My boyfriend and his mother raved about this place as his mother has a house in Eustis. On a Sunday afternoon, we decided to take a stroll in Mount Dora with cocktails and eats at 1921. When we entered, Chelsea recognized him and he said it was good to not just be back, but to recognize someone on the staff. Nice to say hi. We had a different bartender that I didn't catch his name, but very friendly. We were there for the happy hour menu, so ordered a couple drinks to cheers to a weekend in Florida to see his momma and family. I've never had a Wagyu burger, so decided to treat myself while he ordered duck wings. The burger was fantastic, and stunned at the amount of fries provided! So many, but they were delicious. He enjoyed his duck wings. This place is charming, and fairly spacious for a bar. Additionally, the bathrooms were clean and easy to use. Last minute reservation for New Years Eve and sooo glad I did so!! Arrived a bit early, even after walking the beautiful and fun downtown streets, so asked to sit at the bar. Got a delicious old fashion and a mocktail; Worker Bee. The bar was stately, clean, and orderly. The waitstaff was polite, poised, and knowledgeable about the where the food was sourced. The interior is either a very well restored historical building, so just styled after one, either way I kept being fascinated by it haha. Food: the reason for the 3 stars. I had high expectations because of all the praise 1921 gets and have been wanting to check it out for years. I ordered the Confit Dr. Joe's Duck Leg over Anson Mills Blue Barley, Cherry Jus & Hakurei Turnips ($40). The leg was well executed, juicy and apparently marinated and cooked for several hours, but I did spot a mildly undercooked part in it. The duck/barley ratio was 1/4 and duck on top of a what turned out to be a barley "al dente, dryish salad" was not a wise decision in my humble, non-Chef opinion. My friend's chicken liver pate with dark bread was delicious, but something I'd never thought about ordering at a restaurant. The goat cheesecake didn't taste like goat but was well executed. This was one of the top 2 recommendations for dinner in Mount Dora and where we chose to eat our first night in town celebrating my birthday. At first, I was a little worried that the menu looked a bit limited. Let me just say, I was pleasantly surprised. The location is unique with a patio entrance and cozy dining areas adorned with art throughout the inside. The food was well prepared with unique blends of flavor. We started with the rolls which were good but the pimento butter stole the show. My husband wanted to try the jalapeño poppers but we were not a fan. I chose the filet and it was the best I've had in a while. Very tender and full of flavor. My husband got the Wahoo entree and said it was just okay (but he ate half of mine). The blueberry cobbler was amazing with just the right amount of cobbler and plenty of fresh blueberries topped with ice cream. The service was stellar and our server brought out a birthday dessert with a candle at the end. Our menus were also printed with a Happy Birthday note next to the date. We visited on a Saturday evening around 6:30. The place was very busy. The dining room is very noisy and it is hard to have a conversation. The food was delicious. We had the bread for the appetizer. it is fresh and warm when it comes out and the butter is very good. I enjoyed the scallop entrée. It was delicious, however, high priced at around $45 and not many scallops. I took off a star, the service was not great. The duck was off tasting, yes I've had a lot of duck so I can say for certain it was the duck. I really wanted to like this but somehow there was just no flavor and very little seasoning and with the off taste of the duck I couldn't finish my food. I did like the rye spaetzle on my plate though it was slightly crunchy and had a great taste. The dish was really well presented. We've finally found our new favorite restaurant! The fact that this is so close to our home is dangerous for our wallets and our waistlines. My fiancé and I came to 1921 for our Anniversary dinner. We made a reservation online about a week in advance. We arrived a bit early and we were seated promptly. Our server Darcy was so kind and welcoming. It was a nice touch they gave us menus that said "Happy Anniversary" now I kinda wish I would have kept one. Since it was our first visit and a celebration dinner we wanted to sample a bit of everything. I ordered the seasonal gin-based cocktail "Kiss from a Rose" and my love went with the old fashioned. I thoroughly enjoyed my drink (so much I had a second) and my partner enjoyed his as well. We chose the Parker Rolls and Raw Oysters for our starters and they were delicious! The strawberry-lime butter was incredible! And the rolls were somehow crispy and soft all at once. I selected the diver scallops entree and my partner went with the short rib pasta. My scallops were cooked to perfection and the carrot curry purée was tasty! The short rib pasta was a bowl of comfort executed exquisitely. We had to try dessert and to my delight the sorbet was lemon sorbet. Lemon sorbet has been my favorite "ice cream" flavor since I was a child. We would go to the Häagen Dazs scoop shop in Winter Park and they always had lemon sorbet and I've tried just about every version I've ever seen, but this one...this one puts my favorite to shame! So new favorite! The only downside to this magical experience is that the menu can change daily based on what's in season, etc. so I may never get to have it again. We loved the art pieces on the walls and the dining room had a nice volume level. It was also nice to not be cramped in close quarters. I visited this restaurant yesterday with a group of 12 people. The entire bill was charged to one person's card, and I only used my card to pay for one drink. Yet somehow, both of our cards were charged $400 each. When I called to get an explanation, I spoke to ADAM CRANE, the so-called manager, who claimed to be "as high as