mugged and irritated. Barber took less than 5mins to cut and trim. Did not once use comb. Wonder if the barber learnt looking at YouTube videos. Rather pay 10$ more than to come back here again. read more

A place near Rittenhouse Square to get a quick but nice haircut. No credit cards. It used to take Venmo during the height of pandemic but no more. It costs $24 so no complaints to pay cash. Recommended. read more

Top notch haircuts in an old school barbershop atmosphere while hearing opera music in the background!

I've been going to this barber shop for over 15 years. Yanni is fast, efficient, and knows exactly what I like. He's not one of those barbers who asks how you want it cut, and then cuts it as he likes. He listens to what you say and delivers. I moved out to DELCO in 2013 and have tried numerous barbers, but haven't had much luck. I make a special trip into Center City to get the perfect haircut from Yanni! At $22 a cut, you're not going to find a better deal. read more

I've been going here for 10 years or so and even though we're on the other side of the bridge now, I still make the trip. Terri is the best. She always does a good job and is personable. She is very thorough and trims eyebrows, ears and nose too. Walk-ins are welcome, but depending on when you go, there may be a wait. read more

For people complaining that he works too fast, they should go to a salon where they can gab for an hour and a half. I don't have time for that. Yanni gives great haircuts and it doesn't take forever. read more

I recommend this place to anyone who wants an affordable ($22 for a female) and simple cut! Yanni has cut my hair a few times, and I plan to keep going back. Plus, sometimes he brings his [calm and well-behaved] dog, so there's another incentive. This shop has a really casual vibe that took me a couple of visits to figure out (I haven't ever made an appointment). When you walk in, if nobody is available to cut your hair, you sit on one of the chairs against the wall until it's your turn. The staff is friendly but not overly chatty. The first time I went, I didn't realize it is cash only, and Yanni was really nice about the mistake and trusted me to run to the ATM. Yanni generally gives me what I ask for, though last time I had a couple of small strands of hair on the top layer in the middle of my head that were much shorter than any other layers. I did ask for layers, but I'm not sure what he was going for with those strands. I'm not really picky about my haircuts because most mistakes are hidden among my curls, so the pickier you are, the more specific you should be when describing what you want. read more

The guy is really sweet and accommodating. I wanted to get my undercut shaved on my lunch break and he fit me in. The atmosphere is really relaxing and he did an awesome job. I never once felt odd being a chick in a barbershop which I can't say for a lot of places. read more

The best. Going here 10 years. Fast, high quality, efficient. Wait is always short (even if there are people in line). I don't go anywhere else in the city. Can't beat the value ($22/haircut) read more

Don't listen to the bad reviews... they are in the Twilight Zone... I've been going here 15 years... it is Center City and the prices are fair for what you get. Just because a haircut takes 2 to 5 minutes (in that is the case for you) does not mean it's bad! How does a 45 minute hair cut make any difference for most men? It is a barber shop not a beauty parlor. If you want to pay $150 go to a salon and get the "works" -- if you need a styling, a trim, or a clean up this is what you want. Thank you Yanni! read more

This is my go to barber shop in Center City, and has been for 2 years. All of the barbers are great, really kind, and always do their best to get my hair looking exactly how I want it to look. The prices are very reasonable ($18 for a men's cut) and the service is fast and high quality. I love when the dogs are in the store; it makes for a fun time. Even when there are a lot of people waiting, the cut times are fast, and I've never found myself waiting more than 20 minutes. Overall, this is a great place to get your hair cut and I'm so glad to have found it. OF NOTE, it is CASH ONLY, so come prepared. read more

Yani is the man. Quick reasonable great cuts. Glad I walked in. No appointments necessary. read more

This is a terrific place and I have been going here for about 20 years. They are fast, efficient, and do a great job. Also conveniently located and rarely a wait. Strongly recommended! read more

I really like going here and will continue to do so even though I moved a little further away. They are quick, cheap and allow dogs. $18 haircut that will likely take 10 minutes of less. I actually went in yesterday at 10am, sat right down and was out the door in 5 minutes. Can't beat it. Only negative is that they don't take credit cards and that they're not open after 4pm on weekdays but I can and do go on weekends so it's no biggie. read more

Yanni is the man! I've been going here for 20+ years and have no interest in changing. Never too long a wait, Yanni is super friendly and accommodating, and with the price, you can't beat it. Always a fine haircut. Who needs overpriced frills and pampering when you have to go back in a month? Hope the 'rona doesn't keep them closed too much longer -- I'm getting bushy! read more

Friendly place. Nice people. Reasonable fee. $ 18 for hair cut. Very fast and happy to go there read more

