This place is like a half food court style ramen place. And it has a plus 10% service to it. So I…read morewill review this restaurant based on both food and service. I arrived with a Japanese style welcome, but the volume was rather low. As we were seated, the server delivered two hot tea for the adults and one cold water for the kid. I would consider that as very detailed oriented service. However, we were not being served for ordering food and refilling drinks for a very long time. Clearly the waiting staffs were not doing their jobs but chatting with each other for a good 15 minutes, disregarding the customers. As for the food, it took much longer than normal for ramen to be served. Which is disappointing. I think the only thing to save this experience for now is the taste of the food. However, the food is just so so. Worse is the portion being small. And I am specifically saying small for they only provide one slice of pork. And the limited edition fish spice ramen is nothing special. As the service nearly ended, I have noticed the servers only care to clear the table and getting the bill. They will not refill tea and water unless asked for. Overall, I am disappointed by the portion of meat, but mostly by the service. Totally not worth the 10% added mandatorily.

There are quite a few branches of this place around Hong Kong, all have a slight difference in terms of the names but I do not really see much difference regarding its dishes and food quality. I always love ramen. I guess I am one of those locals who just adore Japanese culture but too poor to book a ticket to fly to Japan. Anyhow, whenever I am hungry, the first thing that pops up in my head has to be Japanese food - sushi, sashimi, ramen, etc. Menya Musashi offers quite decent ramen and it is sort of better than the average ramen. And one more thing I like about this place is its logo - a traditional Japanese soldier holder a sword - a rather cool design I have to say. For the ramen, there are several choices like the red spicy one; the black one with squid oil and the white one with original taste. Since I cannot take the heat; and I certainly do not want my teeth to go scary black, I normally go for the plain pork one so as it tastes just as good. One good thing about this place is that egg sometimes is served as a whole instead of chopped in half. I love it when they do that as once I bite into it, its egg yolk will squirt out and it is a fun feeling.

Ichiran really has a great system down so your order is ready as soon as possible. There's nothing quite like the joy of filling out your paper to customize your ramen. The seats have dividers to the left and right (you can still chat if you've come with friends though!) so when you get your ramen, it really feels like it's just you and your ramen in that space. It's pretty magical. They also have really good water...there's just something really good about it, you'll see. Go here. I still dream about Ichiran and I've been back in the US for over a year now. PS I definitely had already eaten some of my ramen before I took this pic. No restraint

It's hard to beat the convenience of a restaurant that's open 24/7. One unexpectedly memorable part of the visit was the bathroom. The toilet paper setup was surprisingly impressive. It was thoughtful, efficient, and very Japanese in its attention to detail. It sounds silly, but it genuinely stood out. If you're in Causeway Bay and want a dependable bowl of delicious tonkotsu ramen at any hour, Ichiran delivers.

"They serve what!?" was my reaction when my friend told me about the BBQ Pork Bowl at Kamitora…read more神虎拉麵. That's right, barbecued pork over rice, served at a ramen joint. I had to find out for myself. Kamitora is on Amoy street, exactly one street next to another ramen shop, 黑龍拉麵 Koku Ryu Ramen. Kamitora seems to be the more popular one as there was a small line when I arrived. After a 10 minute wait, we were seated and served. I didn't know what to expect of a Japanese BBQ Pork Bowl, at a ramen place. Since I was thinking the local Chinese ones with a fried egg on top, drizzled with fragrant soy sauce. Only found in Cha Chan Teng's and bbq meat shops. It's a favorite local Hong Kong dish, immortalized by Stephen Chow's God of Cookery. The Japanese version also had the fried egg on top, with a veeery runny yolk, meant to be pierced and mixed with the sweet soy sauce in the rice. The bbq pork was neither Chinese style nor the slices like in the ramen - it was cubes of fatty pork that were melt in your mouth. I took a spoonful of the rice, egg and soy sauce mixture, topped it with a cube of pork and egg. Heaven. An instant contender to my " what would be your last meal on earth" question. At Hkd 45, 1/3 of the price of the Kamitora Special, this was a great deal too. Next time, I'm ordering two. The Kamitora Special was their classic noodle, with all the condiments, and extra slices of pork. It was decent, but the pork was very lean for some reason, had all the fat parts been used in the rice? It was decent, though I think Butao and Ichiran have more memorable noodles. But in all fairness, I was still being overwhelmed by the BBQ Pork Bowl. Mmm.

I stayed in Hong Kong for 3 months and I looked for some good ramen places. Butao Ramen in Tai Koo…read morewas by far the best ramen I've had. I walked 20 minutes every time to get here, and it was always worth it. I usually go around 8 or 9 pm because there's less people. The small size of the restaurant doesn't bother me because of how few people there usually are around this time. The prices are a little expensive ~ around HKD$96, without any noodle refills or toppings. I usually get the Red King because I love spicy food. And I can tell you the spices are so rich and fulfilling. If you love noodles and soup, I can assure you you'll love the Red King at Butao. I've also tried the Black King, and it was alright. I definitely prefer the Red King over the Black. I tried the Red King with x4 spiciness level and it was just enough for me to be able to handle it. Any more spicy and it maybe would've been to hard to eat. The hospitality is great. The waitresses and waiters are always ready to help and they put a napkin on your lap right before you start eating. The place comes with free refillable lemon water. The ramen only takes about 5 minutes to prepare, so very fast service. They have an English and Chinese menu, so there's no need to worry about a language barrier. There will be at least one waiter/waitress who speaks English.

The restaurant itself is rather small and crowded, so it's a bit difficult getting to your table. The staff, who are hospitable and work efficiently, will give you an order form to fill out after being seated. Food is delivered promptly. I never had to wait for too long, especially if there was a line, because you fill out your form while waiting in line, so that by the time you are seated, your food can be delivered soon after. Now, for the food itself, it's great! Since you can pretty much customise everything about your ramen, you can get the ramen you like. From the meat that goes into your ramen, to the noodle thickness, everything's pretty much up to you. The prices are also reasonable for the amount you get. If the restaurant itself wasn't so small, I'd give it 5 stars. If you're a ramen lover, definitely give Butao Ramen a try.
