I'm in and out of Hong Kong on a pretty regular basis, and one of my favorite places for fine dinning is Hutong, especially for Peking Duck. In a city where duck is available on every other block (in some areas, every few feet!), Hutong stands out. I can vouch for their claim of having the best Peking Duck in HK. That's one flex statement that's likely true. Ok. Let me share with you my most recent experience at Hutong, HK. One this occasion we kept it simple. For an appetizer we ordered the dim sum platter which had eight different types. Each one was absolutely delicious. Loved them. We also got the Flaming Peking Duck, and it was perfect. I can confidently say that it was the best I've ever had. Take a look at the pics and video and tell me it doesn't look delicious! We also ordered the chef's veggie fried rice, which is one of my longtime favorites on the menu; excellent. You come to Hutong not only for the fabulous northern Chinese cuisine, but you also come here for the upscale fine dining experience. It's a much more refined environment than say the New York Hutong, which I recently reviewed. At the NY Hutong people wear pretty much anything, but in Hutong HK people dress nicely, which adds to the atmosphere. Love it. I booked voucher for the aqualuna cruise on the traditional junk boat along with meal at hutong. The food was delicious, and the window view was amazing overlooking the harbour. My favorite was probably the appetizers and the fish. Usually cod is cooked with miso at fancy restaurants in the states, so this was a lovely change of flavor!!! Service was fast, and they cleared our plates quickly in order for us to head to our boat on time. Well rounded staff all around. My guy and I were seated at a table by the window. I was grateful he was able to get that reservation, as the view was incredible. Through the website, you are able to secure a window table by putting down a deposit. I saw a lot of people ask their servers to move to a window seat but they were denied. Unfortunately, other than the view, the food didn't really live up to the hype. The service felt extremely haphazard. The food would sometimes come back to back, or there would be a long drag in between. It was very impersonal, which was disappointing too. For the price of what they were charging, I'd say you're paying for the table location. I ordered the sparkling tea (welcome drink), and after I was done, I asked the server if I could order another one and he didn't know how to answer. I told him I would happily pay for another one, he then said ok and went away. He never came back nor did he acknowledge my request. The only dishes I thought were very well done was the Wagyu beef puff with black pepper and the Kang Po chili lobster. The first impressive of this restaurant was this place is really dark. Like I had to be super cautious when I walked to our table and one of my friends even tripped. Maybe that's something the restaurant should improve. Other than that, the view was amazing. You get to enjoy the Victoria harbour from your seat. It's definitely a great place for anniversaries and even business dinners. However, I would say the food was very fusion. We tried the egg with foie gras and caviar. Nothing special and that dish was kinda expensive. Dam dam noodles was okay. The duck was impressive how they presented it. A staff will come in with a trolley and burn the duck in front of you, adding some smoked flavour to the taste. We ordered a whole duck and that was good for four. Serving northern Chinese food, Hutong blends the traditional and the modern seamlessly both in food and decor. We ordered the 6 course Dinner Tasting Menu and shared 2 sets between 3 people. This was more than enough food, and we left quite stuffed. The peking duck was crisped in live flames and cut tableside. Honourable mentions to the lobster and the chocolate mochi, my favourite eats of the night. While the food was fantastic, it was expensive. However, you're certainly paying for an experience. The view at Hutong is one of the best in Hong Kong. On a clear day you get a unobstructed view of Central all the way to North Point. The interior design is also immaculate and really speaks to the Northern China theme of the restaurant. The food however, doesn't have a strong point of view and is not representative of Northern Chinese food. I would much rather come here for some drinks for the view and not for the food. Food: 3.25 stars Environment: 4.5 stars Service: 3.5 stars Value: 3.5 stars Overall: 3.5 stars I came for the Feng Wei brunch which has provided a sampling of seventeen dishes from bite sized dim sum to tapas size entrees. The assortment of food provides a mixture of cuisines across China and unfortunately a lot of misses on the taste and execution of some of the regional dishes. The dim sum was quite average and can't compete with what you can find in other similarly priced restaurants in HK. The mains were the best part of the meal. The kung Pao shrimp, beef tenderloin, and Sichuan cod dishes were all quite good. The desserts were the weakest part of the meal and was unfortunate that it ended in a poor note. read more

