I did see an Indian family while we were there, so I'm sure communication should be fine if you don't speak Cantonese. This meal was towards the end of our stay in HK and it's a good meal to cleanse your body. Afterwards, you can walk the strip on Nathan Road and go shopping - walk off your meal!

I think the trap is that dishes can *sound* vegetarian, but almost all common broths and sauces contains non-vegetarian items in it. Whenever I go vegetarian, I have a hard time finding more than one item on the menu at any cha chaan teng, because I know what actually goes in it. Which is what makes these sorts of vegetarian restaurants popular. Chinese vegetarian is not just "no killing of animals". They adhere to buddhist vegetarian habits, and don't use certain pungent vegetables like onions, garlic or chives in their cooking. That said, they are also somehow ok with making vegetables look and taste like meat. Gluten puffs that is chewy like a piece of stewed chicken? Sure! Soy protein packed together and sliced like ham? Why not. That is the sort of food you will get here -- vegetarian versions of popular pan-Chinese dishes, with the protein replaced by various plant-items ranging from the innocuous (tofu) to the there's-no-way-this-is-organic. Every bite brought me such surprise, because they do resemble the original dishes -- but it also makes me think, why? Are we not worthy to have vegetarian dishes that celebrate the vegetables on their own merit? That said, if you want some Chinese dishes but don't eat meat, this isn't bad and have a lot more variety of vegetarian dishes than other Chinese places. It also isn't bad for a good karma meal on Buddha's birthday. It just isn't something I actively look forward to.

The sandwich was outstanding, though, with the kind of tuna salad I wish I could find in the supermarket delis in Vegas. And the superb baguette also had me longing for what I miss from the East Coast - a crunchy exterior. Sigh. It was the perfect pick-me-up after a long day of walking through the streets of Kowloon and Tsim Sha Tsui.

This is a branch restaurant on the Hong Kong Island side, their original store is in Kowloon. Our first attempt to find this restaurant ended us up in another Vietnamese Pho place which turns out to be pretty good. (in fact better then this one!! how ironic!). We came at lunch rush, at around 1pm on a Thursday, as we walked towards the shop, we can see office workers are all getting out from all the surrounding buildings to all the entries around the block. We went in and was asked to sit at a booth, we had to sit on the same side and leave the other side for another party of 2, this is common practice during lunch hours or restaurants that are busy; all the tables are up for sharing. As the Bun Bo Hue is highly recommended I already know what to order, my partner ordered the Banh Mì. My BBH came after 15mins, and soon after the Bánh Mì arrived. One sip of my BBH soup, I already know how high our standard has become as we are so spoiled by all the Pho and Vietnamese Restaurants we have in N. America, especially in the States!! The soup lacks any depth, even though they do have the spice from the BBH, but without a good soup base, it just tasted very watery and in this case its also on the sweet side which makes it not too pleasant! They do use the thick noodles as you can see in the photo. Bánh Mi : a-ok and not outstanding ( yes, I may be unfair to use our N. American Vietnamese Standard to compare ), but taste is taste, it still lacks the wow factor we sometimes experience when we bite into a GOOD BM!! All in all, not as good as the local reviewer touted it to be, and I believe I am giving a fair review base on taste and flavour.

The folks who run the place are certainly quite nice, and after some consultation with the server, I took his recommendation for green curry with chicken. We have a very good Thai food scene in Los Angeles, and while I assumed it would be good here in Hong Kong, unfortunately this was a bit of a disappointment (I was later told by an HK foodie that the Thai food is in fact better in LA). The first thing that put me off was the chicken. It may be that chicken here at the smaller places tends to use more "humble" cuts than we're used to in the States, with fat and skin attached, and there was something a little strange about the texture to me. While I've never seen cauliflower in a green curry--there were also string beans--it was certainly fine. But the other problem was green curry itself. It just didn't have a ton of flavor. Maybe they figured "white guy, let's make it super bland," but even if it's not spicy--and I told them medium was fine--it should still be flavorful. So even though everyone here was nice and the food was certainly reasonable in price, it's hard to say things were A-OK when this dish unfortunately was a bit lacking.

We unexpectedly came here for a bite when the Indian spot around the corner was closed to celebrate Diwali. Holidays happen! Loved it! Small, clean, hospitable and friendly (all the staff seemed to like each other and you could tell! - kind of a nice twist!), menu in English, food hot, fresh and full of flavor. This spot shares a similar name as another restaurant in Wan Chai, but upon asking our waiter, they are not related at all. This place is a solo operation. It is not fancy and is a touch short of being called a "hole in the wall," so keep your expectations in check. The tomato juice with lemon was a tasty beverage to accompany my lunch.
