It was a pleasant sort of day, and the park was a lovely thing to stumble onto. It was expansive and very walkable, with a lot of nice greenery and good people watching. And by people watching, I mean that the park was full of senior citizens getting in workouts--the park was equipped with cute, colorful, low resistance exercise equipment explicitly designed for the elderly. I saw one old lady doing leg presses, another cluster of them hanging out on mechanical stationary bikes. We didn't spend a ton of time at Cherry Street Park, but it seemed like a neat little spot, certainly a boon for locals. I'd love if my grandma had a free outdoor gym near her apartment. Just the thought of her gabbing with her church friends, pedaling very slowly on an exercise bike, makes me wish someone would copy this place in my city.

Jamie W and I were pretty much the only ones who walked into the park, which was totally fine by us. I was surprised to find out it was only built in 1991 because it felt well established as an urban oasis. Because it's on a hillside, the landscape is scrupulously terraced connected by leisurely paths festooned with flowers. The central pond was quite a draw for serious photographers with huge lotus plants, turtles sunning themselves on the rocks, and colorful schools of koi converging on the shoreline. This park has basketball courts, public exercising equipment, fountains, large spaces where people can gather to do morning exercises, and a big lot where it hosts a lot of shows. Every so often there is something happenin including flower shows, food stalls during CNY, displays etc. This time it has panda displays with the 75th year of CCP.

However, this park is basically the park where you will find one of those ubiquitous objects that are scattered all across the former British Empire, and that is the statue of Queen Victoria. Once again, I'm not entirely sure how long this statue will remain since I suspect that there will be a time when places will want to move on from their past.

To access this one, you'd have to walk up the steep hill that is Aberdeen Street or the hidden staircase off Staunton St, unless you're coming from Caine Road for which you're lucky to walk downwards. It's close proximity to PMQ and the Midlevels escalators makes it an ideal stop for tourists who may be overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle, locals who need a break, and those who have small children who want to run around.

There is a nice sidewalk along the waterfront that is popular with joggers and romantic couples alike. One weekends the greenspace is typically filled with families out enjoying the weather. For dog owners, the park also houses a pet garden (dog park) located very close to the Macau Ferry Terminal building adjacent to the Central Police Station. Offering a fairly large section of grass surrounded by bushes, the garden has two water spigots and semi-covered seating for owners. Bring your own water bowl to fill up however, as your pooch will get thirsty. This is a favorite destination of our pug.

I like how you can access it by either going off Ladder Street, by taking the road past the hidden Cafe Deadend, or from the "backyard" of the Hong Kong Museum of Medical Sciences. There's a decent-sized playground with a good variety of equipment. Since it's on a hill you'll have to walk down a lot of stairs so it might not be the most wheelchair/stroller accessible, but at each level there are benches to take a rest. I love how there's even an overhead bridge and a small fountain at the bottom. If nearby Blake Garden is too busy for your tastes, just head up the hill here... I'm pretty sure it'll be a lot quieter!
