Hong Kong Wetland Park in Tin Shui Wai was probably one of our highlights: the park being a huge open area with ecodiversity that few Hong Kongers ever get to truly appreciate. If I hadn't worked in Yuen Long, I'm not sure I would've ever heard of the Wetland Park, which would have been a shame since the project site has been designed so well, architecturally and educationally. There's a butterfly garden, and a few trails that pass by mangroves, fishponds and streams - all seemingly miles away from the urban Hong Kong hustle and bustle. So, strap on your fanny packs, rock your sun visors, and dip in a bath of sun screen, because the Wetland Park is a day-trip of eco-friendly fun. Down with the 18 degree aircons! Well, down with the 18 degree aircons for a little bit: there's an indoor exhibition area, the Visitor Centre, where you can learn about animals that live in the wetlands - including Pui Pui the crocodile, who has a home at the Wetland Reserve. The viewing gallery also gives you a good view of the Wetland Reserve too from an indoor site. Admission is $30 for a standard ticket, while concessionary tickets are half price. The Park is a great place to take the kids, to get some fresh air, or to learn more about conservation in Hong Kong.

As far as I know, taking the 82 minibus from Tsuen Wan is the easiest way of getting here. Because of the distance traveled and the limited seating, it's best to stand in line early, since the wait at the bus stop can be pretty long. Near the trailhead, there's a shop for snacks and drinks as well as public restrooms. There are a number of ways to go about your adventure. Since we were trying to get back before dark and avoid the next rainstorm, we covered Pineapple Dam and Waterside Paperbarks, extended a little past Shing Mun Reservoir Delta before turning around to check out Shing Mun Reservoir Main Dam. While there were a few stairs and some incline, the trail was mostly flat as well as well-kept and easy to traverse. Breaking away from the main loop, there were portions with gnarly trees, rocky boulders you can climb, and flatlands for day-camping. Another perk is that the wildlife around here roam freely. A herd of cattle were grazing near the reservoir's edge unbothered by passersby. A local troop of monkeys made their appearance, with a few more brazen than others. Word of advice: If you've got your phone in hand or any other small object, they might mistake it for food and lunge towards you, so maintain some distance. If you happen to have driven and parked in an area with monkeys, well...they might just make it their bed and scratch it up, perhaps even leave a dollop or two...We also chanced upon a kaleidoscope of butterflies along the way, many of which were uniquely patterned. Finally, there was a shared rest area completely occupied by a pack of dogs before they went on their way. Fun, fairly straightforward, and not too physically demanding trail for most folks. For humidity and possible chance of rain, bring an umbrella, a water bottle, and change of clothes. Next time I'll try completing the entire loop.

I spontaneously decided to go to Lamma Island for hiking on a Saturday morning. That meant I got…read morethere in the afternoon, not the greatest time for that as it was pretty hot and humid. However, I did enjoy the day, the landscape, the villages and the beaches over there; they make you feel like you've left Hong Kong for a while or at least the Hong Kong many of us think about most of the time. I took a ferry from Central to Sok Kwu Wan that took around 40 minute. At arrival, you are welcome by a row of small seafood restaurants. I had packed some emergency food and decided to carry on the route to the closest beach, Lo So Shing. It was a little crowded and after a quick break, I decided to carry on. I wasn't aware most of the path is not shaded and I wasn't wearing a cup. In fact, the nature there is wild but most of the bushes are very low so you're completely exposed (to the sun, in my case). So caps and sunscreen are advisable. Obviously, I got burnt. On my way there I met a guy who was coming back and going to Lo So Shing because he was a little disappointed with Hung Shing Yeh, the beach I was heading to. Nevertheless, I carried on, arrived there, sat down and drank a ton of water. The beach isn't big, but it was less crowded and it is, in my opinion, a much nicer one. Yeah, you see the power station from there but I've you've been hiking, you've seen it along the way, so you know it's still going to be there when you walk down to the shore. It's not a great view (so I cropped all my pictures afterwards!) but it's part of the landscape. I met an expat who had been living in Lamma for a few years. She found it a lot quieter, more peaceful and she wanted to stay long...live there is definitely another story. At the end of the afternoon I walked to Yung Shue Wan to take the ferry from there (this time, only 30 minutes). While waiting for the ferry I sat down at a bench close to the pier and admire such beautiful view, I couldn't get enough!

The Island is small so you can walk from one side to the other. If you do plan to spend the day then I suggest getting to Yung Shue Wan, Lamma Island: Take a ferry from Central Pier No. 4 to Yung Shue Wan. It takes about 30 minutes. Then leaving from Sok Kwu Wan, Lamma Island: Take a ferry from Sok Kwu Wan to Central or Aberdeen. Stop 1: Yung Shue Wan the main residential area on Lamma Island, with shops, bars, cafes and restaurants. Stop 2: Hung Shing Yeh Beach (Around a 20-minute walk from Yung Shue Wan Pier) white sandy beach, you can enjoy the sun, sand and water. Stop 3: Tin Hau Temple Stop 4: Sok Kwu Wan This tiny village is still very much focused on fishing. The seafood restaurants along the bay are great!

