The owner is a very unstable person. While from other reviews the food is presumably good and one of the persons in our group also vouched for that from their previous experience, avoid the place if you do not want to risk spoiling your lunch or dinner. I sent this review to the restaurant and gave them more than 24 hours to let me know if something here is not according to how they remember the events but they have not responded as of writing this review. -- Full Version -- Our group ordered pizzas to go while it was quite pleasant and sunny. After 30 minutes of waiting, they said it would take another 10 minutes. By that time the weather had turned quite rainy and we asked if we could convert the order to dine-in since their delay had cost us the opportunity to sit at Regent's park and eat. The head waitress seemed to grudgingly agree and asked us to sit outside. We requested one of the waitresses to extend the awning so as not to have us get drenched. She obliged cheerfully. Then we were surprised to see the awning being pulled in again. On inquiring, the main waitress told me that there was some rod they had extended under the awing for some purpose and that it wouldn't be able to take the weight. I asked her if she expected us to get drenched eating, especially when it was clearly their fault for delaying the 'to-go' order. I told her that that behavior was unacceptable and ridiculous and that they would get bad reviews from all of us if we were treated that way. At this point, the owner called me inside and then I had a surreal experience. First he outright lied that the awning could not go further to which I responded that one of his waitresses had put it a foot further before it was pulled back. Caught in a white lie, he proceeded to say the same thing about the rod not being able to take the weight (which it clearly was able to 5 min ago assuming the awning was even resting on it). Then he proceeded to say "use your brain". I have seldom encountered such a crass and ill mannered person and definitely not in the hospitality industry. I told him that that kind of language is unacceptable and furthermore that he could rest assured that I use my brain since I am a theoretical physicist and a machine learning engineer. I further countered that it is in fact he who ought to use his brain. At this point he completely lost it and called me an idiot, said that I "don't have a brain" and said something with the F-word but I can't quite remember if it was name calling or telling me to F-off. Normally, one would think the story would end here since I just paid for our coffees and we left the place for another pizzeria. As luck would have it, we ended up at Pesantissimo across the street. While we were about to order, the same guy showed up and snatched the menu out of the hands of one of the women in our group and told the waitress not to take our order. This is the absolute worst restaurant and I would advise people to avoid it at all costs. To say it was a disaster would be an understatement. Before we even arrived the staff seemed rude on the phone, and seemingly knew nothing about the voucher. Part of this included my partner having to rearrange to an hour later than our original time (this was 3 hours before we were meant to be there) as she would be late, and we were sharply told 'it doesn't matter just be late!' and then she immediately hung up. The main resturaunt was closed due to a private function, so we were eating next to the bar. This wasn't a problem but due to the function everyone's orders were seemingly delayed. This was at no point communicated to us by the staff. When it came to ordering, the staff again seemingly knew nothing about the voucher and had to check what was valid with the offer. While they were checking we were given a cocktail each. We did not ask for the cocktail nor were we told what it was. My partner, who rarely drinks, found this especially odd as she didn't plan on drinking alcohol. After receiving our starters some half an hour in, perfectly reasonable, they were nice but very small leaving us eager for our mains. After waiting over an hour before our mains (when other tables, who had ordered after us, finally started recieving their mains) we inquired as to where ours were. We were first told that our offer didn't include mains, dispite the fact we had already ordered them, our voucher includes them, and we had been told they would be included. The waiter had even commented on how nice the cheese board was. We were then told by another member of the wait staff that our waiter had in fact forgotten to place the order for our mains, and it would be another 20 minutes before they would be ready. She decided it was actually our fault for not alerting them sooner, even though we had tried and failed to catch our waiters attention for the past 10 minutes. Prior to this we assumed it was the same delay affecting everyone else, so we didn't feel the need to query as any person normally would, especially since one gentlemen from another table had complained and had been told it was simply the kitchen struggling to cope with the event. If the restauraunt wasn't going to be able to cope with the private function, then they should not have closed the kitchen to the rest of the public. They then offered us the leftover meals from the private function upstairs as they apparently had some spare, while these wouldn't be hot they said they'd be at our table much sooner. We found this extremely insulting. How can a restauraunt, whose mains cost around £17 each, pride itself on the quality of its food with this kind of attitude. We decided this was enough and stormed out of the resturaunt. Instead we visited the nearby McDonalds who served us far more food far quicker. Perhaps the Savannah should consider new ownership. I am more than disappointed with the standard of service we received and would advice everyone to steer clear, there are plenty of other nearby restauraunts that will actually serve you.

It's a pretty, quirky space and staff are really friendly. The pass is open and you can see back into the kitchen. On the day I was there, Bea herself was expediting (she's certainly a demanding boss!) so I had high hopes. I ordered the ranch chickadee and a small sweet potato fries, and a Coke. The food came really, really quickly - alarmingly quickly. Unfortunately it was to the detriment of the sandwich. The chicken was cooked through and hot, but as you can see from the photo, it was a bit insipid looking. The beef bacon wasn't even warm, which was a shame, and only one small piece. However, my sandwich tasted okay, and the sweet potato fries were probably the best I've had. I didn't like the little plastic baskets - I always feel that they're not cleaned properly, and they're hard to eat out of. We want plates! I put up a little video because the table seriously vibrated every time someone walked by (which they did a lot). It was to the point of distraction, honestly. I hope once the floor 'settles' in that the shake is dampened. I was on my own, and I couldn't get anywhere near finishing my food. It's one of my main criticisms of these kind of places - the sides are best shared, so I waste a fair bit of food. My meal, with a tip, was nearly £20 - holy moly. I do want to go back and try the country fried steak, the biscuits and gravy, and the sloppy joe. But I think I'll have to wait till payday!

Boondocks is located not too far from Old Street underground and very accessible by car and buses that stop near the venue. When you walk in there is someone to greet and seat you. The USA flag on the wall promotes that this is a Soul Food restaurant. But what was really nice was the quirky decor, from old newspaper wall paper to fairy lights to animal horns on the wall. Even the toilet was designed to have a tin bucket for a sink. On paper it sounds nuts but actually works really well in person. As for the pancakes there is a choice of plain, blueberry, strawberry and chocolate chip. I couldn't decide between strawberry and chocolate chip so they allowed me to have half and half. The fresh strawberry's are stewed in a hot sauce then added to the pancakes. It was ok but I wish I had some uncooked strawberry's too as the cooked ones were in a weird place of soft on the outside and hard in the middle. The chocolate chip pancakes again just ok. On the plus note the pancakes did come with fluffy fresh vanilla pod cream. I'm not a pancake person so they didn't taste amazing to me. My friends unfortunately also felt the same way. The staff were very friendly but the service lacked a bit when the waitress didn't offer the drinks menu. I had to ask for it but then she didn't come back to get our orders. In the end I spotted a waiter bringing a bottle of water to another table and asked him to bring one over to us. It's a shame as the bar options looked interesting but I found out not all the drinks options for hot and soft drinks are on the menu. The venue does have wifi, the waitress gave me the password but it wouldn't work properly. I managed to check in on Yelp then it gave up. Overall the venue looks cool with the quirky decor and I always like the idea of an open kitchen so you can check out how the food is being prepared. The other soul food options people were ordering looked interesting but judging on the pancakes alone it was quite disappointing to eat. Let's hope the restaurant does some fine tuning on the food and service at least as it's not a bad place to hang out.