During my reservation, I made a request for a window seat so I could dine and look out at the Hong Kong skyline. They sent a email confirmation but did not state that my request was not accepted. When I arrived I was seated in the general dining area. This was really disappointing since I booked the restaurant for the skyline view. There was a real lack of communication that should be addressed. If you're unable to honor the request a email or phone call should have been attempted to contact the guest. I called to ensure that they take credit card in the morning of my reservation and they never mention anything. The hostess acknowledged the request but stated that there was no window table available for every time slot in the whole month of January. This sounds like an excuse and a poor one at that. Also the hostess stated she was going to talk to her co-worker about the issue and she never came back and ignore the whole situation which was shady and rude. This location get one star, due to the interaction with the hostess and how the situation was handle was unfitting of a fine dining restaurant. Probably take your money and find another place for dinner. While the view of the skyline is beautiful, I would recommend calling and confirming that you have a window seat or you will be disappointed like me during dinner. read more

Hutong, for what it is, it's like Westernized Chinese food and since my dining companions from out of town didn't have such adventurous tastes, it fit the bill for us. Besides the servers, I was the only Chinese diner, everyone else was non Chinese. This made for a very interesting dinner.... That being said, Hutong has a killer view, great traditional Chinese decoration and good service. When entering the restaurant, there was a huge tree decorated with wishes from people, it made for a fun experience for my friends. We had afternoon tea at MO and was not too hungry so we decided to eat light: Tea-smoked tofu sheets with carrots & mushrooms: This was plated beautifully and I didn't tell SO that it was tofu and he enjoyed it. The tofu sheets were thin and allowed the carrot and mushroom flavor to come through. Kung Po French cod fillet with cashew nuts: It reminded me of Panda Express fried food with sweet and sour sauce. Dining companions LOVED this. Fried Green Beans with Ground Pork: They were fried with chili sauce and was a nice accompaniment to the main dish of fried cod. I didn't drink but everyone loved their drinks, the best thing was the amazing view. I am sure they made the restaurant quite dark so diners can enjoy the view. This was our 2nd time visiting this restaurant, and it lived up to our expectations, again!! We arrived early (6pm) so that we would be sure to get a window seat, looking out over the harbor to enjoy the light show that starts around 8pm. Food: I'm a fan of Americanized Chinese food, and our meal at Hutong reminded me of just that (in the best way!). The shredded crispy beef was basically like eating candied chips (deeeeelicious!), the sichuan fried chicken wasn't overly mouth-numbing, and the string beans with pork were very well-seasoned. The dan dan noodles were a disappointment, though. Though I appreciated that the restaurant split the portion for my husband and me into two cute little bowls without my having to ask, the noodles were relatively tasteless and were barely lukewarm. I would also skip the lychee sorbet with fruit dessert. Though the fruits were ripe, the lychee was canned and the scoop of sorbet is about the size of a ping pong. Atmosphere: There are few places with views to rival those of Hutong! A table by the window is a definite treat - the darkness of the restaurant highlights the skyline very well. The decor is a little cheesy - trying very hard to appear old-world Chinese - but it's aesthetically pleasing. Service: Great! We were a party of 13 for dinner and our host had booked the VIP room with panoramic views of the Victoria harbor and had chosen the pre-set menu for HK$ 998 (`US$ 125). When you enter the restaurant, the views are stunning. Gets even better in the private room with panoramic views. Food is Traditional Northern Chinese and the ambience was good. It was dimly lit for dinner so couldn't observe the traditional deco. Service was very good. Food was fine but I didn't leave with the WOW factor. Being vegetarian, the spread was good but nothing noteworthy. I don't recall my colleagues eating meat wowed by the dishes either. Overall, a pleasant experience with great views. Stir fried string bean with chili and green asparagus coated with white sesame stood out. The string bean was crispy with the right amount of chili and was probably the best dish in the vegetarian menu. One of my favorite places to eat in Asia - even after eating at 2 Michelin starred places like Tin Lung Heen & RyuGin Taipei. This place definitely feels a bit more westernized, but done well. What sets this place apart is a vast 18 dish brunch experience of a broad range of reasonably high quality dishes at $63 USD. At this price point, this place easily outclasses any competitors with superior tastes such as Black Truffled Abalone or dried chili soft shelled crab, as well as superior quantity of food (there is A LOT). There is an emphasis on umami in each of the dishes, with generous portions of boldly flavored meat in almost every dish (Black truffles beef with Yunnan mushrooms, garlic chili pork belly, duck spring rolls, scallop & crab roe siu mai). It is evident that each of the dishes was very thoughtfully prepared and presented. There is also a popular bottomless champagne option at $25 USD that many other patrons seemed to love, though I cannot comment on quality. The restaurant itself sits on the 28th floor and offers a beautiful, wide panoramic view of the harbor (ask for a window seat!). The service is prompt and excellent, and there is daily event (mine was a live egg roll making demonstration that was a hit for the kids). The atmosphere and view here are undeniably gorgeous - with decor evocative of a traditional Beijing courtyard and a stunning view of the Hong Kong skyline 30 floors above ground, it's no surprise that Hutong ranks as a top contender for wooing out-of-town guests. With the exception of a few, it was difficult to discern the dishes from Chinese takeouts in the States. What I liked: Jade bamboo shoots - light and refreshing starter "Wu nan" Cod, aka cod filet with crispy fermented bean and chili - this was delicious, fish succulent and perfectly cooked Spicy minced pork with string beans - really good Average dishes: Pork belly with cucumber & garlic - a Chinese classic, nicely done but nothing special. Sichuan pepper prawns - quite spicy Hutong dessert platter - nicely arranged puddings with mashed taro pancakes and fried apple rolls What I'd avoid: Razor clams - very meh and not really "Pekinese" so to speak. Chicken fried with chili-soy - over-fried and dry Sliced beef with sweet and vinegar sauce - same and a bit hard to chew Seafood fried rice - the plain Jane of the night that was actually way too salty. I could still feel the grains of sea salt grinding against my teeth With that said, I have no doubt that there are some other amazing dishes on the menu, so don't rule this place out for a date night or special meal. Beautiful location and setting on the Kowloon side with views of HK island and the lights at sunset. Interior has cool modern yet historical vibe. Including the bathroom which was very dark with cools doors and sink. Service was excellent and we started with a nice white wine. Our server suggested we order more than the three dishes so we added on a fourth. It was way too much food. We got the chicken braised in Chinese wine but could only eat one bite bc so full. Nice tableside fire show with that one. And believe it or not it was more delicious the next day as leftovers. Also my fave veggie bite of my entire HK trip was their "kale" which actually turned out to be choi sum stems I think and super duper crunchy and delicious and more delicious the next day too. Got the deep fried eggplant at servers guidance which was fine but not super special. And the razor clams had a slight spice and tang and also lots of green onions. Super delicious. No leftovers on that one. It was pricey about $200 but you're not only paying for the food which was delicious but also for the ambience and views. It was a special treat. read more