I just got back from this place to get a basic wash & trim (I have long hair, down to my chest). I walked in to see 3 chairs, all occupied with people getting cuts. No one said anything to me so I just sat down, feeling a bit awkward. But then one of the clients was done and the stylist just said "next!" and the next person that was waiting before me went to him. It was obvious that there was less structure but people knew who was next, etc. Once it was my turn, Marie asked me what I wanted done exactly and took the time to listen to me. I got a nice wash from her, with her messaging my head. She took her time cutting my hair and it turned out perfect! AND it was only $20!!! This is UNHEARD of in Center City for a woman's hair so I was thrilled. The previous review of the price was the reason I went to check it out in the first place. I recommend it! read more

Worst experience ever! The person who assisted has no minimum basic knowledge, I'm never going back to this place. It took less than 2 minutes for haircut, uneven cut and awful look. read more

Not the best haircut, and certainly not a friendly place. Not sure the barber gave two craps if I was there or not. He took barely 5 minutes for the entire thing, and didn't even use scissors. I probably should have demanded more, but I was just so shocked I paid and left. Definitely wouldn't recommend going here ever; I certainly won't go back. If you want a decent cut, honesty Supercuts does a fine job. I still think Citrus Salon is the best haircut in the city; you can't go wrong with Juju! read more

Pretty much everything I want in a barbershop: fast, friendly, inexpensive, attention to detail, and barbers that are totally okay with me not wanting to smalltalk the whole time I'm getting my hair cut. read more

Old school and comfortable. The older gentleman is friendly and likes to talk. Yanni is a great barber and patient. I have only had Marie once and was satisfied. True to the name, they do play opera music. You have the option of a regular haircut or scissor cut (which is a few more dollars). read more

Literally just got my haircut there. The dude cut it in 5 min. When i looked in the mirror, he had missed a couple spots and was mad that i asked him to correct them. The guy seemed zoned out and mad at life. Do not come here!!! read more

My boyfriend has been going to this place for a year and he loves it. It's a really friendly place, cheap price, convenient north of Rittenhouse location, great cut - he uses Marie. FYI - if you don't like dogs, it may be a problem as they let their dogs run around the shop. The dogs are super friendly and cute, but I know that not everyone likes dogs. read more

Everyone is super friendly, the rates are great. They didn't flinch at all when I had to go to the ATM, insisting that they do the cut first, then let me go get money (cash only). I'm a fan. Also, congratulations to the couple finally getting married in a helicopter after 30+ years! read more

I actually chose Opera because of the positive ratings online. If you prefer an old-time barber shop instead a salon, this is the place for you. Perfect high and tight! My new barber!! read more

Quick and efficient haircut at a very affordable price. Definitely the place to go if you're looking for something easy and dependable.

One of the few reasonable Barber shops in Rittenhouse. I'm been pretty happy with my experiences so far, and plan to keep coming back.

The fastest and best haircut I've gotten in a while- I know the two sound like contradictions in terms but Mr Opera (apologize for not knowing his real name) proves that it is possible . He is technically very adept and also possesses enough artistic skill to put that extra oomph into a haircut e. g texturizing. The clipper work is done almost in a matter of seconds and comes out perfectly blended with attention to all the details e.g corners and then he works his magic with the scissors. I've been to countless other barbershops and salons where they hem and haw endlessly and take almost an hour with the fade , in which time this gent would be done with three haircuts! To hell with the naysayers, Opera gets my vote! read more

This was the one and only barber shop I have been to since moving to Philadelphia about a year and a half ago and can't see myself going anywhere else. Yanni (sp) is really friendly and knows what he is doing. He does not race to get a haircut done, but can do it quickly and efficiently. I never make an appointment and there are never more than one or two people ahead of me; I laughed when he apologized for me having to wait more than 10 minutes. Overall, this is a great place to get a simple and inexpensive ($18 as of March 31) cut in Rittenhouse. read more

My go to place for my monthly haircut. Always quick, and I'm never disappointed by the results. Update from a 5 to a 3: While this has been my usual place, with little complaints until now, the last two cuts haven't been great. The last one resulted in uneven bangs and this time ended up way too short; one of those situations where the first big cut happened too fast you have to go along with the rest. I suppose in two months when it grows back I will give them one more chance before finding a new place. read more

wow i cant believe theres only one review of this place before mine. i have been going here on and off for well over ten years. my impression is that theyve been open much longer. if youre like me, and you dont want to spend more than $15 or $20 on a haircut, you'll do okay here. once upon a time, they actually played opera music on their stereo. all the time. havent heard any real opera music in there in a long time. i always get the asian dude to cut my hair. sometimes i like it. sometimes i dont. maybe im moody. usually after it grows out a bit i think its okay. as stated elsewheres, he dont take too much time with the cut either. as you can see, i dont even know his name, thats how much i care about my haircut, so, like i said, if youre like me, you will be satisfied here. read more

Great $18 haircut. In and out in 20 minutes. I go first thing on Saturdays, and never wait.
