I made it to the last day of the Skate exhibit and my first time to 111 Minna Gallery and I really enjoyed the setting. From the outside it looked like a normal building on Montgomery with restaurants and offices mixed in. I have never been here before and didn't know what to expect. Inside are like rooms with art and live artist ms scattered around doing demonstrations. There is the main room with the bar. In the bigger room with the bar it was hard to walk and maneuver around as it got crowded and it's mostly standing room. But lovely art on the skateboards which I was surprised. I guess art can be on any medium. If I come across another art event, I wouldn't mind coming back. It was an easy mini underground train ride to Montgomery station and just walk down few blocks. I went to Minna recently for an event and bravo to the staff and community that have kept the magic alive after all these years. I started coming to Minna in the late 90s. This is one of the best galleries in town- Awesome and knowledgeable staff and great curators showing top notch work of the highest caliber . The openings are always a blast featuring a full bar with affordable prices and efficient bartenders . Draws a diverse crowd composed often of Bay Area artists and the wonderful people that surround them . The often have food pop ups which are always unique and delicious featuring local folks with a range of pallets. Always a dj on the decks and tremendous support for the local scene. Minna Gallery is a perfect place to celebrate with dear friends near the Salesforce towers. A Chill place to hold corporate events and enjoy art while dining. We celebrated our Kqed Scavenger Hunt to get acquainted with our coworkers and new neighborhood along Beale St. We searched far and wide for clues to complete different challenges. The gourmet pizza, cheese, fresh fruits, and other side dishes were delicious! I enjoyed the Mezcol and French 75 Cocktail! Our 1st visit was an awesome experience! I really like the Minna Gallery but dropped their rating due to my recent experience. I had reserved a table for my company and when we arrived, people were sitting at our reserved area. I expected the bartenders and employees to help us - to ask these patrons to move, but they didn't. The bartender just shrugged at me and told me to talk to the people in the office. When I knocked on the offices door, a woman came out, said our table was there and just walked away....I had to ask the people to leave our area. It was really annoying because we had to do the asking, then we had to wait as they gathered their stuff. These other customers left their empty glasses behind and I had to walk these empty glasses to the bar to drop them off, because no employee was willing to help us. We had two small couches for 7 adults. Each couch maybe fit 3 people. I was so embarrassed because we were welcoming a new member to our team and it was meant to be a celebration. They were supposed to save three couches for us...but the patrons who came before us took one of the couches. When I asked the bartender if they had another seat, chair, couch - anything - to give to us, he just motioned for me to look around myself. FROM WHAT I CAN REMEMBER: Minna was a really good time. When I went on Saturday the theme was Club 1994. I was instantly transported back to my childhood. Scenes from tv shows (Fresh Prince/Pokemon) movies (Fifth Elements/Titanic/Clueless) and music videos (Spice Girls/Backstreet Boys/Young Britney Spears) were projected onto the wall which made for a very funny and nostalgic experience. My friend and I got a free drink for our birthday, which was nice. (you can choose between beer on tap or wine.) Also fun: 2 DJs, great art on display, a photobooth from club1994, stiff drinks got me piss drunk. The only downside is the $10 cover before 11pm and expensive drinks. A Great Spacious Venue Hosting Some Of The Best SF Events! SITREP 111 Minna Gallery is a fantastic space. And probably, I should first say as a side note, that I've NEVER been disappointment with a venue that is named after it's address! Such FUN at 550 Barneveld and 1015 Folsom in San Francisco. And back in the day, I absolutely loved our divy venue in Sacramento simply called 815 L Street. I just think there's something UNPRETENTIOUS about venues named after their address that means they are MORE focused on FUN, and LESS on IMAGE. And even though 111 Minna Gallery definitely has an astounding image in my book, it's always been more about the fun. SETUP What's remarkable specifically about 111 Minna Gallery is it's space and it's layout. High ceilings lending a complete air of spaciousness vertically. Large rooms lending a complete air of spaciousness. And GREAT BATHROOMS lending an air of complete toilet-spaciousness! But seriously, as many times as I've been here, I've always had room to breath, which I honestly can't say about two other clubs I love - DNA Lounge and Cat Club. And though I love those clubs more for their music formats, I love 111 Minna Gallery because of it's SPACE. IT'S THE ART, STUPID. But before I totally detract from the main thrust of 111 Minna Gallery's emphasis, it is primarily as it's name implies - A GALLERY. There is beautiful, edgy, thought-provoking art EVERYWHERE. On the walls, on the bar, on the DJ-platforms, on the trees, well, hell, THE TREES themselves! They're ART. And