We tried the foie gras, soft shell crab, wagu beef fried rice, jade bamboo, scallop spring rolls, and a lot of beer. The soft shell crab was one of the best soft shell crab dishes I've ever had, I'd return just for that. Not to mention, THE VIEW!!!!! We went for the brunch deal here which was advertised as the first free flow Chinese tea cocktail and champagne buffet. We enjoyed the view immensely but as for the actual food, specifically the "main courses", we were saddened to see it didn't live up to expectations. It was all very, very average. Belonging to the Aqua Asia Group, Hutong is usually spoken of positively, and my sister swears by this place for friends visiting Hong Kong. To their credit, I always assume brunches are going to have food of a lesser quality than the actual a la carte lunch and dinner menus, but when you have titans like Zuma and Blue Butcher successfully executing the brunch-show in Hong Kong, you should only play the game if you know how to score. The 'Chinese tea cocktails' were a gimmick more than anything else, dousing each barely-infused tea mixer with a couple of gold leaves for show. A and I stuck to good ol' champagne for the rest of the meal after this so I'm afraid I can't tell you more. Other novelty factors included the Kung Fu tea pouring ceremony, the man of many masks, and a noodle pulling show. All were quite fun to watch, and did well to distract me from my food. For the buffet dishes, the selection was somewhat limited - there were three varieties of dumpling: lamb dumplings, spicy pork dumplings, and xiao long bao. All of these had slightly too thick skin to be commended, but the xiao long bao had a nice warm burst of porky broth which I did enjoy. Besides the dumplings, it was mostly Chinese vegetarian dishes, but I loved the braised tofu and shitake mushrooms. Other nice (meat) dishes were the pork slices with cucumber slices and a drizzle of oyster sauce; spicy deep fried shrimp with Sichuan peppercorns and fermented chilis; shredded silky chicken; and shrimp cakes. Unfortunately, many of these were too spicy for A to handle, and the flavours didn't blow me away. But the main courses were straight-up underwhelming. We went for the pork belly and beef option, after seeing that anything good - lobster and abalone, mainly - meant you needed to add another couple hundred to the bill. The 'pork belly' was really just thin slithers of Chinese bacon wrapped around a vegetable, I forget which. The beef was also not what we expected, and had a rather strange mouthfeel- it was rather hard but mushy at the same time. In all, I'd probably avoid brunches at Hutong anytime soon, but I've heard many good things about their dinner service so wouldn't pass up the chance to visit again. I feel like the whole brunch was geared very much towards tourists, especially with the performances. As far as the daytime dining goes, I'd get my brunch on elsewhere. read more

