Outstanding mead! Loved chatting about the process and other meaderies in the area. All the meads we tried were lovely. I look forward to coming back, especially in warmer weather to enjoy a tasting on the patio.

Amazing place - meads: Really enjoyed the sweet basil note and scent from 100. It has $12 tasting and every single six item was worth it. -sparkling mead: had raspberry lime and orange spiced and I preferred raspberry lime which wasn't too sweet or too dry. -The owner couple was so sweet - I love to hear how they started this meadery. They were super friendly and kind. Will definitely come again!

Stopped by for an afternoon tasting after discovering 1634 at a local concert event. It was a beautiful spring day to sit out under the awnings provided, and Matt was prompt in welcoming our group and presenting our tasting options. We decided to try the flights for $12 which included a 6 sample variety. Matt was thorough and explained our flights with great detail, which we appreciated! We all enjoyed the samples and had a tough time choosing our favorites. We also met the owner, Dan, who was friendly and happy to share his passion, answer our questions, and told us more about their operation. Both Matt and Dan were gracious hosts and made our afternoon enjoyable! They also have a small bar inside for tastings year round. We all left with a bottle to bring home, and would certainly return. Highly recommend stopping by for a tasting and to pick up a bottle of their many offerings!

This place has been on my list of establishments to visit in the area since I worked in New England back in 2018. I never made it then but I finally made it now. It's hard to miss as it's located at an interesting intersection of roads. But it's basically a small space with a garage and outdoor seating. We enjoyed the flight with all of the samples to try. My favorite was The Viking victory. It was very sweet and tasted of honey which was my favorite. The others were also pretty good. I ended up buying two bottles of the stuff. Owners were really friendly and were able to share about the whole process. Glad to have finally made it!

Fun! You get a few set tastings for $10 plus a sample of your choice of other seasons meads (I tried the pear ginger, which was very good). I had a difficult time deciding between a bottle of the blueberry or the Viking Mead, which was a interesting problem to have. While some meads are on the fruitier or sweet side of the palate, they also have drier meads. The tasting room is on the smaller side, so this may not be ideal for larger groups or for people who can't stand for short periods of time. The whole tasting doesn't take long though, so a nice, quick stop for someone(s) looking for an experience outside the slightly more typical wine or beer venues. The owners also source almost every ingredient locally, so you're getting a really good taste of Ipswich!

I was in Ipswich two months ago and finally got to visit this establishment. Was offered a sampling, but had to pass as I had a fair amount of driving to do. Dan's advice was very helpful in choosing two bottles which, thankfully, survived the flight back to Dallas in my luggage. The raspberry was delicious and can't wait to the strawberry rhubarb after it gets cooler.

A little gem in Ipswitch. Here for a tasting. The little shop is just adorable and idyllic. The girl working the counter was pleasant and talked at length about the different meads available, each style and their unique characteristics. It's a small, intimate space. Not neccessarily ideal for large groups, but a nice little date idea, or a quick activity outing. There was one other couple here, so it went pretty quickly. The meads are pretty good, nothing that stood out to me. It's a local business and I applaud the owners for following their dream and making a local product with as much local ingredients as possible. Of course blueberries are from Maine, considering they're delicious it only makes sense. It's still a New England product and in my book that counts. I love that glasses come with the tasting, they're great bulbous sherry-style glasses and are great for mead. We enjoyed using them at home.

I've never had mead before, so I decided to come here to taste some mead! This place is small and popular. We decided to do 5-6 mead tastings for $5. if you want to drink less alcohol, you can share a tasting, but I highly recommend NOT sharing. I am a lightweight and managed to drink all my mead. The way they do it is similar to wine tastings- from dry to sweet. If you like sweet drinks like me, you will definitely enjoy tastings towards the end. Here were some of the my favorite meads: The Viking Victory: This is made with bamboo honey and has a cinnamon taste to it. Apparently its new and has been flying off the shelves. It was one of my favorites. Strawberry Fields: The strawberries come from a local farm nearby. It was sweet and delicious. I was looking forward to tasting this one the most! Citrus Breeze: This mead tasted like oranges and basil. Very nice combination. There is a room at the back where they do a quick tour of how they make meade. You can even try popping the wine cork into the bottle and putting labels on the bottles. Everything is done by hand here, which is pretty cool. You can also buy the meades online but they sell out quickly... so hurry up!

Many different meads to choose from. The Devil's Footprints was my favorite.

Awesome place! Delicious mead and very friendly staff. The tasting gets you about 5-6 different tastings of mess for $5. The Devil's Footprints was my favorite. The tour was a awesome as well. I highly suggest going here.