everything from floor to wall to ceiling to DUCTS are beautiful to look at. I love this place! EVENTS But as I hinted at, this venue is MORE than just about Art. It's also about music. It's about DJ-events. I wish EVERY Saturday Night could be that fun! OH MY FREAKING GOD! [And this event, of course, is what FINALLY (guiltily) prompted me to get the review for 111 Minna Gallery outta da can, and a WELL-DESERVED review it is!] PARKING It's downtown San Francisco, so what do you expect? EXCEPT, it's in a part of the downtown arena - and usually at an hour - where my parking karma seems to work well. I often will find an empty metered space (after hours) that I can happily park. But worst case scenario, there are some parking garages nearby, and WORST worst case scenario, the METREON garage is just a bit more than 2 blocks due west and 1 block north (on Mission) and usually for less than $10 if at 111 Minna for about 2-3 hours. It's not that I'm a cool blogger or anything. I just heard there were free drinks being poured if you just say "B2" to the bartender. Turned out to be true. It wasn't horribly crowded. In fact, no one was sitting on that weird couch in the front room..nope, just me and Jamie W. downing our respective third cups of gin-and-tonic. All of a sudden, the funky art started to look really good...very 3-D like it was performance art or something. It also turned out to be Sketch Tuesday as well. Hey, can anybody sit down and doodle? My turn! My turn! I guess if I'm looking for a miniature portrait of a buxom comic superhero, I know where to look. Wow, who knew I could recite entire N'Sync and Backstreet Boys songs. I really wish I hadn't known that these songs were tucked somewhere in the deep dark recesses of my mind. Too late now. But it's 111 Minna's (and Angela's) fault really that I even had the opportunity to find this out. Spice girls too? Seriously? WTF is wrong with me. And yes, evidently I DO live La Vida Loca should anyone be curious. This fly little gallery had a 90s party which brought out all these deep dark pop memories I'd long forgotten. I'm scared. Someone hold me. But what was I expecting at a 90s party? And as much as it's hard to admit... I was straight rockin' out to most of those songs. There is photo proof somewhere which should be destroyed. But the place knows how to throw a good party fo sho. Awesome 90's video montage with everything from Friends and Fresh Prince intros to Madonna and the good ol' OJ Simpson white Bronco chase. Themed parties can be hit or miss for me, and while the night started off quiet all of a sudden I was drunk, feeling my inner PM Dawn, and dancing with everyone in a sea of people. Oh yea, there's art here too, whoops. I think it was pretty rad stuff, but I should probably be back when I'm not so focused on my N'Sync lyrics. Always heard about the good music being played at various events at Minna. It just so happened we were in the City to see the Niners play one Sunday in late October and my good friend DJ JeffCee booked a gig at Minna. It was an event that had a purpose of not just getting everyone together for a Saturday night of good music and libations but it also went to a good cause. It benefitted the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and more specifically held in honor of Stephine San Juan who was a survivor. There was a photo booth, raffle for prizes and they were taking donations for L&LS. We had a good time and the music the DJ JeffCee played was well received by the attendees and the staff. He had the closing set so the bar staff was cleaning up towards the end and they said for him to come back "anytime" as they enjoyed everything from his classic hip hop set to his Motown favorites and breaks. They were all super cool and we were glad they were digging the music. Only one side was dedicated to this party as the other side of Minna was a private birthday party celebration. If I remember correctly, the hallway where the restrooms are located are shared between the 2 spaces. Looking forward to going back to Minna. Hope they invite DJ JeffCee back to spin on another night. It'll give us a good excuse to be back in the city. For me to be home... read more

Yep, this place does it for me. 90s night spinning all of my favorite songs all night?! Hell yea. For a $5 cover it was worth it. Drinks are reasonable and strong. Dance floor is big enough to where you can dance without having to booty bump another group. Later on in the night they also open the other half of the gallery to another dance room/DJ. this is one of the very first restaurants that process the famous chef I should say Michael Mina had opened and I went with my parents and my grandmother several times while I lived in San Francisco and the food is to die for absolutely spectacular very well prepared everything looks pretty good enough size servings and very nice staff. 