I travel to Hong Kong often, but for my honeymoon I wanted to book one special dinner and go somewhere, I had not gone before. Hutong is supposed to be one of the highest rated Chinese restaurants in the area, with a beautiful setting. We knew there was a $65 minimum per person, but that wasn't an issue we thought about. We knew it would be a pricier restaurant, again, not something we were worried about. But, if you want to have a full meal, then plan to dish out lots of cash. To put things in perspective. We ordered two cocktails, one appetizer (which was 8 pieces of asparagus) and two "entrees" and the bill was right under $300 USD. And when I say "entrees" I don't even mean a full plate with meat, veggies, and rice. It only came with the meat we ordered, having rice and vegetables was extra. I understand that some styles are to order each piece of the meal individually but at the price point of their food, you are looking at a massive bill. We also were not impressed with the service. They seemed to be trying to rush us (even though they told us our entree would take 45 minutes). They knew ahead of time it was our honeymoon, and eventually offered us two glasses of champagne. If you go, I would suggest booking a time towards the end of sunset, and try to catch the light show. That would make it worth it. read more

With that said, we had a fantastic meal and managed to make reservations that timed perfectly with the 8pm Harbor lights show. Really cool environment; even the bathrooms were remarkable! The view and the food are f**king fantastic, if you were on a international date with somebody I would bring them to Hutong. It's literally a panty dropper kind of place. The food is beyond fantastic and it offers stuff like pigeon which was epic by the way. Beware of the spice level at Hutong because spicy means spicy like crazy spicy, hot. I pride myself in eating hot stuff but this has been the only restaurant in the world that has knocked me out. My mouth was on fire and I could no longer eat luckily it was after a few dishes of food. Service is top notch and they have a large assortment of fine wines. Overall: A Hong Kong must! Tips: I got lost finding the place because it's in a sky rise building and it has a few elevators. So make sure to take the right one up and make reservations. Come for the view, stay for the food. While Hutong is not a place for an everyday meal it is a fabulous place to celebrate a special occasion or to take visiting friends for that "postcard" view of the Hong Kong skyline at night. It is particularly fun if you can plan to have your dinner overlap the nightly Symphony of Lights show (8pm). Make sure that you request a table by the window when you make your booking, preferably around a week out as these tend to fill up quickly. And there's no wonder why, the view is perhaps the most spectacular in the city for watching the light show and the skyline. They also do a fun noodle-pull show at around 9pm, which is typically a hit with diners (lots of cellphone video and photos). The view and entertainment aside, Hutong also delivers an excellent dining experience, from the food to the service. The wait staff is extremely attentive and friendly, and always happy to recommend a dish if you are having trouble deciding what to order. The food is also pretty universally good; I can't recall a dish that I outright didn't like, and there are several standouts that I return for. Chief among them is the Boneless Crispy Duck, which is sort of a deep-fried take on Peking Duck. Rather than going through the lengthy preparation for Peking Duck, this duck is deboned, fried until the skin is crisp and delicious (while making sure the meat is still tender) and served with pancakes, plum sauce and thinly-cut scallions. Yum! The Sweet and Sour Mandarin Fish and the Beef Tenderloin with Rice Cakes are also memorable. And, although lotus root is not my thing, my wife absolutely lives their fried lotus root dish, so I would be remiss if I failed to mention that. I really struggled between 4 and 5 stars for Hutong, and feel a little guilty only rating them 4 since we have had so many wonderful and memorable meals there. However, the price point was the final factor. Although I will certainly continue to return with visitors, the view is spectacular and the food is consistently quite good, I just could not bring myself to give 5 stars to a restaurant where the bill makes me sweat nearly as much as the well-crafted Sichuan cuisine. It's not that I'm opposed to paying for quality and location, I just think the price can be a bit out of sync with an admittedly excellent experience. read more

