Dr. LeMay has been exceptional throughout the entire process. He always takes the time to clearly explain all of my options and offers thoughtful, honest recommendations. Even when discussing products or treatments they offer, I never feel pressured--he's mindful of affordability and helps me choose what truly makes sense for Louie. I never feel pushed toward non-essential items, which I really appreciate. I feel confident that Louie is receiving compassionate, trustworthy care.

Basic labs were drawn, revealing a high T4 level, and so Dr. Alizaine recommended starting methimazole for hyperthyroidism. When I asked about if it could be falsely high because of her illness or if it's possible the sample wasn't handled properly (since warm samples can cause elevated T4 in bloodwork) Dr. Alizaine brushed me off completely. I asked about re-testing when she was less acutely ill and he essentially told me that to wait longer to treat was to want my cat to get sicker and sicker. And so we started treatment. A week later on a Thursday we brought kitty back in because her food intake had gone down (but still eating half her normal) and asked for more bloodwork. He said no, it's the UTI and she got bloodwork last week, sent us home. Saturday morning I wake up and kitty is YELLOW. Rushed her to the emergency vet to find her AST/ALT (liver values) are so high they can't even quantify them. A feeding tube for a month, many tears, antibiotics, and repeated inpatient hospital stays later, I'm out $17,000 and armed with the knowledge that methimazole can cause these liver damage and failure in 1-2% of cats, not that Dr. Alizaine ever mentioned this. I was quiet at this point. Medication adverse effects are a risk we have to take to treat disease. However, the last couple months we have been looking to radioactive iodine therapy for kitty's hyperthyroidism. We took her off the methimazole for labs as instructed and surprise, surprise - two entire months after being off the meds, and kitty's thyroid levels are perfect. The thyroid experts say it was probably a one-off value, maybe a lab error or a swapped sample, but not something we'll ever know. Regardless, kitty does NOT have hyperthyroidism, and good amount of my heartache and pain from last year could have been avoided or improved if Dr. Alizaine had just ordered repeat bloodwork or listened to our concerns before kitty went jaundiced. Overall, Dr. Alizaine genuinely seems to care for your pet and their health. But he does not listen to reasonable requests from the pet parents and bulldozes them into following his treatment plan without making sure it's right. Thankfully I've moved at this point, but it's safe to say I would not recommend Dr. Alizaine as a vet to anyone.

Oof, I will not come to VCA South Weymouth again. I'll keep it relatively brief for you, but…read moreprobably not if I'm being honest. You ever had one of those weeks, sorry, years, where you had the opposite effect of the Midas touch--where everything you touched turned to total crap instead of gold? Well, after a really financially depleting week due to some unforeseen circumstances, I came in during the afternoon with my cat who had started showing symptoms of having an ear issue earlier that morning. My cat was examined and I was given the estimate. Upon reading that big beautiful bill, my heart sank right down into my butt. I told the male tech I didn't have that kind of money and asked if VCA had a payment plan option. He informed me that while they didn't have a payment plan option, they did accept CareCredit. I was able to apply and qualify immediately. Thank goodness. When he left the exam room, I could hear him talking on the other side of the door telling his coworkers how I had remarked that I couldn't afford the procedure. I heard a snippet of "she was saying she can't' pay . . . " and then he said to his coworkers, verbatim, "Maybe you shouldn't have a cat then." I don't know many people who have $2k just sitting in their bank account. I'm sure it must be nice for those that do. I'm a hard working, single parent who has a lot of expenses to cover and I, or anyone else, shouldn't be judged or made to feel ashamed of their financial situations--or feel the need to explain it to random vet staff or the internet when resources like CareCredit exist for these exact situations. I care about my cat; if I didn't, I wouldn't have brought him in. This wasn't my first rodeo with an emergency pet visit or having to utilize CareCredit. But it was the first time I ever heard a staff member judge me, loudly, on the other side of an exam room door to his coworkers. I knocked on the door and loudly said, "Uh, hey, I can hear you." Another vet tech came in the room and he surprisingly confirmed what I had heard. He stated that he had heard a staff member make that comment though he claimed that he "didn't know who it was." I was at this point, admittedly, sobbing, and feeling like complete garbage not just as a pet owner, but as a human being trying to exist in this expensive, capitalist hellscape. It was just the crap covered cherry on top of the chocolatey crap sundae I'd been served recently. After I pulled it together, I left the exam room and I made a complaint to the kind woman at the desk as I set up the CareCredit payment with her and left to cool off as my cat was taken in to be treated. The vet called to fill me in on how my cat was doing, and honestly, I was kind of glad to hear that he had been a bit difficult and given them some hell after how terrible I felt overhearing the staff talking about me. My cat did well under sedation and his medical issue was taken care of. For that I am grateful. I will mention that the vet apologized for the staff member's behavior, as did the woman I spoke with checking out, and another staff member over the phone. The emergency exam fee was also waived from my final bill, which I appreciated, but it doesn't change the fact that best practices need to be taught and implemented among staff. I don't anticipate or expect an apology from the judgmental and unprofessional tech who spoke poorly about me behind closed doors, but I hope that man gets an education in professionalism. A bigger hope for him is that he can maybe tap into, and discover his own tiny personal pool of empathy, so that he can begin to consider what he thinks before he speaks. Especially when paying clients, regardless of how they pay, who care about their pets, and are already stressed and worried, are behind the exam room door, listening to every, single, cruel, and judgmental word.

It seems SBAH has taken on too many clients and can no longer support existing patients. For context, our pup is currently experiencing a rapid-onset illness. While scheduling is certainly complicated through Covid, SBAH claims they are unable to schedule any new sick-visit appointments for two months due to an overcrowded schedule. A two month wait time for a sick-visit is certainly unreasonable from any vantage-point, and their response to our push for an earlier time slot was "we have this talk with an upset client everyday, it is just how it is". There also seemed to be the reliance of blaming Covid-protocols, but 6+ months into Covid and currently-loosening restrictions, it seems like a strange crutch to lean on. Generally, we have noticed a decline in services since the practice was purchased by the Banfield Network, and this has been the forcing function to ultimately leave the practice. To other Boston dog owners: this is a situation that we never thought to consider. So while well-visits / check-ups can be scheduled far in advanced without issue, reconsider enrolling at this practice if you plan to rely on them when it really matters. It was a poor-feeling to be denied help when we really needed our vet's advice =/
