Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

We got here fairly early, so we didn't have to wait for a table. Service was as expected - quick, efficient, and no nonsense. A tell-tale sign of a good HK cafe. The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Note that they don't accept foreign credit cards, so be prepared with cash, Octopus, or Alipay.

Both were soooo good, hot or cold. I don't think the macaroni/ham soup or the egg ham toast were anything special, and would not bother ordering these again. The place is super popular, but the line moves quick. You may be seated with strangers at the same table (seems to be common practice in busy HK restaurants). Service was questionable, but I also saw a video online that they are purposely (& famously?) rude to the customers. What made me laugh was that we had barely sat down (my butt touched the seat for 0.1 second) and the waiter already wanted our order. When we said we needed extra time to go over the menu first, we got a bit of a death stare from the waiter. Their concept seems to be "come in, eat right away, and get the hell out!" I had been forewarned by my friend about the service here though, so I wasn't surprised. I'd still come again just for the pudding.

One thing to keep in mind, you might need to share table with other customers. I ordered the classic meal, macaroni with soup and ham, with scramble eggs, and buttered bread on the side. This meal also comes with a drink, and I ordered Hong Kong milk tea. The milk tea was smooth and authentic. If you want to experience 'Hong Kong' culture, this is the place for you.

My roomie ordered beef rice roll ($21 HKD) and I got Century Egg with Beef Congee ($30 HKD) with doughnut ($12) and my food was big. It's communal seating, so don't be surprised if you're sitting with other people. I like that this place has a napkin dispenser, which a lot of restaurants in Hong Kong don't give you napkins. Their congee is good and bubbling hot. Not the best I've had in Hong Kong but it's super quick and cheap. Their soy bean milk is delicious and homemade with no added preservatives. It's great cold too. Their rice crepes aren't too bad either. I like the sesame and sweet sauce they provide you on your table. Each time I've been here, it's been with my parents so they usually speak to them/my sparse Cantonese had gotten me by, not too sure if they speak too much English here. It gets crowded at peak times, but you can usually get a seat. Turn over time is super fast. They're efficent and friendly enough!

Go all the way to the back. They really try hard to lose you.... The interior is very classic HK style with tiles, a bit cramped. They are friendly but there is a minimum now and much more $ than other cha chaan teng's. The toast is the star. It is fried perfectly, very light and crispy but not too fried. Spread the melted butter and put lots of syrup on top and dig in. The milk tea is good though I had a hard time telling it apart TBH from say Kam Wah's which was also very good.

I kept following the GPS and at one point got so irritated because it said I arrived. Looked north, south, east, west-- arrived where?! After 10 minutes of walking I passed by a building and what do you know, it had Lan Fong Yuen and a bunch of other restaurants listed with their respective suite numbers. And of course, it was a completely different location from the one I've been to before. It was great though because I actually got to sit in and order some food this time. Place looks like a retro, older cafe that you see in TVB dramas. It is definitely more spacious than other places in Hong Kong so plently of seats available. Servers do speak some English to where communicating and ordering wasn't a problem. I also appreciate how there was a menu with photos! It always help to have visuals for people not familiar with certain dishes. Anyhow, we ordered the classic iced milk tea, crisp bun with butter, and thick toast. The crisp bun did come out burnt on the edges, which was a little offputting when it first got set on the table. But it did not taste burnt or affected the taste in anyway. I preferred the thick toast a little more, I think it's just overall texture of it being more soft and perhaps visually more appealing. My parents said they liked the bun more though. What I found was really sweet was one of the ladies was walking around, kind of paused for a bit before coming up to our table and pointed the syrup and signaled for us to pour it onto the toast. After we did it she smiled and gave a thumbs up. She knew we were foreigners and not knowing how to properly eat it and wanted to help us despite the language barrier. It shows that LFY really does care and want the best experience for their customers. Because you know, not many will do what she did. Having the mentality of "not my business, why should I care?" Or "I'm not the owner/manager, it's not my responsibility" (I'm pretty sure she wasn't as she was in uniform and in Asian cultures, usually the person at the register is the person in charge) I think that experience will stick with me for a lifetime. Oh and how could I end the review without my beloved iced milk tea! It tasted as wonderful as expected, not too bitter and not too sweet. It came out with the restaurant's cup and not the plastic to go ones with their signature. I was a little disappointed because now I won't have a pretty Instagram shot. I know, first world problems. But I saw a table with those cups so I think my feelings are justified. After finishing everything, I had ordered another iced milk tea to go so that solved my issue. As I'm writing this, I really want some LFY now. Well, till next time Hong Kong!