When I arrived at this restaurant, I was disorientated a little by the amazing view that overlooks Hong Kong Island and its beautiful buildings. I was not prepared for this breathtaking view and authentic elegant Chinese decors. Definitely the view is a selling point at this time but the ambiance also adds to the whole dinning experience. As expected, this is not the most authentic Chinese food in Hong Kong. This is a place for a fancy evening with good Chinese food. The food here largely "modified" to fit foreign tastes and flavors. I take it as "modernized" Chinese flavors. For example, we had their salt and pepper crabs. It was great taste but seasoned with lots of black peppers. I loved the flavor yet it wasn't the most authentic way to cook crabs. Overall, I would recommend here for mostly a tourist attraction, enjoying the unbelievable view and the light show at 8 pm. Otherwise, food here is okay. Service is pretty good. You certainly pay the price for this astonishing view. read more

Fantastic food and service! Great view of the Hong Kong skyline as well. Lamb dumplings are a must as well as the beef skewers! Chicken with chilis is also a good item. Mojito's here are on point! Walked in early and we were able to get a table right away. I highly recommend to anyone from out of town (We're from New York City!) You wont be disappointed! read more

Tourist trap! The only good thing in this restaurant is the view. Food was mediocre at best and service was sub par.

Excellent food. American Express Platinum booked our dinner here at the last minute, we wanted to see the symphony of lights. The service was good, not great, but good. There was a noodle show that was pretty cool. read more

This review is long overdue but the experience memorable. The view of Hong Kong is spectacular from this restaurant. Loved the chic ambiance of this restaurant. We enjoyed watching the demonstration from one of their sous chefs making fresh long noodles for our soup. The ribs were delicious and the service excellent. The good -- great views, inventive cocktail list. The bad -- ridiculously overpriced, food mediocre. This is a view restaurant, and as with all view restaurants everywhere in the world, the views will be great, the prices will be lofty, and the food unremarkable. Hutong does not disappoint. The views are great, prices match the height of the building, and although the portions will NOT leave you hungry, any street food anywhere in Central will be an improvement over what you eat here. We ate there a couple weeks ago. Four cocktails, a couple bottle of water, and two of the tasting menus set up back US $400. Save your money. Admire the view from your hotel room and go eat elsewhere! read more

We went to the craft cocktail bar on the top floor called Aqua Spirit for pre dinner cocktails and the experience was great. The ambiance and service was great, as well as the cocktails. I had a classic cocktail and I believe you can best gauge the skills of a bartender by how they make a classic cocktail. It was spot on. The view of Central Hong Kong and the bay is amazing. After our drink, we went down one floor to Hutong, (No stair access and the elevators can get pretty backed up) Hutong had the same amazing view, but he decor was more classic Chinese with a good amount of bamboo. We were sat immediately at a table right in front of the window. The seats were really uncomfortable made out of bamboo and very hard to adjust. We actually had to change chairs to different wooden ones. The service started off on point as we were greeted right away. We asked for bottled water as we looked over the menu. It must have been 8 minutes till we had to ask our server for the water and his reply was, "Oh, you didn't receive it yet." Thank you captain obvious as you can clearly see there is no water on the table. We finally received the water and waited another 10 minutes till my wife had to flag our server down to place our order. We ordered the duck which came cold as well as the rice. We might be spoiled as Decoy NYC has the best duck we've ever had. The food was sub par from what you would expect from a restaurant with that kind of view. The bathroom was weird as it felt as though you walked outside. The bathroom was not clean or well taken care of. I was told in my early years of hospitality management that one of the most important things is a clean and well maintained bathroom. This was not the case. All in all, I would skip this restaurant and probably stay up at Aqua Spirit as they also serve food. read more
