My love for Cantonese BBQ (燒味) knows no bounds and my self-led goose chase lead me to 1+1燒鵝 (Siu Ngor), a local spot known for roast goose. Wanchai's reputation as a goose'y neighborhood has lived up to its reputation and 1+1 is deserving of its destination status.
Even during the peak of lunch hours, the crowds weren't significant. Table sharing (搭枱) is a reality but that comes with the territory of places as small as this. There are a handful of tables for groups of 4, but that's it. The fabulous aroma from the nearby chopping stand is the real draw, and I wasted no time with my waitress and ordered a 3 meat plate with a iced lemon tea.
The combo plate 三寶飯 had a slab of roasted siu yuk pork, char siu bbq pork, and roasted goose (燒肉叉燒燒鵝) over a bed of rice. It was steaming hot and paired perfectly with a little soy, mustard for the pork, and a sweet glaze to combat the fatty oils of the goose. Every bite was delightful, perfectly meaty, and an excellent combination of textures. The char siu was wonderfully fatty with a bit of crisp from the charred bits. Siu yuk had a nice crunch from the skin and the flavors were on point. The goose was the star of the show, with chunky bits of meat, and fabulous finish. I'm still thinking about how delicious it all was.
The food was served quickly, portions were on point, and the prices were more affordable than other goose destinations. Cantonese is preferred with the staff, but the menu has both English and Chinese. read more
