Going on a nature walk after the rain subsides is one of those simple pleasures in life that rivals drinking lemonade on a hot day or napping after lunch. As far as I know, taking the 82 minibus from Tsuen Wan is the easiest way of getting here. Because of the distance traveled and the limited seating, it's best to stand in line early, since the wait at the bus stop can be pretty long. Near the trailhead, there's a shop for snacks and drinks as well as public restrooms. There are a number of ways to go about your adventure. Since we were trying to get back before dark and avoid the next rainstorm, we covered Pineapple Dam and Waterside Paperbarks, extended a little past Shing Mun Reservoir Delta before turning around to check out Shing Mun Reservoir Main Dam. While there were a few stairs and some incline, the trail was mostly flat as well as well-kept and easy to traverse. Breaking away from the main loop, there were portions with gnarly trees, rocky boulders you can climb, and flatlands for day-camping. Another perk is that the wildlife around here roam freely. A herd of cattle were grazing near the reservoir's edge unbothered by passersby. A local troop of monkeys made their appearance, with a few more brazen than others. Word of advice: If you've got your phone in hand or any other small object, they might mistake it for food and lunge towards you, so maintain some distance. If you happen to have driven and parked in an area with monkeys, well...they might just make it their bed and scratch it up, perhaps even leave a dollop or two...We also chanced upon a kaleidoscope of butterflies along the way, many of which were uniquely patterned. Finally, there was a shared rest area completely occupied by a pack of dogs before they went on their way. Fun, fairly straightforward, and not too physically demanding trail for most folks. For humidity and possible chance of rain, bring an umbrella, a water bottle, and change of clothes. Next time I'll try completing the entire loop. read more

In comments made Monday after a bilateral virtual summit between France and Germany, Macron said claims that Denmark's secret service helped the U.S. National Security Agency spy on Merkel and other German politicians between 2012 and 2014 were "not acceptable amongst allies" if true. https://www.forbes.com/sites/jonathanponciano/2021/05/31/macron-and-merkel-condemn-us-spying-after-new-wiretapping-report/?sh=1f427fc52a75 read more

The Shing Mun reservoir is a great location to for a hike for two reasons: its actually right in the middle of town and its a great way to learn of a different side of town. On the hills of Tsuen Wan, the reservoir was one of the many that were built in the 1930s as Hong Kong continued to grow as a city. The colonial outbuildings and walls surrounding the reservoir will leave you in no doubt that this was a British feat of engineering and at times you will wonder whether you are actually in Hong Kong. A commemorative wall at one part of the trail will also confirm that this reservoir was opened in time for jubilee celebrations for King George V. During WWII this location was also a pivotal location for the defence of Hong Kong as the Gindrinkers line was built along the side of this location and many fought here to prevent Hong Kong from falling to the Japanese forces. History aside, this is a good trail for the entire family to enjoy. You won't get any super steep hills and dangerous animals (aside from the super aggressive macaques- please don't feed them). The sights are also beautiful as there seems to be surprises at every corner and the sights make it a welcome break away from Hong Kong's masses of concrete blocks. You will see anglers fishing from the reservoir but please do obtain a license from AFCD before you do or you run the risk of being fined. There is a BBQ site at the end of the trail (or the start if you come in that way) and at the weekends you will find cars parked on the side of the road and masses of people converging at the small site. Not a good time to come as there are just too many people, too much mess, kids running around and cars fighting to find somewhere to park. A far better choice would be to come over on a weekday and enjoy the quietness which is what you should be coming for. read more

If you wanna watch monkeys, this is the spot. Beware though, as they can be aggressive. There's a loop trail that takes you around the reservoir. Walking on the dam is quite incredible, with an amazing view. BBQ pits are on the main road. read more
