Known for quality food and clean interiors, this location did the same as well. The interior was very clean and the service was very good. Vegan Medu Vada - this was the least liked item for us. The Medu Vada, seemed very small for SB and looked as it was made by novice rather than an experienced chef. The MVs are normally much bigger and perfectly round and equal batter all around. Just one chutney and very little sambhar didn't help. The Vegan Rava Masala Dosa was better. Nice crisp dosa overfilled with Potato and Onion masala. The three chutneys and sambhar (less qty.) was good. The mostly Vegan North Indian Thaali was good as well. The curries to the point. The curries had a South Indian touch though, which is OK. The cauliflower 65 pakora was the best and super crunchy.

The hubster got his staple at any South Indian restaurant, which was a rava masala dosa. An uttapam for the child, which seemed slightly undercooked in the center. Good chutneys, especially the tomato one, which was a bit different, more gingery (works too well for me). The idli was soft, not as white and the vada, great. And their sambhar has always been good consistency, good taste, between New York and here. Lots of more photos and details on my blogs. Going to find a curry restaurant in Chungking can be quite daunting with all the people outside…read morevying for your attention. Luckily I was introduced to this place by a friend and it has been my regular curry place for the four years I have been in Hong Kong. If you are new to this place, the best thing to do is when you walk up to the entrance to Chungking and just say Taj Mahal. Their rep will then lead you to the right elevators and will usually give you a VIP card (if they don't then ask as it will give you 10% discount). If the lift takes forever, you can take the stairs as it is only on the third floor. Right, on to the food! You will be seated and given some popadoms to munch on while you look at the menu. There are so many options! If you aren't sure what to order then they can give you recommendations. Personally I love the Chicken Tikka Makhani and the Chicken Korma as I need a milder curry. Their samosas are brilliant and the tikka meat platter is delish! If you are with a group then they can also do a few deals for you with mixed curries, rice, naan, etc for a really good price. The family that runs it are super friendly and if you go a few times they will remember you. Also, order Mango Lassi! They are the best!!

The butter chicken was thick and had a very good taste for the first couple of bites before becoming salty. It was this saltiness that originally made me rate the restaurant as a 3; this and the lack of banana flavor in the banana lassi. I bumped it up to a 4 when the waiter explained the excess seasoning. He stated that the additional seasoning is to compliment the lack of seasoning of the rice, of which I did not order.

For all the Indian restaurants in Kowloon (#1), Gaylord is among the longest standing in the TST…read morearea. Known as "爵樂" (zoek lok) for the local crowd, they're regarded as a legit option for indian fare. I've been a patron for the better part of the last couple of decades, enjoying their food and overall ambiance. The best way I could describe the ambiance is classy but old school. There is ample seating for HK standards, with comfortable booths, clean bathrooms, and an overall nice decor. Service is usually exceptional: polite, professional, and super accommodating. I personally feel this is their strongest asset. I'm not mad at the food, which is most definitely solid. The presentation is on point and I'd reserve that mainly for their a la carte dishes. The pani puri is fun with the drink, the tandoori chicken is very hearty, and their mixed grill consisting of several kebabs is a treat. I also enjoy their sag paneer, chana masala, and dum aloo. One thing I've always loved is their lunch buffet. Despite being a city filled with numerous indian options (#2), only a handful will offer an all you can eat experience. Their setup changes daily, but I've always enjoyed it. I really liked their veggie pakoras, keema, and paneer anything options. I didn't love their chutneys, garlic naan, or navaratan korma, but one can't win them all. On certain days they have live music here, which is usually traditional music with live vocals with a bhangra dhol + mini drum set. The sound is legit, and a gamechanger + super fun element to their popular dining program. __________ (#1) And trust me, there's a lot. Desi life in Kowloon is serious. (#2) As well as buffets in general.

I was adventuring with my once-a-week-veggie friend again, and so we sampled many a veggie option. We had a vegetable pakora to start with, which was so so. Moving onto the delicious curries - paneer massala, paneer makhani and a mock duck makhankan (I think that's how it's spelt). The mock duck took home the best of show prize. Delicious, flavoursome and spicy. We complimented this with a couple of butter and garlic naans and my all time favourite palaki pullao; pilau rice and spinach. Honestly. It. Is. Devine. The meat eaters ordered a mixed tandoori to satiate our protein requirements. I wasn't blown away. On the whole, there are some delicious dishes here, but you need to know what they are. It's a great restaurant and I will be back and reorder different items to find the perfect Monday curry combination! Oh, and I booked through openrice which gave us a nice 15% discount when the bill came round. Who doesn't love a little discount!