111 Minna was one of the first downtown night spots that I went to - when I first moved to the city. I have to admit that many of my first experiences here were just kinda meh. The crowd just wasn't really my kind of crowd.The music just wasn't my kind of music. The lights were a little too bright. It just wasn't me. But I've come to learn that a venue is more than 1 or 2 similar events which they may host. To really appreciate a venue you have to see it in a variety of different contexts (that being said I'm fully aware that first impressions are often a space's first shot with most). I'm glad that I've been able to see 111 Minna's potential and capability as an event space, through a plethora of different events now; including everything from Spark's Blissful Sugary fundraiser to the SFIAAFF launch party. I was particularly impressed by 111 Minna as a event space when I attended the Suite Jesus event here this past Friday. It was my kind of scene. My kind of music. And though the lights were still a little too bright (which did allow you to see the art though) - it felt right. What makes 111 Minna such a unique and great space: is their size, their gallery potential, their ability to host different music in their partitioned off areas, their accessible location, their bathroom layout, their free water stations, and their staff. 1.) In terms of space - 111 Minna is down to host a large amount of people pretty effortlessly, while still allowing people to breathe and move around. 2.) As far as their gallery - it's constantly rotating with unique art pieces. Some of the art is hit or miss depending on the event coming in, but it's always worth checking out, regardless. 3.) Their split space is impressive and innovative, and allows for those using the space to do so creatively. The sound system is great - and you can easily have two sets of head thumping, rump shaking music going on in the different spaces; without the sounds clashing. Their two bars also help divide up the pushy bar traffic. 4.) Their location is just so on point. Being able to walk to the N Owl/MUNI/BART late at night - is just plain choice. That is all. 5.) Bathroom layout - I love that there's a separate hallway for the bathrooms - where you can leave one party scene - and emerge out into a separate party scene through another door. 6.) Free water stations - especially when I don't have to ask for it - is always appreciated. 7.) Staff. I don't know the staff all too well here, but those that I've met have been laid-back, genuine, fun, and just nice people. Since I first came here (prob all the way back in 2005) the staff doesn't seem to have rotated too much as well, which is always a good sign about a place. I'm sure there are plenty of events that go on at 111 Minna - which may not be your scene. Might even be far from it. But as far as an event venue goes - 111 Minna brings it. They have all of the important elements to make a successful event come into fruition. I just vote for more dimmed lighting - and more reggae dance events. Trust. read more

High celings. People in business attire. Art. *Yawn*. Most of the loungey bars (bar-y lounges?) in SOMA are pretty much all the same to me. I don't completely dislike them, but in general there's nothing that really sets a certain one apart from the rest. They are basically interchangeable and boring. 111 Minna (or simply "Minna," as all the cool kids refer to it) is still nothing special, but in recent memory it's won points for hosting a relatively cheap, relatively fun NYE party (a $20 presale ticket bought me a typical night in SOMA + free champagne and kisses at midnight), the huge and awesome Lincbama poster that seems semi-permanent (see http://static.px.yelp.com/photo/2YkBt6xOIY7XKUSJXZeDIQ/l , http://static.px.yelp.com/photo/vbX9KSQMiVywCG4ZjIBO2Q/l), AND, my most recent discovery: $2 PBR on Friday nights! The crowd is usually pretty diverse, but people tend to stay within their cliques. Which is why I'd only suggest coming to this place if it's for a specific event thrown by people you know, UNLESS the event happens to be their Wednesday night Qool party, which I've only been to it once, but once was enough to learn that it's one of those incestuous scenes of regulars who've all slept with each other at one point. read more

A little bit of a hidden gem in FiDi for post-work happy hour gatherings! I've gone here during the day when it was the Red Door Cafe for some morning caffeine, but it never occurred to me to stop by after work for a different type of pick-me-up. When a coworker organized a casual happy hour here, I was totally down! Cocktail prices are standard SF costs (~$10-11). My favorite is the MINNA MULE because I love the combo of ginger beer and vodka. It was very refreshing! My coworkers liked the cheap draft beers ($4 only!). The interior is a nice casual, but hip vibe -- lots of art hanging on the walls and you place your drinks on wooden stumps. However, sound does echo a lot and I found it difficult to listen to my coworker talk who was right next to me. It was fairly easy to grab a table and seats for 6 ppl around 4:45/6PM on a Friday night. Things got busier later after 6PM. Attended an art show here, but it got way too crowded. There was more shoving past people than appreciating the art that was displayed. Not sure why they allow every square inch of the space to be maxxed out. The venue itself is kinda meh. The only thing that makes it a great events space is the art hanging around. The staff (bartenders and bouncers) are okay. Not people people, just there to do their jobs. I hate the way the bars are built, like the stupid column that blocks more people from standing at the bar. Sometimes I'm not sure if this is a club or an art gallery. I've seen some cool stuff happening here while I'm chilling in the Red Door Cafe. Definitely best for a small VIP reception or