Hello all that read my posts...found a place in Memphis to get a great haircut. Been traveling quite a bit so the hair was getting out of hand so I went on the hunt for a cut. Seems like there are some mixed reactions to 1776 but I had a wonderful experience. I was able to get a same day appointment with Shannon. I got a skin fade with the straight razor option and I'm glad I did. I love getting my hair cut; a hot towel and Shannon's light touch with the razor made for a relaxing experience. I got a good haircut, and then the worst of my life from DJ. I asked her to give me a trim to prepare for an interview, and she took my hair from 4+ inches down to literally a fade. She asked if I wanted it "over my ear" or "above" which I replied "over" and she asked if the back should be longer and I said "yes, longer" I just measured and the hair at the back is .5 inches down to nothing! Great experience! Appointment was easy to book, parking was easy, and the provider started right on time. The haircut and beard trim was very good, the beard especially was out of control lol, but she fixed it. Offered a shampoo and when I was paying she noticed I was military (retired) and offered a discount without me asking. When you walk into this barber shop, you feel very welcome, the smells of their hair products are amazing, and the tunes are always on point on the little speaker. As an Asian-American, I have very straight and thick hair, where not many people are crafted to fade and cut my type of hair without it being very uneven or getting blades caught, but Emily has perfected the art of my hair and never fails to continue the works. Also, she uses a straight razor for my hard part, which I like because it lasts longer. It feels so nice that they will shampoo out your hair (included with the cut) and provide a hot towel for your face, just for an extra pamper. I used to live 25 minutes away from this location, but now go to Ole Miss (1.5 hours away), but it is so worth the drive since I can't trust other barbers in the area. I have put off writing this review for two weeks. I like to be fair about how I feel about people, and frankly, I know how tough it is to make a living. OK. So now the "but." Two weeks ago I got a totally awful haircut at 1776. I went there because I expected styling. I am an actor, and the cut matters. I've been fortunate for the last two years that I've had a totally great stylist. He disappeared curing the pandemic, so I was left looking for someone who could cut hair in a similar fashion. Based on other reviews, I thought 1776 would be it. I took in photos of other styles like mine. I asked the stylist if he understood what I wanted. etc. he said he did. When finished with the cut, I pointed out the cut was OK but hat it did not have the "feathering" in the hair like I wanted. I pointed that out in the photos I brought. The stylist said, "I guess I don't understand." He kept repeating that, so, I gave up. Paid for the cut, plus a nice tip and left. After two weeks of hearing from friends, ..."your hair doesn't look anything like it's usual, don't you hate it?" I decided to write this review. Avoid 1776 at all costs. You will get, like so many places in Memphis, just what the cutter wants to give you. That's it. End of story. In addition, while 1776's website looks looks like it's wide open with shaves and a large space. It is not. It's located in an extended portable building. Let the buyer beware. read more

The most unfriendly hair stylist I've ever seen. She doesn't talk to you at all and never cracks a smile.

I've always been hesitant to go out to get my haircut mostly because I don't trust many people with my hair since it has a mind of its own and is difficult to cut, but John absolutely killed it! My hair naturally parts down the middle and it's hard to get curtain bangs that don't look absolutely stupid when they're too short, or ragged when they're too long. John cut my hair perfectly. Not to mention he's a super cool dude and great at making you feel welcome. I can't stop looking in the mirror! Thank you so much John for giving me my confidence back! During a month long trip to Memphis for work I needed a haircut and trim of my facial hair. I didn't like the yelp reviews from the other locations around town and this place had one of the best reviews. I didn't have an appointment which was fine because they take walk-ins. They were nice and it was busy but they got to me quickly. I can not recall the females name that gave me my haircut but she was nice. The only reason I don't give the place a higher rating is the actual haircut left me with a feeling of being a bit cheated. I asked for a fade, and being from Miami I understand that can mean something else in Memphis. What I received was a buzz cut really. When I asked about the square up on the cut, she squared the back. Again, maybe different terminology used in different cities. I felt uncomfortable at that point explaining it all to her since she didn't know what I meant to begin with, she may do it wrong. I don't blame her, she didn't really do much to my face so she didn't charge me for the trim, but for the price I could've purchased a machine at Walmart and cut my own hair. I recommend this place, I just wouldn't spend that high a price personally ever again. read more

It is pretty uncommon for me to get a good haircut. Being an Asian male, I have the typical straight hair that sticks right up that, for some barber/ess, can pose a challenge. With that said, I dread it when my hair gets lengthy to a point that desperately need a haircut. In the past when I walked into barbershops, I come in with a hope that I'll come out looking half decent. The chain that I used to go has been pretty much a gamble. This place is has been 2 for 2 in terms of my satisfaction. I've been here twice, and both times I have come out extremely happy with my haircut. Not to mention, everyone here is cool and even offers you beer if you want one! Sadly I don't live in Memphis anymore, but I do come back occasionally to visit the family. This place is awesome! They do great work with beards (the only hair I have) and have been taking care of me for a few months now. Caitlin is my go-to person in the shop, never had anybody else yet. She does a great job, pays good attention to detail, and gets me in and out when I need her. Had my hair cut at both locations a couple different times now, And I think overall they do a okay job. I don't think the quality of barbers and stylist are as good as others in town. However, they are definitely better than a simple cut from sports clips. Not my first choice but they definitely are great for a walk in appointment. All the stylists are very talented, but I want to give a specific shout out to Antoinette. She always listens closely to what I'm looking for--but is willing to make recommendations as well. Was referred by a friend I work with and am wondering why this place does not pop up on the "barbers" search for the greater Memphis area on Yelp (Get it together yelp). But anyway, I have been to three or four of the highly rated places in the Memphis area and they were all just mainstream generic cuts. They say they do straight razor shaves, but they only do straight razor trims. THAT IS NOT 1776!!! 1776 is a very comfortable casual atmosphere with friendly barbers and stylist. The place was busy! But everyone was pleasant and attentive to the people in the chairs and waiting! My barber was just a little bit behind schedule (5 min, but it was rush hour) so they gave me a free beer while I waited! Cary was my barber and she did an amazing job! I asked her to take the straight razor high on the sides for a nice high razor fade. She was the first barber I've found in Memphis that actually listened to what what I wanted! She even referred me to a barbershop in dallas while I am at school! The quality of work at 1776 is by far the best I've seen in Memphis. read more

Ok, so this is by far and away the best grooming experience I've ever had. Gina snuck me end at the very end of an understaffed day and I didn't feel rushed at all. It's also the best value I've ever gotten out of a haircut. For 25$ I had a very patient and detailed cut, friendly staff, great tunes, and they went the extra. Mile with a beer and shot of whiskey (good stuff too) for both me And my fiance! I was honestly blown away. The atmosphere is very relaxed and not at all pretensious. Possibly the worst haircut experience I've had to endure. I go in and Jessica Leet cuts my hair. I am a male by the way. She didn't thin my hair whatsoever even after I asked her to. I asked again "are you sure you thinned it out up here?" and she said yes even though I know she didn't. I was watching. Then I asked her to cut a specific strand of hair off and she wouldn't do it because "it would make it uneven." Excuse me? If I want this piece of hair cut shorter and I'm paying you and tipping you, you better not reject me. Then other haircut woman there goes out on a cig break, and another customer walks in. She sees him, and immediately starts rushing through my haircut so she can get to him. My hair looked awful at the end. I immediately left and went to Super Cuts so they could fix it, and they did. I will never go back here and I hope no one else does either. read more
