I would have gone back there many, many nights if we hadn't found the restaurant on our last. I love when we sent our compliments to the chef, our waiter said, I will be happy to let my mom know. A couple of recommendations on food were the Mussels as a starter, Ravioli with a sweet Onion Sauce (I dream about this one - but it was a special of the day and sadly not on the menu), and the John Dory for our main. Really ridiculously wonderful place from top to bottom. Our hotel had a habit of liking to send us to their brother's, cousin's and sister's restaurants and always deterred us from going anywhere they didn't want us to by complaining about how far it was. On a map, Porto Rotondo said it was about 40-45 mins from Porto Cervo where we stayed but it was really a quick and beautiful 20-25 minute drive. Don't be dissuaded - it's worth the drive from anywhere in Costa Smeralda.

The menu featured a variety of local seafood and house made pasta. For me, the standout was the local specialty of fregola made with saffron and the local thin bread baked with rosemary (carasau). My husband's appetizer portion of seafood stew had oysters, clams, langoustines...so good. Our host picked out a nice bottle of local Vermintino that complimented our lunch well. We were finished off with house pours of mirto, the local liquer made from the myrtle plant.

The outdoor patio was very nice, especially at sunset, but it can get hot with the sun shining on your table before it goes down completely. At this price point/the location/reputation, I guess it's not so much about the value you get with the food. The seafood was fresh & all the dishes were tasty. So, from that perspective, the restaurant delivered on the food. We were let down by the service. The good - our hotel mixed up the dates & the hostess was very professional and gracious in finding us a table. Not so good - it all went a bit downhill from there. The captain that did the seating grumbled while setting up our table & gave us a look like we were clueless tourists. After getting seated, one of the hosts (not a manager, mind you) made it a point to come by & subtly let us know he made us a favor even though he wasn't the one we worked with directly. When we were given the menu, the main wait person was a bit snooty and acted like we may not be able to afford some items on the menu. My friend, who was paying for the dinner, had a Crazy Rich Asian moment and ordered everything off the menu. Guess they got the hint. The manager came by to welcome us & they changed staff who were much more pleasant & easier to engage with. After the meal, the earlier experiences still left a bit of undesirable aftertaste & we decided to skip dessert. We went for gelatos in the mall instead :-) What a shame. We had such an amazing experience at Le Grand restaurant the previous night that we were hoping for a two out of two.

I found Il Regolo rated #1 on TripAdvisor, but couldn't find it on Google or Google Maps. We saw how highly rated it was on TripAdvisor and headed down the beach to check it out based on viewing their website pictures and the satellite pic on Google Maps. Boy are we glad we went to the trouble. Their website says they are open 09:30am-11:30pm, but they do close during the siesta - opening for dinner at 9:00pm. We spoke to the owner at 8:15pm about dinner and were told to come back at 9:00pm and they would have a table for six waiting for us. When we came back, they had a beautiful inside table overlooking the beach saved and our waiter immediately welcomed us and got us started on a Sardinian red by the bottle - it was delicious and we eventually ordered two more. He recommended a seafood appetizer, but we were all interested in cured meat and formaggia. On his suggestion, we accepted a selection of local ingredients and received two surfboard-sized platters of meats, cheeses, olives and fruit sauces as garnish. It was all ludicrously good. I was the only one of us to order primi piatti and had a grilled octopus and potato plate that was very good. Our secondi piatti selections were three grilled pork entrees, two gnocci and sausage entrees and one spicy rigatoni entree. Each were so good that we were pushing samples on each other saying "you HAVE to try this". One of our group that isn't a wine drinker was ordering Gray Goose vodka and tonics that came in heavy American pours with a ton of ice - which got nods of admiration from all of us. I saw how good they looked and had one as a nightcap. We were all incredibly satisfied with our meals and didn't think we left enough room for dessert, but our waiter brought out - unannounced - a ricotta cheese and honey desert for the table. The bill was not cheap, but was an incredible value for the experience we had. I can't rave enough how awesome this meal and our total experience at Il Regolo was. I don't give five-star reviews. I give Il Regolo five stars. It really was that good. We are definitely going back before we leave this weekend.

La Conchiglia's popularity with tourists and locals means two things: 1) the staff is running their asses off to keep up with client orders and, 2) this review is done out of appreciation, but utterly unnecessary. Our first time, we came here for dinner, arriving right around 1900 when it opens for dinner. We had no idea how lucky we were to even get a table until we saw subsequent couples get placed on a wait list outside. Within moments of opening at 1900, a line of hungry waiting customers had formed which, by the time we finished dinner an hour and a half later, had grown to circa 20 people. For a micro restaurant with seating for perhaps 35, this is an impressive.. The food was excellent, and in unusually good portions from the viewpoint of a typically overweight American (me). We went back today for lunch because we want to see the staff one more time and to get some pictures before leaving for Cagliari :-) Note: One con is the times shown on Yelp where it shows the restaurant is open all day until 2300. Instead, and characteristically for Italy, its is ACTUALLY open from 12-1500, and then again from 19-2300.
