I grabbed dinner here with a family friend who was a regular here, so my experience may have been even better than what most people would be used to. By regular, I mean the waitresses and the family friend were comfortable enough to roast each other and exchange wisecracks... you have been warned.
San Xi Lou, within Coda Plaza at least, has divided and conquered numerous floors in the building, and I have a theory as to why: their food is great!
Sichuan cuisine over the past century, seems to have garnered global adoration and this place keeps it going. San Xi Lou offers both Sichuan hotpot as well as cooked dishes from the kitchen. Because I generally don't like hotpot (I'm kind of lazy and find hotpot tedious and boring- I'm the odd one, most people love it), we went for dishes from the kitchen. What subsequently ensued was a sensational density experience of spiciness and sour broth-y goodness as I took on the 水煮鱼 (fish served in a sour soup with red, green and raw black chili peppers, fish, and some noodles (I think they were udon). If you only have a moderate tolerance for spice like me, DO NOT even try to eat the raw black pepper; don't let it even touch your mouth. I accidentally buy a fragment of it and it set my mouth on fire for 8 minutes, giving rise to a agonizing albeit entertaining display of me hyperventilating and scrambling to cool my water down enough to drink it. My sadistic family definitely enjoyed the 'show'. I continued eating afterwards, without incident.
They also make a really good lamb stew, where the lamb was tender and juicy, and came with a really tasty sauce. NOTE: you can choose to have a non-spicy version this dish. We ordered that, and it was good!
Of all places in Hong Kong where you can get 叉燒 (BBQ Pork), this place oddly enough actually serves it, and they did a remarkably good job at it too. We only stumbled upon it because we were stumped on ideas for what else we could order, and our awesome/sassy waiter said "try the 叉燒 we do it better than [some fancy Cantonese restaurant that my family friend also adores]). We proceeded to order it and were very surprised that she was right. The pork was juicy, fragrant, tender, flavourful and even had the has that nice mildly crunchy crust surrounding the outer edges of 叉燒 that you'd only expect from the finest of Chinese restaurants.
I should eat here more often, at the expense of my throat, and complexion. Maybe I'll see the family friend more and eat here to always get an awesome dining experience... or not. If they've done so well, I'd expect that they take quality and consistency very seriously. read more
