One of my go-to favorites for lunch on/near campus. Big fan of the curry fried rice and the popcorn chicken. The popcorn chicken is pretty damn good. I do wish they'd offer different levels of spice for it (for those that need fried chicken spicy, for example). They're all very nice people. The boba tea is pretty impressive: I had no idea there were so many different kinds of bobas! The only issue is that there's not much of a place to sit. I love getting boba here when I'm in town. The price is amazing and affordable, especially for a large size! They have many flavors to choose from and they're all really great. Their wait time after ordering is usually quick, so you can immediately enjoy your beverage. It is very small inside, but I would suggest ordering take out if you have a party larger than 4. There are a few tables and high top seating. Lots of bubble tea options and toppings, plus they have egg pudding as topping. We found this place by taking a wrong turn and it was the best mistake of our whole trip. What a find! My girls love bubble tea and it isn't always easy to find so we decided to go in for drinks and a snack. We all got bubble teas and a variety of apps and food to share. We were blown away by the food. Beyond beyond what we were expecting. The wings looked Spicy but were sweet and sticky and savory with some kind of crunch garlic on top for bursts of flavor and texture. My 9 year old who is the pickiest eater ever demolished them. The Taiwan popcorn chicken was another head trip. It was crunchy but not in the way it looked. Somehow crunch and soft at the same time. And it had no sauce but somehow it had amazing flavors of lemongrass and ginger. Have you ever had fried chicken that is refreshing? It was a mind trip. The experience was great. I absolutely love this place! I not only go for the delicious food and tea, but I love seeing the owner, Fanny as well. She greets her customers like she's known them forever and makes you feel so welcomed. The Malaysian stir-fried noodles is my favorite dish to get here. It's flavored with yellow curry and has fatty pork, juicy shrimp, onions, and gets a nice crunch from the bean sprouts and yellow onions. It truly resembles Vietnamese banh xeo which is a take on a savory crepe. I love this dish so much and would recommend it to everyone to try! The braised beef noodle soup is a great comfort food on a cold day. With tender beef that falls off the bone, chewy egg noodles, and a strong beef broth... you can't go wrong. Not pictured, but I usually get either popcorn chicken or crab rangoons with my tea as a snack and they are both so addictive! The crab rangoons are so packed with filing and the popcorn chicken is a great salty pairing for the sweet teas! I would recommend trying any milk tea, especially the signature, oolong, and hazelnut. I would also recommend trying their cheesecake tea creation! It taste like an actual strawberry cheesecake. But for those timid to try tea, their smoothies are also great and tastes like there could be ice cream inside. read more

I used to go to TJ cups often for my tea. When I heard that TJ cups team is back as 1+1, I had to try it. I'm glad that it is the same if not better, with the addition of food. It is a deceptively small restaurant offering good tea and good food. The staff is friendly, and the service is reasonably fast. I love tea and this place does have perfectly brewed tea. Their bubble teas are great, but I usually go for the milk tea (hot, ask them not to add any toppings), which reminds me of the Chai (sans the spices). There is a decent variety of tea, I recommend Oolong (for bubble tea) and their signature tea (for milk tea). For a small restaurant, they have a surprisingly large menu. I am yet to try most of their dishes, so far have only tried Napa Cabbage, spicy cabbage, and fried rice. Both of them were good and you can feel the freshness. I think the food here is flavorful but mildly spicy, though I understand that what constitutes of spicy is subjective. With the location being close to campus, it makes a good place to grab lunch and delicious tea. read more

Of course, I left my phone in the car so I don't have any pictures... But this is, hands down, some of the best Chinese/Mandarin food I've had in Ames! We tried the lo mein, Kung Pao beef, beef with scrambled eggs over rice (risotto on the menu), chicken and broccoli and pork fried rice. It was all delicious -- the Kung Pao was actually spicy, and it was all very lean and free of gristle! The risotto was so flavorful that my 3 yr old commandeered my plate after a while and finished it off. While we went for the food, we were convinced to try some of the teas as well. I am now a new fan of the Signature Bubble, which is a black, milk tea, and my husband tried one of the honey teas, hot, and my kids even got something that resembled chocolate soy milk. All very nice additions to the meal. Finally (maybe I should have started with this), the biggest reason I will be returning soon (and I will definitely be returning) was the hospitality. Even though there was not a lot of sitting area, the staff was very accommodating both in describing the menu items and accommodating my small children. They were polite and friendly, they shared a little bit of the history on some of the meals and how they ended up on the menu, and they even scrummaged up a couple packages of cookies for the kids to take with them when we left. I didn't even make it to 10pm last night before breaking into my leftovers. The only reason we had any is because we ordered so many things to try! Please add this to your list of must go to his next time you're in Ames. If you live nearby, maybe order takeout on each Street or GrubHub. read more

This is my favorite little restaurant! I live 30 seconds walk away and I walk past it every day on my way to my classes. 1+1 consistently has the kindest staff. The food was a little pricey, but overall very good. I'd recommend the fried egg noodles. They had a slightly nutty flavor with minimal oil, which I really like when it comes to Asian food. The tea was very good, too, being just the right amount of sweetness and pearls. The staff were very friendly. Service was slightly slow but I'll give them grace because we had a large order and it was pretty busy. I would recommend this for single diners or diners for two people. Bubble tea was great, and I discovered they had a surprisingly diverse menu for such a tiny hole in the wall! We ordered takeout the next day - shrimp fried rice, spicy Hunan pork, and chicken wings. The fried rice was good, the chicken wings were really good, and the Hunan pork was great. Friendly, fast service, and generous portions. Super happy to have another good restaurant in West Ames. i had never been to 1+1 before. i'm not a fan of milk tea or bubble tea so it never peaked my interest. however, on this fine january afternoon, i decided to stop in with a couple friends. i was pleasantly surprised! they have a large menu of drinks and food items. i ordered a chocolate banana smoothie which tastes like it was made with either ice or frozen bananas [it doesn't have a creamy texture like it would if it was made with yogurt or milk. i really like it!] to go with my smoothie, i ordered crab rangoons [4 for $5] they were pretty tasty. they had lots of flavor, crispy edges and fresh out of the fryer. would definitely recommend them and i will for sure grab them again! the inside of the restaurant is quite small and there is limited seating. it looks like the coveted seats are the two tables in front of the windows. they are great for sitting with a couple of friends. other than that, there are bar top tables with outlets to change devices while you eat. this was a nice stop on my day and i will be sure to go again! read more
