Why is the restaurant named after a dog? Fret not, dog lovers, in fact the restaurant is so named…read morebecause the owner himself has a pair of adorable Chow Chows and decided that his business should so be named. Situated in a corner section of the Fung Yau Street South that is now famed for its variety of restaurants, Chow Chow boasts western dishes at local prices. The menu does change daily though you will always find a steak of some sort and the cream of mushroom soup (a must try) is always available. If the heavier items are causing issues with your waistline then there are also the choices of salads and at times, Japanese bentos (though this is not always on the menu). It has both indoor and outdoor seating whereby your four legged companions are welcomed on the outside portion. Inside it has a calm atmosphere and a huge wall-to-wall photo of the aforesaid canines of which the restaurant is named after. Service is quick but for a reason: they do ask you to return the table at a set time and this may not be to the liking of some. Also an issue is that it is a victim of its own success- getting a table on busy days (e.g. weekends) demands the patience of a saint and service quality is also suffers accordingly. Advice is to go on weekdays and enjoy the dishes which on the island will cost you double or more. Parking is limited and most patrons simply park on the side of the street, though do be prepared to run out to your pride and joy half way through your dinner as the 5-0 come knocking issuing tickets (which could put a real damper on a nice dinner).

We enjoyed the meal very much and would love to go there again some time. The location can be easily missed since the sign is not too obvious. It's located in a commercial building on some floor (sorry I forgot) that can be accessed by the elevator right when you enter. A few of the staff there could speak and hear, and our host was one of them. We were greeted and promptly seated at a table. The place wasn't big so the tables were closely spaced. However, the space didn't feel too cramped. We were handed the menus with clear, big photos. We flagged down one of the servers and we were using hand gestures to communicate. The photos on the menu definitely helped a lot! At the beginning of the menu, they also showed a brief history of the restaurant and some simple hand gestures you could use to communicate with the hearing impaired. All the staff were really friendly and always smiling. The food was really good! We tried a lot of items. The eggplant dish was delicious, not too greasy and lots of flavors. My favorite was the pan-fried veggie noodles with chewy gluten balls, black fungi, mushrooms, bamboo shoots and greens. The noodles were very crispy and the sauce and toppings gave good flavors. The fried tofu skin with sweet and sour sauce is another dish not to be missed. It's supposed to be one of their signature dishes and it did not disappoint. The tofu skin was crispy on the outside and soft and juicy inside. Sauce went great with the tofu. The steamed veggie dumplings had a good texture for the wrapping and the veggies tasted fresh and hot. We over-ordered and had to take leftovers home! Overall the experience was great. Light, healthy, delicious meal, friendly service and reasonable prices. Highly recommend this restaurant for locals and expats in the Wanchai area!

I eventually became a regular while keeping my expectations dialed low (#1) and learned to appreciate this place for what it was: a laid back cafe in the heart of SSP. At first, my visits were strictly to kill time, drink a little something, and get lost in internet space with their speedy WiFi, but I eventually graduated to spending copious amounts of time here while experimenting with their food options, while even holding a few business meetings here. Whenever I was in SSP, this eventually became my home away from home. It was like being in (a narrow room in) the US, but without all the commercialism. The interior is pretty tight; many folks who are working / studying (in addition to dining and sipping) are usually by themselves. It doesn't get too crowded in here even during peak hours, which is why I enjoyed coming here so often. The service is surprisingly great. The owner, Michael is extremely hospitable and the rest of the staff is very welcoming, amiable, and efficient. For expats who are coming here for a little breakfast nostalgia (especially their ever popular "all-day breakfast" for $88HKD), keep your expectations tapered in knowing the food will naturally be served in HK portions and tastes. Don't forget to enjoy one of their lovely mochas either inside (#2) or in their limited outdoor seating. ___________ (#1) Because ... western food in Hong Kong. (#2) Because ... AC.

For an appetizer, I ordered the satay chicken skewers. The chicken was very sour and adding the peanut sauce on top of it didn't make it better. It was a disappointment. What really ticked me off was that I didn't even get my entree yet and the waiter handed me the bill. I'm like, are you serious? I'm definitely not coming back here again.

Despite it being a British colony and everything, Hong Kong surprisingly does not have many fish and chips places; the closest you get is maybe having 魚柳 for breakfast, which is kind of a different thing all together. The fish here generally is good. Kind of expensive, but that's sort of par for the course in central, though I was surprised that the portions were pretty small. the ambiance is quite nice, and feel here is somewhat sophisticated. I am not naturally inclined to places of high expenses even if it is worth the money, especially when I'm eating alone. Nonetheless for the only time I visited this place, the difference was that it was my friend's birthday and it would be very wrong for me not to join them. Walking down the stairs that leads to the interior of the restaurant, there were basically two type of diners in the room; they were either rich banker type of suit wearing businessmen or couples dressing up to celebrate their special days. The felt so under-dressed that day that I wish I could go back and get changed; it was almost humiliatingly to dress in t-shirts and shorts to go into restaurants as such. Back to the main point, the food and beverage. This place is famous for its seafood and oysters and I would not disagree with that. We ordered a few oysters as suggested by the waiter and they were as fresh as they can get. Oysters have to come fresh or they spoil rather quickly; Dotcod has specialize in the selection of oysters and has ensured the quality from origin to the plates of the customers. The waiters know their oysters too and it is not a bad move to ask them for recommendations. Other seafood dishes are worth trying as well; the white baits are fried to golden crispy perfection while the fisherman's pie is a variation on the traditional shepherd's pie but lighter and milder. I also enjoyed the foie gras and chicken liver parfait a lot; the creamy richness against the crunch of the toast makes the perfect combination, but since it is meant to be an appetizer, the portion was rather scant for a table of 6. For a restaurant with such high standards and quality, it is understandable why they charge such a price; but still, this would not be my highest priority for a place to have dinner. Well...put it this way...if I am more well off, I would definitely come to this place more often~ now you see my point?
