Matt Walsh is an excellent instructor. His students are good training partners for visitors. I attended the Monday fundamentals class followed by the advance class. I learned some new techniques, and I also learned new details on techniques I currently use. His gym is very clean and organized. Everything was great; I just wish he spoke about the real truth on conspiracy theories passed down 10th planet Master Eddie Bravo. Because of that I cannot give a full 10 stars review. You wanna know about 10th Planet Pompano? Yelp needs to invent a zero-star option. No, seriously. There isn't a rational number low enough to quantify how disrespected I've felt here. First off, nobody at this gym rolls at my level. Every time I train, I get submitted. Over and over. It's like they don't understand how good I could be if they just let me win a little. I've been training Jiu Jitsu for over three months, and I still can't pull guard properly. What are they even teaching? I asked the instructor why I haven't gotten my blue belt yet, and he looked me dead in the eye and said, "You deserve a glitter belt for how much you whine." I laughed, assuming he was joking. He wasn't. Next class he actually gave me a glitter belt. Sparkly. Custom made. Said it matched my energy. If you're looking for a gym that hands out belts just for showing up, look elsewhere. The welcome wagon was less "welcome," more "wanna pop knees and smoke trees?" As a staunch believer in knee conservation (they're a limited resource, people!), I politely declined the arboricultural activities. The waiver signing felt less like a formality and more like a Faustian pact, complete with the romantic aroma of a thousand rotten eggs and a sinister cackle that I think was coming from the pen itself after I dotted the 'i'. Before I could even glance at a mat, there was the ceremonial anointing - a full-body baptism in what I can only describe as the collective perspiration of every grappler since the dawn of spandex. It was...intimate. Then, during what I thought was a friendly practice of "moves," I apparently invoked the ancient spirits of WrestleMania by muttering, "This ain't the WWF, pal." Suddenly, I was pretzelled into a shape previously unknown to geometry, and a disembodied voice informed me I owed it a burrito. A carne asada burrito, no less. The audacity! Honestly, the whole thing was a fever dream. I kept looking for the ring, you know, for my big Hulk Hogan leg drop moment, but it was MIA. Maybe it was invisible? Even as a joke I could never leave Matt a bad review. I've known him for a decade. We met at a jiu jitsu camp at 10th Planet Portland. One of the best experiences of my life. Matt is one of the most genuine people I know. He extremely passionate about jiu jitsu, self defense, yoga, and helping people. He comes from a humble background, and to his core he fights for what is just. Matt is a true martial artist and a very talented teacher and practitioner. Poor experience. Very unprofessional management. Go elsewhere. The coach stole money & I'm currently in pursuit with legal action. Just be careful giving your credit card info. Matt charges even when you cancel. Also their website is misleading and says it's only $150/month for a "special" but it's always $150. Also don't pay a sign up fee. Nobody actually charges sign up fee's if you're not willing to pay it. read more

Absolutely unacceptable! I came here expecting a normal jiu jitsu experience, but what I got was something entirely different. Within 10 minute of stepping on the mat, I was involuntarily promoted to purple belt after accidentally tapping out 3 black belts and the janitor. I didn't sign up for this level of responsibility!!! During open mat, I witnessed a guy choke someone out...with his mind. Also, the mats are too comfortable. I took a nap between rolls. It was a gloomy Tuesday night, slightly overcast. The Pompano street lights illuminated my hunting grounds. I had been diligently studying Bushido on youtube for months now, it was time to show my skills to the world. 10th Planet Pompano was chosen as the stage to perform my deadly ninja arts. Upon entering the dojo I was greeted by the sterile smell of cleaning products. This was the first red flag, a real dojo always smells of blood and sweat. Using my ninja senses I immediately analyzed my surroundings. To my surprise, there were no katana's, bow staffs or ninja stars on the walls. "what amateurs" I grumble to myself. From around the corner, a man appeared. He extended his hand to greet me with a smile, only a fool would believe that fake pleasantry. I shook his hand while avoiding eye contact to establish dominance. After signing some scroll, I was put through a hazing ritual. They made me wash my feet before getting on the mat. This wasn't in any of the anime I watched. Although everyone was wearing dumb looking swim suit things, I had my dragon slayer kimono equipped. After pointless warming up (a tiger never stretches to hunt, neither do I) we began practice. Everything they showed was completely wrong, I was too tired and the techniques were too difficult making them useless. After 15 minutes I said I had to use the bathroom and left. Everyone there was terrified of me, I won't be going back in order to save them from being scared. read more

1-Star: "Discrimination Against the Fungi Community" I came here to train hard, sweat buckets, and maybe leave with a couple new skin conditions not to be judged for the ones I already had. Day one: I roll in ready to grind, rocking my lucky rash guard (unwashed since 2023, for good luck), and the coach hits me with, "Uh, you can't train if you have ringworm or staph." Excuse me? First off, ever heard of natural selection? If my training partners can't survive a little microbial adversity, should they even be here? Secondly, I named my ringworm. Carl. He's part of me now. You're kicking out family. Coach said it was a "health and safety issue," but I'm pretty sure it was just thinly veiled skin-shaming. One guy literally had a mullet and a Monster Energy tattoo and HE got to train. Where's the line? Anyway, I'm now training in the parking lot with a traffic cone and Carl. We're getting stronger every day. Would leave zero stars if possible. read more

Weirdest karate dojo I've ever seen. I keep getting yelled at if I punch or kick anyone and the sensei (the call him coach?! Lame) keeps making me start on the ground. I started Jiu Jitsu to beat ass and meet chicks. Two weeks into this dojo and I have been repeatedly dominated by everyone and I'm still a virgin. In my last class a white belt choked me and I pissed all over the mat. It wasn't even that much but the sensei told me to scram. The mat is made of rubber so the piss doesn't even soak in! Amazing place to train, I've been to some other BJJ gyms in the area and none can compare to 10th Planet Pompano. Coach Matt provides excellent instruction and the methods taught here are very effective for both competition and self-defense. The schedule is very well laid out so it should be easy for anyone to attend one or multiple classes daily, lots of time can be spent on the mats learning BJJ as well as wrestling and Judo techniques. The entire gym is always spotless and the mats are very high-quality. Value is also excellent being more affordable than traditional bjj gyms, discounts are given for signing up for multiple months which is a big plus. read more

He's just a really clear instructor with an excellent jiu jitsu game - he tightened up a number of things for me that have made an impact on mine as well. My girlfriend and I were passing through to Miami and wanted to train on our way. We popped into 10th Planet Pompano Beach and the students as well as the instructor, Matt Walsh, made us feel very welcome! Matt is great person who is very warm, personable, a legitimate black belt, and a very funny guy. He taught a wonderful class that focused on gaining positional advantage (sweeps, guard passing, and top control) but we worked submissions as well. I would definitely recommend people to come on down to check them out, they were kind to newer and more experienced practitioners.