Small, but well loved neighborhood temple with unique coiled incense hanging and wafting through…read morethe air. There's a small public outside courtyard, smaller inner courtyard with incense shop and reception, and three different altars. Two other people were doing devotion while I was there, a lady was washing the floor, and a man was attending the reception/shop. I almost missed it because the pedestrian street has so many things that could easily distract you and make you miss it if you aren't looking for the simple white arch along the alley.

But I believe with three "Man Mo" temples around Hong Kong and the SAR, this one is a worthy stop if you find yourself in the area. Because it is in Tai Po, it is void of tourists and quaint. It feels very local and peaceful. It was built in 1891 and was declared a historical monument in 1984. More so than other temples I have seen, this place is very well taken care of. The small courtyard was so exceptionally clean and manicured. The temple is also small and dedicated to the God of Literature (Man) and the God of War (Mo). We were the only two people there, other than the one man who was attending the temple reception desk. This temple is located about mid way down Fu Shin Street, which is a small market street for shopping (less tourist trinkets and more designed for locals) and also around the corner from the Railroad Museum.

Cheung Chau 長洲 is one of those fisherman village and island . The words mean " Long Island " that probably describes the length of the few beaches on the island . We visited it in January 2026 . It was a beautiful day with blue sky and cool breeze from the ocean. We tried the home made fish balls and beef tendon with noodles in soup ( shop name is 偉記麫家 Wai Kee noodle shop " . The noodle soup , deep fried fish skins , beef tendons , milk tea with evaporated milk were all tasty ! We hiked a short hike like one hour , toured all the famous sits on the island . Cheung Chau is apparently a popular place to eat for locals. I did always try my best to eat as good of food here as possible. The first time I visited here was the day I decided to end things with an ex. It was a difficult day for me but I was at least able to enjoy a beautiful day at the beach with friends. Be careful though where on the beach you are. Some parts of the beach might be cleaner than others. The second time I came here, I was with a new friend who showed me a place on the cliff where we could I watch the sunset. We were getting to know each other, but for some reason by the end of our day together, I decided to confess that I had a crush. It was perhaps the combination of the sunset, the music playing, and the nature of our conversation. That's how romantic a beach cliff sunset is! This is all to say, this island is beautiful and worth a stop by if you have time in Hong Kong.

The space is small, so it doesn't take long to explore, but it was fun to poke around the exhibits and appreciate the effort that went into curating them. I also liked that there were some handmade souvenirs that I could pick up! It was a charming and worthwhile stop, especially if you're in the area already.

Central Market in Hong Kong was the first wet market in the city. Now it is a fresh food market…read morethat also has dry goods and restaurants. It is a fun food market to explore. Central Market is one of two existing Bauhaus market buildings in Hong Kong. Beside the market was the first public female restroom in Hong Kong. At one point, Central Market was the largest meat market in Asia. The building was renovated and most recently reopened in 2021. So nice to explore the stalls and sweet treats that are available to buy. Make sure to have yen as not all of the vendors accept credit cards. Love the anime characters. Try the roasted goose. A giant statue of the Hong Kong flower sits prominently in front of Golden Bauhinia Square which is located on Hong Kong Island and is a popular tourist destination as it sits right along Victoria Harbour and with that there's no designated parking spot but we were blessed to have a friend that took us around the island and dropped us for a quick pic and to enjoy the stunning glory that represents Hong Kong. Yes it's absolutely a tourist spot as you need to be a bit patient to get a clear shot of it while avoiding locals making the most of it by asking for money in exchange to take your and/or group shot of it with ease. There's many spots to enjoy on this island and though this is a simple yet complex spot to get to does give you a lovely view of the harbour taking in the beauty that Hong Kong has to offer. Compared to the many landmarks and tourist attractions in Hong Kong (#1), the Golden Bauhinia…read more(金紫荊廣場) is not terribly impressive beyond its tasteful design and prominent position in front of the HK Convention Centre. It stands 6 meters tall overlooking the beautiful Victoria Harbour and faces the mighty skyscrapers of Kowloon. For those not in the know, this is where the "Handover" occurred (#2) almost exactly 20 years ago. Every single day there is a flag ceremony held by the HK Police Force, who yawnfully raise the flags of China and Hong Kong, while Police Band plays the national anthem, followed by a performance from the Police Pipe Group. This happens daily at 8am and it's a (boring) show from start to finish. Of course, a majority of the people here are heaps of tourists who came off of a shuttle bus. It's an attraction, but not a serious one. I'd bundle it along the same lines as the Symphony of Lights (https://www.yelp.com/biz/uNe6EPhUrC2sm-IHohSR2Q), just worse music and way less colorful. ___________ (#1) Is there more awe than the Tian Tan Buddha?