it gets" in terms of supervisors. Instead of addressing the issue, he refused to explain why I was charged and hung up on me when I pointed out how unprofessional he was being. Yes, a manager hung up on a customer with a legitimate concern. My colleague, who actually paid for the meal, later called and was told one card had been charged by accident. The waitress never informed us this mistake even happened. Between the lack of communication and a manager who clearly has no idea how to handle customer concerns, this place is a joke. Not only was the composition of the menu impressive, but the execution of the menu was perfect. Service is also impeccable. You feel like you're at a Michelin restaurant, and I hope they find their way onto the Guide one day soon. The location is wonderful; right in the middle of the very walkable downtown Mount Dora. Any trip to this city should end with a meal here. Cons: There are no cons with this place. Not a one. We stopped into 1921 during the craft fair weekend, it's a really unassuming spot that packs a punch. We really wish we lived closer. The service was on point, the drinks were refreshing and the food was packed with flavor. I got oysters to start and had the stone crabs for my meal, they were so fresh and the mustard sauce was perfect. I'm giving this evening's experience a four star though it might be a three and a half for several reasons. First of all, we struggle when we come to Mount Dora to visit our in laws as we are foodies and this place has limited options. So that being said, we came down on the spur of the moment this afternoon and were happy to get a reservation here. We had dined here several years ago. We started with the wonderful buns with honey butter that I remembered from our last visit (forgot the photo as we dived in) . They are so delish. I decided on a bowl of soup and a salad for my dinner. The soup was a nice squash bisque but it was not as warm as it should have been and hard to eat after a few minutes as it was thick and cold. The salad was fresh but so over dressed with dressing that I could not eat it. My hubby and his Dad both chose the Wagu burgers with fries and both thought they were very good. I brought my own wine and paid the corkage fee of $20, my husband had a lite beer from their craft beer menu and my father in law had a glass of red wine. The interior is very inviting and fun. For dining , there are choices of tables, bar seats, and outdoor seating. I think it's good but a tad overpriced for what you get. And the service lacks a bit too. read more

Service sucked, but kitchen staff were nice. I love 1921 and in the past, I've given a great review. But when you order a drink, and are told by the server that the bartender said, "that whiskey belongs to the owner - you can't have it - it's just for him", that doesn't get your evening off to a good start with friends, who are having their first meal, here. Frankly, I was embarrassed, because of the refusal to serve a drink - the very same one that had been previously "offered" to us. Then, when you order 4 raw oysters that never arrived, you begin to realize the female server is not only insensitive to your dining experience, but equally clueless. She also walked away from our table (at least 3 times) before we had a chance to ask her for a second drink (dirty martini, espresso martini, and iced tea and water), a side of mayo or ordering an extra side dish. She seemed disengaged, and only willing to do what absolutely necessary. The food (what actually arrived) was all exceptional, however. The quail, wagyu burgers, fish special and roasted chicken (collard greens and carrots) were all beautifully prepared and tasted amazing. And on our way out, we passed by the kitchen, where the chef/cooks were all friendly and showed genuine appreciation to us, as customers. Sadly, at 1921 I'm starting to get the sense that good service is for the well-known and more elite locals, who the owners clearly chummy-up to. If you're some nobody like us walking in, then expect to be treated as such. There's other fine restaurants in the area, who clearly appreciate our business. 1921 will continue to draw lots of patrons (especially more fancy folks) - but it'll be awhile before we find ourselves back here, even if we become multi-millionaires or local politicians. read more

Wood Oven ROASTED OYSTER with Mushroom Duxelle, Foie Gras & Country Ham Butter 6 each 4/5. Didn't taste much of the foie, but overall pretty good. Pan Roasted SCALLOPS with BigDaddy's Fennel, Poached New Skin Potatoes & Brandied Peach Cream 38 5/5. Scallops were cooked well, and the peaches, peach cream, and potatoes complemented really well. Definitely preferred this over the traditional corn pairing. Slow Turtle Goat Cheese CHEESECAKE with Pearson Farms Pecans 12 4/5. I want to first start off by saying that this restaurant is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! The natural lighting and art in the restaurant creates a warm & inviting atmosphere that is also elegant. For our starters we ordered the Toasted Parker House Rolls, the Raw Oysters, and the Roasted Oysters. The House Rolls were perfect! They were perfectly toasted with a nice buttery/salty crust that was complimented the roll very well. But honestly the star of the show were the Raw Oysters. Now I've never had a raw oyster in my life prior to this but I'm pretty sure these are the best of the planet! My partner even agreed that they were the best ones he's had. The Roasted Oysters were phenomenal as well! Easily hands down I think their starters are out of this world. After, the starters being so great we both were excited for our entrees. Unfortunately, the entrees missed the mark. They were decent but not great. I got the Ribeye Steak & at the price point of $82 I was expecting for it to be amazing! But, yet it was lacking flavor & all though I asked for it medium rare it came out rare. My partner also stated that the Pork Ribeye although had some great elements it was lacking overall.
