Got some strip mall Chinese food in Oak Forest. It has a few tables inside if you really want to eat here. #1 Chop Suey is mostly to go orders. A lot of questionable tactics going on around. The prices are all wrong and always higher than they have listed. Crappy looking strip mall with this being on a side where it's actually hidden. It's almost as if they're trying to not let people find it. That may actually not be that bad of an idea for some restaurants. Actually it's better than expected. The food is okay but the prices suck. It's about $13 for an entree. We got the Kung Pao Tofu. It came in to go containers. On a tray. Bush league. We put the rice on the paper plates then put the entrees on top. A good thing was the flavor. There was quite a spiciness. Having a crappy way of presenting meals can ruin many restaurants but this one is still around if you can believe it. It's closed Mondays. They have a crappy interior but most customers get takeout so whatever. read more

YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR I have ordered food from this establishment in the past. It was a little expensive for what it was but the food was excellent so I had no real complaints. This experience was very different. The food was very average and the prices were relatively inexpensive.. One wonders if it was sold to new owners or if they gave up. The lobby/dining room was nothing special. There were a few diner tables, one of which was covered with business paperwork. It seemed like it was take out only. The kitchen was very cluttered. I couldn't imagine how they were able to cook and keep any standards. Not surprising that the food had suffered. As stated earlier the food was just okay. When asked they would not substitute fried rice for the accompanying white rice. I had to pay for it as a completely separate item. Been going here for 20 years. They changed owners 5 months ago, and the food is just not good anymore. The egg rolls went from being the best anywhere around to being less than mediocre. its like flavorless cabbage. No peanut taste, no chicken? The beef fried rice is also just not up to par. Pretty blah!!! I called them to give them my feedback as a long time customer, and they said although they've received a lot of complaints it has changed their sales. Well, there you have it . . . guess it's time to stop going there and quit trying to pretend it will somehow taste like it used to. They won't get my sale ever again. Very friendly staff. Tonight was our first time coming here. I ordered the sesame chicken lunch special with fried rice and a crab ragoon. They prepare their sesame chicken way different than every single Chinese restaurant I have ever been to. Although it wasn't exactly what I wanted, it was delicious. I love the Chinese vegetables that they use. Everything tasted so fresh, and the fried rice was outstanding. My fiancé had Mongolian beef, he said it was also very good. We will definitely be back. Awful! We ordered dinner for my family and drove 30 minutes to pick it up. This has always been our absolute favorite place to get Chinese and have been ordering for over 20 years. When family comes in from out of town, we always make a stop here. When we lived in Oak Forest, we ordered every Friday night. Our order tonight included General Tsao's and always get extra chicken. It has never been tossed in the sauce, and the chicken has always been delish. Not anymore. The chicken was covered in sauce and soggy. The egg rolls are also very different. Under this new ownership the food is gross. We won't be going back. So sad since we are long time customers. read more

We've been getting our Chinese from them for 25 years. They had the BEST eggrolls you could ever put in your mouth. We get our order tonight and suddenly I felt like we went to Panda Express. The egg rolls were just cabbage and the general Tso chicken was mixed in the sauce (now with dark meat). All the food has changed from what we've enjoyed in the past. I called and asked what happened and was told there were new owners. They need to change their name to "Number 2 Chop Suey" because they're not #1 anymore. Good serviceable Chinese food in a nice little storefront setting. While there are five McDonalds-like tables with four seats each in the restaurant, this place really isn't set up for dine-in...there is nothing on the tables and they serve your dine-in order in the to-go containers with little flimsy plastic forks...and the little portion-pak sweet-and-sour sauces. This is really just a carry-out place. That said, the food was nicely prepared - hot and fresh. We had the chicken fried rice (very nice with nice size pieces of chicken)...beef chop suey (also nice with good chunks of beef)...and the egg rolls (slightly sweet with just the slightest hint of jasmine). I have lived in OF for over 30 yrs. Number 1 Chop Suey used to have great egg rolls and good prices. Today I ordered the General Tso's chicken. It was in a thick sweet and sour sauce with a mushy tomato, green pepper and chunks of pineapple. The chicken was not crispy, but was encased in a gummy flour "dumpling". Inedible and lunch cost me over $12. I called for a refund and was denied, since "that's the way we make it." Poor quality, high prices, and rude and unaccommodating staff. I belong to a private group on Facebook and based on the reviews from that group along with yelpers and google I decided to give this place a try. I have to