It's not particularly hard to find Jamaican food in northern NJ, BUT it is difficult to find great ones. 14 Parish is one such institution and it's a staple in the Hackensack area. They're open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The food is always delicious and well-priced. My go to items here are the jerk chicken and stewed oxtail. You can't really go wrong with either. The jerk chicken is smokey, moist, and fully of flavor. The oxtail is cooked to tender perfection and the gravy that it's cooked in goes so very well with the rice & peas. Not much more to say about this place. If you want great authentic Jamaican food, this is the place to check out. read more

Don't get me wrong, the food was delicious but my salmon arrived cold! Like refrigerator cold! They could've at least microwaved it for a minute or two to make me think it was fresh. I would try this place again but I'll go in person to make sure my food is hot. read more

We ordered from 14 Parish again today thru Ubereats. We ordered stew chicken, jerk chicken, oxtail, bbq chicken, extra sides of yams, mac and cheese, potato salad, and 5 beef patties. When the order arrived, the beef patties were missing. Apparently they do not serve patties anymore because it's no longer on the Grubhub menu and it's no longer on their actual menu on their site. I looked at their site a few minutes ago and the patties are not on there at all. I guess they forgot to call Ubereats and get it removed from there (at first, we thought it was a mistake with grubhub so that's why we went with ubereats and ordered the patties from there). The issue is, the receipt from Ubereats was printed out and stapled to our bag. There's no way the restaurant didn't see that our order included 5 beef patties for $16.25. They had to read the rest of the order so of course they saw we also ordered the beef patties. At any point, they could have called to inform us they no longer carry these or ran out or whatever the case is. It really looks like they just tried to keep our money. Went for Monday-Saturday Lunch Special Food - 3/5. Jerk chicken was pretty juicy with decent amount of char on the skin. The sauce wasn't too memorable as there wasn't much of that deep spiciness or that smoky flavors that you expect from jerk sauce. The rice and vegetables were pretty average with an alright level of fluffiness on the rice but not much standing out for the vegetables. Service - 3/5. They clearly have a lot of locals at the restaurant which is great but there was that hint of ignoring non-regulars which put me off a bit. Value - 3/5. As far as catering goes this restaurant was absolutely horrible! From the quality of the food to the delivery of the service; I mean, who shows up to a function without providing utensils to share the food, there was also the issue of them not having enough servers to "cater" to the event. It was absolutely ridiculous and I mean that in every sense of the word. The quality of the food is not even worthy of note as the "curried goat" had parts that looked like what would appear as cow skin. My patrons were genuinely displeased with the delivery and overall execution of this establishment. That's the reason why I wouldn't come back because I wouldn't want to take the chance of my chicken being served cold again! It would of been really good if it was served hot! So you might really like this place if you luck out and get served chicken that isn't cold! I can see this place getting 4 stars from someone else if their chicken isn't cold! The inside is very small- just 4 chairs, so don't expect to snag a seat if that's what you're aiming for, but in any case seemed most of the customers were only present for take out. We ordered the large platters of jerk chicken and curry goat. The goat curry was coconut flavored (I could easily mistake it for a Thai-esque flavor). While the serving was plentiful, the meat wasn't as tender as expected and more boney than desired. The jerk chicken was also served in ample amount. Meat was tender, but from a flavor standpoint could use more of a spicy kick- also had fruity undertones to it but it was well balanced. The plantains, rice and beans, and cabbage that came with both dishes were all delicious. Although their food is good some times, my wife and I repeatedly received orders that wasn't ours and the servers took it upon themselves to give us others items we didn't ask for. Granted we appreciate the gesture, however, I think its more important to call the customer to inform them of the change. This is not their philosophy at all! As you can see from this photo, I took about 2 bites before stopping, shedding a couple of tears, and then proceeding to grab my phone so I can' write this review. There's a lot of words I can use to describe the emotions and thoughts that ran through my mind when I took those bites, but I'm going to go with one word, revolutionary. Yes, a strong word, but based on what I tasted in this meal, it deserves such heavy praise. The sauce was spicy with every bite yet had a perfect underlying sweetness that made a perfect combination. The chicken was fried perfectly and was still crispy underneath all of that sauce. The rice m peas I have to comment on because they were better than the usual. I also got a side of yams and they were Also absolutely delicious. The patty I got with the coco bread was great too, the bread was very soft and fluffy but the patty had a sort of crispy outside and nice soft inside.
