This park has basketball courts, public exercising equipment, fountains, large spaces where people can gather to do morning exercises, and a big lot where it hosts a lot of shows. Every so often there is something happenin including flower shows, food stalls during CNY, displays etc. This time it has panda displays with the 75th year of CCP.

However, this park is basically the park where you will find one of those ubiquitous objects that are scattered all across the former British Empire, and that is the statue of Queen Victoria. Once again, I'm not entirely sure how long this statue will remain since I suspect that there will be a time when places will want to move on from their past.

I am generally very keen on parks, regardless of their size. It's always great to have a little…read morepatch of green in the city, a little away from the bustling city. This is the case for Wan Chai Park, less known and frequented than other bigger ones like Victoria Park, for example. It's a minute away from Wan Chai wet market yet it took me a while to discover it. But now that I know about it, it's become my fav green spot. It's got a little bit of everything: a pond, a big soccer pitch, an elderly training area (how cool is that?!), children's playground it's well sheltered and there is quite a lot of seating space (both benches and fences). On weekdays it's mainly old people and young guys who you can find there, especially the latter, playing soccer. On weekends it's full of kids. It's easy to find a good shadow that makes staying at the park pleasant...on a warm Sunday afternoon I went there to read trying to avoid other busy parks...and I found a quiet spot, actually close to the playground area. And the huge trees made for a great roof! Sometimes I go there without a book, just to chill out, and sit around the pond...so relaxing! Its locations is great for me but it's a little hidden: you can access both from Cross Lane or Queen's Road East (and climb down the stairs from there).

And it is right in the middle of a busiest street in HK.

Jamie W and I were pretty much the only ones who walked into the park, which was totally fine by us. I was surprised to find out it was only built in 1991 because it felt well established as an urban oasis. Because it's on a hillside, the landscape is scrupulously terraced connected by leisurely paths festooned with flowers. The central pond was quite a draw for serious photographers with huge lotus plants, turtles sunning themselves on the rocks, and colorful schools of koi converging on the shoreline. On week days I don't spend much time wandering around the streets (especially with this hot and…read morehumid weather...) but I devote some time to walk around on the weekends. A few months ago I used to go to New Territories and look for big opened spaces, like organic farms and the like, but I've realized there are still so many little spots to be discovered not so far from home. Wan Chai is full of surprises, whether it's that little boutique at a corner that you had missed every time you walked past, that lovely coffee shop that has a cozy terrace at the back, that health store, that park, that...oh, what's that? Looks like a playground. Famed Ship Street really has a little bit of everything: super hype bars and restaurants with J Senses at the forefront, exclusive J Residence, a couple of small holes in the wall that serve juices and sandwiches and, yeah, a playground named after the street. What's special about it? Basically, that you don't expect it there. It's always great to find a little space that few people go to and take a rest from the bustle around. It's just a playground, but I love the fact that it's laid across three levels: on the first there is a plot for children, on the second there's just an opened area and the third is a shaded area, small and not populated with flowers or green precisely, but there's a sitting area. Right now some workings are taking place around and it may not be as quite as it usually is but I love this spot to read or simply to take a break from my weekend tours around Wan Chai.

It's such a busy area at that time in the evening that it's a little hard to even walk around. Half way through my place, I usually find myself in need of a break. This sitting area is a great spot to stop, wind down and then continue. It's nothing special: really tiny, quiet space, normally frequented by elderly people. I guess it's called sitting area because it's not big enough for it to be called playground, but there are a couple of swings at the end for kids. There is also a fitness corner for the elderly on the left as you walk in. In every single playground and park I've been to, I've seen some old lady or man working out there and I find that really amazing. In few countries you see the elderly so active! And it's usually really early in the morning or late in the evening. As I stop by in the evenings there aren't many people around...usually just someone else doing the same as me: taking a breath. It's surprisingly quiet as Sam Pan Street is a dead end. So, you know, if you go for your groceries in this area too, here you have a little patch to stop and recompose yourself and your bags...and then carry on.

This 423 hectare country park is full of nature and ecological resources. I have participated in hike trails several times and the terrain is rugged as the elevation rises but it is scenic beautiful. It provides spectacular elevated views of Victoria Peak and Aberdeen Upper Reservoir and Aberdeen Lower Reservoir. It provides a place to ponder thoughts and personal reflection in meditation for mental health with day hikes and strolls as a time-out from this volatile world. Serene. Phlegmatic disposition is the result achieved. Recluse time for one to recharge. Note: Accessible to the physically disabled. Wear sneakers or hiking boots, bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and a camera. I thought it was the perfect gem for Hong Kong, especially the location of being a park right on the harbour. The concrete track that circles the park is about a 5km circle and I've had many runs on that. Special perk: free yoga classes on Saturday mornings in the park there. There is a nice sidewalk along the waterfront that is popular with joggers and romantic couples alike. One weekends the greenspace is typically filled with families out enjoying the weather. For dog owners, the park also houses a pet garden (dog park) located very close to the Macau Ferry Terminal building adjacent to the Central Police Station. Offering a fairly large section of grass surrounded by bushes, the garden has two water spigots and semi-covered seating for owners. Bring your own water bowl to fill up however, as your pooch will get thirsty. This is a favorite destination of our pug.

The Wong Nai Chung Reservoir Park is pretty much what the name describes: it is a public park…read morecentered on a reservoir in Wong Nai Chung Gap. It's quite easy to get to, as there is a bus stop just down the hill served by busses from both the Wan Chai side and Stanley side of the island. The reservoir itself is fairly small but perfect bot a paddle boat ride. Just remember your mosquito repellant! You can also walk out over the dam side of the reservoir, which has a great view down towards Aberdeen and is part of several trails in the area. The site also has some WWII relics nearby along the trails, if you're into seeing that sort of thing. There's a snack shop at the boat rental location if you're hungry but selection is limited so your own picnic might be nicer!

Because water is only available in the neighboring playground area, I usually bring a backpack stocked with water, a portable water bowl, and mosquito repellant spray. You're going to need that mosquito repellant! They're crazy bite-y in this park, so I suggest going with maximum DEET. And maybe layer that with a repellant bracelet. And anklet. And reapply that spray! In the early days before I wised up about using protection - mosquito repellant - I once counted 60+ bites between both of my legs. Nightmare! Sasha (my dog) is quite social and loves chasing his new friends around, playing ball, and socializing. I've also made some human friends that I look forward to seeing on weekdays! On the weekends we tend to go somewhere much nicer - like Stanley, Shek O or even Cyperport. You may not find much grass here, but your dog will enjoy the park nevertheless!
