We got a sprawling view of the water from upstairs, which made for an enjoyable dining experience on a clear 75-degree evening. My husband had the pasta with sausage and pistachio pesto and just loved it. In fact, he said it was probably the best pesto he had ever had. I guess than implies that his dish dwarfed my homemade pesto which he used to think was the best. In all fairness, the version at Skipper's was more of a Sicilian style pesto with pistachios, whereas the pesto I make at home for us is a Genovese style pesto. So, I'll let him off the hook this time since the comparison would not be comparing apples to apples. I had the spaghetti and lobster entree, which was good, but wasn't quite what I had imagined. I envisioned that the lobster would be intact, but in fact, the lobster meat was diced into chunks. I also wanted a lesser sauce-based pasta. However, I must confess that my expectations weren't met largely due to the misinterpretation of my conversation with the waiter. Although Sardinia is a part of Italy, Sardu is also spoken, and it's different than standard Italian. They also make a nice complimentary flatbread, which is included in the standard coperto (cover charge). The flatbread alone would easily have been $15.00 in a nice San Francisco restaurant. It was really good and easily could've served four. The cover charges in Italy make so much more sense to me than being "coerced" into leaving a tip upwards of 26% in San Francisco to cover the "expected minimum standard tip" of 20% plus the additional SF Healthy Tax charges. Most importantly, I can say, without a doubt, that the service we received at every single restaurant throughout Italy would put many San Francisco restaurants to shame. We received good to superior service in Italy, without the outrageous so-called "tips" that are expected/mandated in San Francisco. Skipper is located in a beautiful area with several other restaurants to choose from. Definitely a good choice for pleasurable outdoor dining.

What a lunch. We ended up here after a drive around Northern Sardinia. I was a bit skeptical of…read morethe marina atmosphere but once stepping in, we were brought into a homey and cozy space. The menu featured a variety of local seafood and house made pasta. For me, the standout was the local specialty of fregola made with saffron and the local thin bread baked with rosemary (carasau). My husband's appetizer portion of seafood stew had oysters, clams, langoustines...so good. Our host picked out a nice bottle of local Vermintino that complimented our lunch well. We were finished off with house pours of mirto, the local liquer made from the myrtle plant.

I would have gone back there many, many nights if we hadn't found the restaurant on our last. I love when we sent our compliments to the chef, our waiter said, I will be happy to let my mom know. A couple of recommendations on food were the Mussels as a starter, Ravioli with a sweet Onion Sauce (I dream about this one - but it was a special of the day and sadly not on the menu), and the John Dory for our main. Really ridiculously wonderful place from top to bottom. Our hotel had a habit of liking to send us to their brother's, cousin's and sister's restaurants and always deterred us from going anywhere they didn't want us to by complaining about how far it was. On a map, Porto Rotondo said it was about 40-45 mins from Porto Cervo where we stayed but it was really a quick and beautiful 20-25 minute drive. Don't be dissuaded - it's worth the drive from anywhere in Costa Smeralda.

Dinner #1: Complimentary ANTIPASTI MISTO SALUMI E FORMAGGI (platter of local cured meats, cheeses and bread). All the fish and seafood dishes were fresh and cooked to perfection. SPAGHETTI ALLE VONGOLE (spaghetti w/ sweet little clams); FRITTO MISTO CALAMARI E GAMBERI (calamari & prawns deep fried in light batter); PESCE ALLE GRIGLIA (grilled catch of the day). Meal ended with a delicious Sardinian dolce called SEADAS, a crisp airy pastry filled with sweet soft cheese and drizzled with golden Sardinian honey. A perfect end to the meal and worth ordering even if you're so full you swear you couldn't eat another bite. You can. I promise. Dinner #2: Fresh caught SPIDER CRAB 2 ways, first course was a simple yet divine crab broth with crab roe and fregola (small pasta similar to couscous) followed by the main course of fresh whole crab. The pure white crab meat was sweet and soft like a salty sea mascarpone cream. As delicious as it was I could have just eaten a whole pot of the crab soup and died happy. Gloriously happy. Dinner #3: MAIALINO ARROSTO (roasted suckling pig). This was the single most delicious meal of pork I have ever tasted in my entire life. Salty-crisp skin that shatters between your teeth like glass and rich, moist, tender meat that melts like butter. The suckling pig we ate that night fulfilled its life's purpose when it arrived in maestro Lino's kitchen. I cannot over-emphasize how perfect a meal it was, accompanied only by a platter of mixed grilled vegetables. If you eat only 1 meal in Sardegna, let it be the maialino arrosto at Lino's trattoria!!! Dinner #4: TRUFFLES!! Meal began with ANTIPASTI MISTO (heirloom tomato dressed in olive oil and aged red wine vinegar, assorted cheeses, olives, bread). 1st course was room temp POACHED EGGS with gloriously runny golden yolks and grated *black* truffles. 2nd course was warm poached eggs with grated *white* truffles. Most decadent poached eggs of my life. 3rd course was al dente TAGLIATELLE tossed in olive oil, butter, and more grated truffles! The simple pasta seasoned to taste with salt & fresh ground black pepper was a perfect showcase for the rich, earthy flavour of Sardinian truffles from Laconi City. Just when I thought I couldn't eat another bite, Lino placed a 4th dish on the table: BRAISED BABY GOAT RIBS.... with shaved truffles! Not only do I adore goat, but this was the most tender, succulent goat meat I've ever tasted. The ribs were plated in a pool of bright red-orange drippings which initially made me a bit apprehensive. By the end, I was using the last crusts of bread to soak up the glorious fat drippings and savour just one last bite before surrendering defeat. We finished our last meal with espressos and an ice cold shot of MIRTO before rolling ourselves up the hill to bed. Not only is the food delicious but Lino and Marlitha make guests feel as warm and welcome as family. Even their adorable dog Daisy filled the empty spot under the table where our own pups usually sit. Despite speaking limited Italian, we were honoured to share a glass of wine with our hosts and enjoyed several animated evenings of conversation, proving that excellent food can bridge language, culture, and country. Salute!