say the egg rolls was good (surprisingly) usually most chinese restaurants don't make fresh egg rolls- these were good! I ordered a lunch special that came with chicken broccoli shrimp and pork, white rice and an egg roll. Not bad for 12 bucks! I asked for only shrimp and chicken and the order taker said that wasn't a problem! My meal was tasty and I was Satisfied. My husband had me orde a small shrimp fried rice and an order of egg rolls for him. He devoured his meal- he was quiet and all I heard was nom, nom, nom lol. If I order them veg, they arrive loaded with meaty and greasy as in I-just-got-dipped-in-Crisco-how's-it-going greasy. Yuck. Tried a few local places, but nothing lit my fire. And then, I found #1. Hot, fresh, fast, and reasonably priced. I have a LOAD of ridiculous requests between my very-vegetarian paranoia and my three year old's uber picky nature and they are awesomely adaptable. This place is awesome! We order from here once or twice a month and have never been dissatisfied! Not to sound like a jerk, but one of the best things about this place is that they employ a native speaker as a cashier and phone jockey. Unlike other places, when you call, you don't have to spend half the time trying to figure out what the person is saying because of their thick Chinese accent. The food is phenomenal, too. I've tried about 15 different things on the menu and it's been perfect every time! Thus far, my favorites are the "sweet & sours" and the "Lo Meins." My wife is a huge fan of their crab rangoon (very creamy!), I love the shrimp toast, and we both can't get enough of the pot stickers! The only suggestions I could offer to this place have nothing to do with the food. First, they could use a more visible location! Second, they should start a delivery service. There've been a few times where we've wanted Chinese and ordered from somewhere else simply because it was too much of a pain to go out and get it (bad weather, company was over, didn't want to have to load the kids in the car, etc.). If you're looking for great Chinese in Oak Forest or the surrounding areas, look no further because it's just north of 159th on Central in the east strip mall!! And to the owners... Great food! The crab Rangoon and egg rolls were excellent, the beef was tender and tasty. The shrimp was incredible, cooked perfectly which many restaurants can never master. The owners know my face when I walk in as I have frequented #1 to pick up order for my family or myself for years now. We for some reason prefers appetizers to actual dishes. The point is that #1 is genuinely the *best* OFo has in Chinese cuisine, it is reasonably priced and the service is fantastic. It's like the Chinese version of Cheers because if you go there enough they *will* know your name. The down-side right now is it's location though I certainly don't think it's impacting their business. Next door to #1 is an empty space of what used to be a Hollywood Video (oh HV, how I miss the days I'd order Chinese, go rent a movie and pick up my hot food on my way back to the car). Another bit of sad news is that they don't deliver because if they did I'd be ordering a whole lot more from them on a regular basis. I have been a regular customer since 1998 when it was located in the Riverview Shopping Center. Since 2012, I have traveled 65 MILES ONE-WAY to get take out, sometimes buying 2 orders, of 2 large dishes each, to also treat a friend with one of the orders. (FYI: I'll drive 525 miles one way for ribs at Central BBQ and to Texas to get In N Out Burgers.) I have NEVER complained to #1 Chop Suey until today, even when mushrooms are still in my "NO mushroom" order. I specifically repeated myself at least 4 times "No plastic spoons or forks", trying to save them costs and reduce unnecessary waste. VIOLA, there's the plastic forks in the bag! ( I started a community recycling program in 1971.) I unpacked the plastic bag, for 2 large dishes, only to find that I did NOT get all of my items. The manager said that an employee was new. I said that is not my problem; my order should be right. He asked what I wanted him to do, instead of telling me what he was going to do? When it became obvious that the manager planned to do NOTHING, I replied "what I will do is call my credit card company and will drop off this incomplete order next week AND will NEVER RETURN!" Well I just ate at this place. I purchased chicken egg food young there were only 2small chunks of chicken, made with dark brown gravy that was very bitter. A small order cost just under 6bucks, I was told I couldn't use a credit card unless I pay an extra 50. because my order was under 10.00, so I ordered egg rolls to make it 10.00. I said this was against the law, so the cashier said, he knew that, what arrogance. I used to absolutely love Number 1 Chop Suey, I wouldn't get Chinese food from anywhere else. But recently their food has just not lived up to the quality of what is used to be. My husband on multiple occasions has complained about how gross the orange chicken was and I've been completely disappointed by their fried rice and the pan fried noodles. I wish they could figure out what they started doing differently, whether that is different ingredients or different cooking methods. I would love if they could go back to producing fantastic Chinese food like they did a few years back. That said, I have always been pleased with their staff members and the cleanliness of the store.
