They swapped my order with a younger vintage and failed to mention it. No email. No, "We substituted this because we're out of stock--is that okay?" They quietly swapped it, hoping I wouldn't notice or wouldn't care. But I was buying a Rioja, not a Walmart box wine. I discovered the switch, had to leave my car, grab a shopping cart, go back inside, and find someone to help. That's when the tap dance began. The first employee pretended that vintages didn't matter. He called in the self-proclaimed expert, who introduced himself with, "I'm the wine guy. What's the problem?" As it turns out, the problem was standing right in front of me. Rather than acknowledge that substituting a vintage without informing the customer might be an issue, he spent several minutes explaining why it shouldn't matter. Eventually he landed on, "It's just a $30 bottle of wine." Actually, it was a case. Twelve bottles--$360 of wine. He asserted the two wines were equally rated when they were not. A review from home revealed the younger substitute averaged a full point lower rating (WA, WS, JD, WE, TA). As I explained that vintage and ratings represent value, he interrupted. When I politely asked not to be interrupted, he rolled his eyes, looked away, and said it was time to find a manager. Manager David was as helpful as helpful as a light bulb without electricity. He asked what the problem was. I went through the list, concluding that if he wanted to sell a younger wine with a questionable rating he should have said so and provided some kind of discount. He seemed remarkably uninterested in discussing wine ratings, vintages and economics, so I asked for a refund. That took another ten minutes on top of the twenty I had already wasted. As I left, he offered a casual, "Sorry about that," delivered with all the sincerity of an automated voicemail. Total Wine in Encinitas may be convenient, but pricing is marginal, wine knowledge questionable, and customer service was lacking. One email was 6/9, another 6/11, a voicemail on 6/12, and the second one today, 6/15. My app is showing two charges, which will now have to be disputed since we clearly aren't getting our product that was ordered. I get not replying to emails in a timely manner, but also not returning calls is just bad business, as my order was for a company invite for an annual trip. Will be taking our business elsewhere since they clearly do not communicate, nor ship out what gets ordered.

They are on top of it with the customer service to, as they made sure I got everything sorted correctly. I definitely recommend them and will continue to recommend them. They are even as thoughtful as to wait until the beginning of the week to ship so that days aren't wasted in a UPS/FedEx/DHL truck on weekends. They are a very small business and I think they have a lot of orders, as it took two days to get back to me, but that's not a complaint, just real life. A friend recommend me this company to buy some Vérité wines, I send them an email around 10PM their…read moretime and to my surprise I got a reply in less than one hour. From that moment I exchanged about 5-6 emails with Garrick Whittaker with different questions I had and adding/removing wines. I did a Yelp and Google search to find out they didn't have any reviews yet, to which Garrick explained that previously they were operating at the same location under a different name. So it all seems like they have been in the wine-trade business for around 20 years and they know what they are doing. From the start I felt that Garrick took my inquiries seriously and put the time to answer every question. I can tell you they are amount the lowest price in almost every wine they carry, and they are definitely in the top tear quality wise! When I had built my order of 20 bottles I had to remove a few since it was some discrepancies in what I was expecting to pay and the final price, in part because I wanted to pay via CC to add a layer of protection since after all it's the very first time ordering... The last step was to give a call to Logan Wynn to provide with the CC#, while on the phone I asked him another couple of questions and I got straightforward responses. In about 2 more hours my boxes were in FedEx possession and I got an email with tracking information from Jeremy Runkle. This morning I received all 13 bottles in a magnificent well protected fashion, with some ice packs to help with the Florida heat. Upon inspection all were in prestige conditions except one bottle of 2004 Vérité La Muse that had a slightly elevated cork. To me this is a very big deal because it's likely that bottle was subject to excessive heat at some point in time, I'm sure it was not on the way here because they all arrived in great shape and perfectly packaged, that must have been when they acquired the wine, who knows. At the end I'm happy with the overall experience, I interacted with 3 people and they all did they parts, it feels like they are a good team and I hope we can keep on doing business in the future... This Total Wine visit was a means to an end, to be honest. I visited strictly for two reasons: One, to procure bourbon that can't be found in the Midwest. And two, to grab a bottle of red wine that has a twist-off cap that I could take back to my hotel room. I'm happy to say that both missions were accomplished! This Total Wine is like many of the other Total Wine stores: It's very organized and neat, with helpful people all about. That's one of the things that I love about Total Wine: There are people here and there in the aisles, ready to help. The other thing that I love about Total Wine is that it's so super organized, so you can just pop into a store and find what you want. That was the case for me, and I was in and out very quickly. Sometimes, you want to wander and browse. And other times, you just want to go in and get what you want. I got a bottle of red wine, and it was delicious. What more can you want?