event where 100 people are not crammed into a room, even if it's for a good cause. Joined my friend who goes to Body Mechanics for their gym party and was pretty impressed. They rented out the gallery with a fully stocked bar, food and live music. There are 2 bars, one in the main gallery where the DJ sets up and the second in the back where there is also a stage for live music. I would have loved to see more art but know for events it all has to get moved out. However the wall pieces were quite lovely and I would want to come back to check out the art during the day. It's a great space for a smaller events, this event I believe was comprised of members and trainers from 3 of their gym locations. Here I learned a new reason to work out... The French 75 cocktail! I like the idea of coffee shop + drinks bar + gallery + meeting place. All the tables are made of nicely designed wood and the art displayed is always super attractive. There are many tables and couches that are available for reservations, but you just have to call or email them ahead of time....and the best part is that there is no minimum spend! You can also get one of the better Moscow mules in the area, served properly in a copper mug. I go here every so often to get coffee in the morning when I don't feel like making it in my office. Each time it is great and exciting to visit. I usually get a hot regular coffee or a cold brew coffee, each time tasting good! There is sometimes a long line, but usually because of the typical morning coffee run. Longest I have had to wait is 5 minutes or less. The thing I always am intrigued by is what paintings and artwork will be up. Each time I tend to go they have changed the art and I always take a few minutes to examine each painting with my coffee in hand. I have also gone here for happy hour a few times after work and they have great deals on beers. It tends to get really bust around 5 or 5:30 though, so keep that in mind. I love 90's pop night! It's an art gallery turned swanky club on Fridays and Saturdays. Don't forget to check the website to see what music is being played and who is the DJ because sometimes they have really unique music nights and private parties This place has a lot of perks: 2 blocks from the montgomery bart station, two dance floors, two bars, and bartenders who do more than the two second pour. I've always had to pay cover here, ($10-$20 depending on the night) but I've been happy to do so each time because I've had so much fun. I'm knocking it down a star because the floors do get really slippery and the staff doesn't do the best job to keep it dry - can't say I haven't fallen on my butt here once or twice....ouch, but overall I'd come here again and again... 111 Minna Gallery is a great space for parties and events. It hosts a wide variety of events from art showings (great spot for that!), to tech mixers, to DJ nights and film screenings. It's a spot that get rented out frequently for events, so you never know what they may have going on and I like that. They have 2 rooms, and either one or both can be rented out. The room on the right has a stage and bar where live bands or a DJ can spin, and the room on the left of the entrance tends to be the main bar room and food area. There's always cool art hanging in the space, and they host a great open bar for their private events with great liquor and nice beers like Chimay. I always enjoy this venue and recommend it for renting out for private events as well as the space can be used to many different uses! read more

Went to the SF Weekly Revenge of the Nerds party on Wed 4/7/10. I got there about 6:05pm and the line was around the corner. Had to show ID and get hand stamped. Food inside was just chips & dip and some cinnamon rolls cut up from Cinnaholic. I think there was free booze, didn't get any of it. Vitamin Water was FREE in the big bottles. Had to buy tickets for Kung Fu Tacos. They were $3 for 2 tacos. I got duck taco & bbq pork taco. Duck is better. Very crowded inside so didn't go back in. Art was just ok for me - couldn't really enjoy it w/ the huge crowd. read more

You can not beat the location. It's just a few steps from the Bart station. There was enough room to chat, dance and eat. The temperature was comfortably cool. The drinks were priced extremely well. Towards the end of the evening, they merged another party (a decade younger than us) with ours. It brought a totally different vibe to the place, in a good way. Everyone was having a great time. My only complaint was that some of the staff seemed disconnected. There was one bartender that only seemed to respond to the loud or obnoxious. I am neither of those, so I found it difficult to get a drink. Later in the evening, a different bartender showed up and he was awesome. All in all, it was a super fun night. *********************** REVIEW 445 ************************ I always likes to come to this art gallery, especially like the one RAW: Natural Born Artists Presents monthly event. 111 Minna Gallery is a L-shape venue, high ceiling, wooden floor, 2 small stages, 2 bars, and quite cozy. The gallery always throw awesome events such as the RAW event ones. The bartenders are nice; the well cocktail drinks are only $8, you can't beat that, plus you got to view some of the finest arts from local artists; listening to local live bands, and having a great time with your friends.
