I tried the $100 version this time as opposed to the $50 version last time. It arrived in an actual ceramic bowl and was decent, taste-wise. I'd return in the future for more.

Hoi tin Tong serves something certainly that is local (not to Hong Kong but Chinese for that…read morematter)- Tortoise Jelly. to describe what is with my limited knowledge on the stuff, I would describe it as a jelly- its slightly bitter tasting hence you will always have some syrup on hand to sweeten it. It could be served hot or cold in a bowl and it looks no different from a cranberry jelly. It look the same too with its black/ dark brown appearance. So what exactly is it? Supposedly its is made with part of a tortoise shell and cooked together with a variety of Chinese herbal medicine (don't ask me what they are since I wouldn't know what they are even if I had a name for it). So what does it do? In Chinese medicine there is the notion of "heat" in our bodies, when this "heat" gathers up, then your body becomes imbalance and your body will suffer as a result through spots, bad breath and tiredness. This jelly is supposed to be a cure / treatment for such problems; it is a cleansing agent that seeks to put your body back into balance. Does it work? On me it did. After a few months of erratic sleep and eating patterns I found myself to be in the "imbalanced" state- I went on a course of such jellys (one a week) and within a few weeks I saw marked improvement. The brand has taken a battering as of late for poor quality control and questions over whether the ingredients are what they are. I have had no problems so far so I will continue having this.