Good drinks and service, no outside food…read more I have been coming to Nashoba Valley Winery for years now. They have a spectacular variety of wines, liquors and beers to choose from. Their beverage offerings really run the gamut, and are worth stopping in to peruse. I particularly like the fruit wine here, and always make it a point to get a bottle. Their property is very large and has planted vines and fruit trees on the farm. In the store you will find their products, a bar, and a restaurant. They also have a huge event space and tasting room that demonstrates some very nice wood beam construction. They offer glasses and bottles as well as guided tastings, and another tasting system where you buy tokens that can be exchanged at different rates for a taste of one of their products. This system can be frustrating and a bit disjointed (lots of getting up and down and exchanging tokens). They do allow you to buy more tokens to try more drinks, and you even get to keep your glass! Service is wonderful as always. The staff are very attentive and kind to the visitors. I will comment that Nashoba does not allow outside food. This can be very disappointing if you plan on bringing your own charcuterie. They do offer food on a limited menu. This can be disappointing for picky eaters, but they do try to offer a variety of items for everyone to enjoy. Definitely make a trip out here for some delicious drinks!!

I was pleasantly surpirsed to get seated with no reservation for a party of 2. I do recommend having a reservation though as it can get busy. The atmosphere is great for people who like sitting outdoors on a nice day as there are a ton of tables with umbrellas to keep people cool. You are able to scan a QR code to order anything off the menu and the service is great as the staff brings you the drinks to your table. For food they will text you when to pick up from kiosk. As for the drinks my friend and I both got the sangria, raspberry bellini, and fall sampler. All of the drinks were really refreshing and worth the price. The charcuterie and pretzel bites we got were also great for a nice winery day and the menu is pretty expansive so I want to try some other items in future visits. There were a lot of bees at some of the tables near where I sat and they often crowed the drinks and food so that it something to note. I definitely plan to come back next summer!

One of the…read morebiggest draws was their $1 tastings, yes, just one dollar for a taste of their ciders, wine and spirits, which is really fun and makes sampling without commitment super easy. The service was great, our server, Courtney, was exceptionally friendly, helpful in guiding us through the selection, and made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. I want to note, as a point of context, that in September the production facility of Sweetgrass's main operation in Union suffered a devastating fire. Despite that, the Portland tasting room remains open and functioning, which is a testament to their resilience. On the tasting side the variety was solid, and the $1 price point made it easy to try a bunch of things. The ambiance is cozy and inviting. If I were to pick one improvement, I'd say the tasting pours felt a bit light compared to some other spots I've been to....not a complaint, just an observation given the price point and expectations. In all, Sweetgrass is a strong pick if you're looking for a laid-back, local winery/distillery stop in Portland with friendly staff (shoutout to Courtney) and wallet-friendly tastings.

Sweetgrass Winery & Distillery is a farm winery and distillery that opened in Union, Maine in 2005…read more It was founded by husband and wife Keith & Constance Bodine. Keith has been in the alcohol business since 1992, and he earned his MS degree in Food Science and Enology. Constance has been called the heart, soul and brains behind the business. She spends most of her time in the fields, gardens and barns that produce the various ingredients used for making their wine and spirits. Sweetgrass is Maine's first farm winery & distillery; using over 70,000 pounds of Maine-grown fruit and grain each year. The distilled spirits are hand crafted in old world tradition with a copper alembic, still capturing the full flavors of their gin, rum, and traditional apple brandy. A secondary tasting room and retail shop opened on historic Fore Street in the Old Port section of Portland in February 2014. In September 2025, a debilitating fire destroyed the Union facility. The Old Port location remains open, but the future of the Union location remains uncertain. My extended family and I visited Sweetgrass's Portland location this past summer while we were vacationing in Maine. While exploring Old Port, we walked past their window and I said, "Hey, this looks like a cool place!" We went inside and signed up for a tasting. For just $10, customers can choose any five wines, ciders or spirits to taste. The five that I chose included "Maine Hard Imperial Cider" (Dry Cider), "Blueberry Smash" (Semi-Sweet Dessert Wine), "Back River Gin", "Cranberry Gin", and "Apple Brandy". The latter was easily my favorite of the tasting, but unfortunately they had no more bottles for purchase. I plan on ordering some online in the future. I am so happy that I discovered the Old Port tasting room by chance. I felt really bad when I learned later on that the Union location burned down. I'm happy to hear that no one was hurt and I hope that they are able to rebuild.
