Selection may be limited as the day goes on. Most places where the Ass Bar gets their goodies trash their perfectly edible food. It was the immature part of me that wanted to go here to snap a pic with the name. Lols I went on a Monday around 2pm. I don't know if it was just a bad day or time but there wasn't much left to choose from. My almond pastry was dry but the almond paste inside was pretty good. I know they buy leftovers from other sellers and sell it as day old pastries the next day for cheap (I paid $1) which is great! Prevent food waste! But mine tasted old and not in a good way. I absolutely love the concept and vision behind this place. And not going to lie... the name is pretty funny if you don't know what it means. From the sounds of it, they sell leftover products from local bakeries at a steep discount (about 50% off). It looked like they had tons of options for bread and pastries, but I went with a salad. The salad tasted great and wasn't at all soggy. Great food, great prices, great mission - always a fan of sustainability! I wish they would bring this concept back to the US. I'm a fan! read more

Despite the mix up, I really enjoyed the apricot. I passed on the coffee because it was just a serve yourself machine which doesn't entice me. We felt a bit rushed. Chocolate and marzipan filled croissants for $1.50. Fruit tarts for $2.50. Coffee for $3.00. Am I the right country? A couple days later, my local Swiss friends tell me that Äss Bar sells day old pastries, which is why they are so cheap. We couldn't pass up a place called Ass Bar lol and really glad we didn't! Waste not, want more- it's a small bakery shop with sandwiches and bakery items that are a day old. It certainly didn't taste like it. Had a sandwich (pastrami)and 2 pastries ( one was a jelly filled donut and the other looked like a Thanksgiving cornucopia filled with coconut cream)and would have gone back for more- it was awesome. Found this gem through yelp and boy are we glad we found it. Zurich is a pricey city, and going here for our breakfast was great way to save a little money, but still eat fantastic food. The food is one day old, but that didn't bother us. I had a chocolate stuffed croissant and my husband had a salami sandwich. With a name like Ass Bar, you might be wondering what kind of "services" you will be receiving. However, looking through the window you'll see that instead of a nice slapable bubble booty, you can get buns in the form of bread and other pastries. BUT, there's a twist! Before I explain, I'll tell you what I had... Chicken Curry Toast Fried Ball Thingy? Roast Beef Sandwich Everything above cost me 6.50 CHF causing my brows to rise in astonishment... 6.50 is what I would pay to use a toilet in Zurich - so how is this possible? Some things are better unsaid so I hastily paid and scurried my ass out of there! I merrily skipped home dreaming about fresh pastries, that were basically free, and hurried upstairs to take some photos for Yelp. After the photoshoot, I quickly shoved the chicken curry toast in my mouth in hopes to stop the grumbling and griping from my already hungry stomach. Nom nom nom.... Nom? Hmmm... it's ok but a little on the stale side... Next I popped that fried ball into my mouth and a couple of bites later.... ??? Hmmmmmmmmmm.... This also is slightly stale....... It's their motto and had I been able to read German, I would have realized this from the sign outside. These guys are taking a green step forward to reduce daily waste from nearby bakeries to serve previous day goodies at a fraction of the price. Awwwwwwww cute!! Great concept. So this a day old shop. They go to all the pastry shops in the area and collect and aggregate very nice selection of day old pasties. It seems to go with the Swiss ethos of eliminating waste and recycling whenever possible. Among the four of us we sampled 5-6 pasties with everyone really satisfied. And the prices are very very modest which is a much appreciated change as Switzerland can be a little on the speedy side. read more

Thanks to Dennis M's post I knew what this shop was about. Today I got a hazelnut croissant and a sandwich with ham, hard boiled egg, and pickles for CHF 4.50. Cheap, tasty and filling. This is a good alternative if you're budget dictates cooking yourself, but you don't have a kitchen. Like Dennis M was saying, the bread might be a bit dry. My ham had a small iridescent portion. Tip: CASH ONLY This was the only downside of an otherwise wonderful bakery that has a decent selection at low prices for the old town area. My friends and I had pastries ranging from 1-1.50chf each, which is remarkably cheap when their competition averages 3.50chf. We had their jelly donuts and almond croissant. While the almond croissant wasn't life changing, it does satisfy the pastry craving - texture was the right amount of fluffy and chew. My friends loved the jelly donuts, though! When the bf and I arrived in Zurich a few weekends ago, we quickly learned how expensive the city was going to be, so I immediately started looking up cheap places to grab a bite to eat at. After seeing this establishment's eyebrow raising name as well as its accompanying high rating, we knew we had to swing on by here. Once we arrived, we quickly learned that everything was so cheap because they serve day old sandwiches and pastries. There's also no place to really sit and eat your food at, so that probably also keeps down the overhead costs of the establishment. I really liked that such a place like this exists, though I'm not so sure that it would fly in NYC. Nevertheless, it was a unique concept and hey, our sandwiches were fine. I know zurich has many water fountains but I appreciated here the cafe also had free water tap which I could fill up my water bottle. I totally love the idea of this store! Since I'm not a big fan of throwing food away, I'm thrilled to see people actually doing something against it. This store sells bread, sandwiches, pastries and more that was freshly made yesterday. They get the food first thing in the morning from 9 different bakeries and then offer it in their store for half the price! If you're wondering where I know this from, it's because the owner told us so and was very talkative and friendly while we ordered our lunch. It's a great place to eat when your low on cash because since everything's so cheap, you can buy as many variations and desserts as you want. I would definitely recommend this place, although with certain pastries you notice that the dough isn't as fresh anymore (nevertheless it's still delicious). read more

This is the best option for cheap eats in Zürich's old town. I got two baguette sandwiches and a cup of Nespresso coffee for 11 CHF! The Nespresso coffee was 3 CHF a pop; I could choose between espresso or regular. The two sandwich options I got was tuna and beef (CHF 3.50) as well as pulled beef (CHF 4.50). Both were okay, and true to previous reviews, the bread did taste slightly stale (but that can be solved with a few seconds of microwaving). I found the pulled beef sandwich slightly tastier because it had a good amount of meat that was flavorful and had the right texture. The light amount of mild mustard was also very complementary to the pulled beef. read more

Travelling around Europe with my two friends we knew Switzerland was going to be the most expensive place to stay (Even though we were staying with a friend). Really cheap baked goods. The store itself is recessed from the street and nested in between two other stores, so it's easy to miss. Chocolate croissant was 2 CHF and very good. Charitea in the fridge was also very tasty (not very sweet but quite lemony), but the safety seal was already broken. Not sure if that's just how it works because the bottles can be recycled at ass bar for 50 centimes. read more
