Kam Wah Cafe is also famous for their freshly baked Pineapple Bun and Butter. Can't start your day without some HK Milk Tea and Iced Ovaltine. My son said it's a good thing the nai cha in the states are not as good because he was starting to develop an addiction. Lol. For those of you who don't know, it's made with Ceylon leaves, evaporated milk and sweetened condensed milk. The French toast was so damn delicious but a bit indulgent. I do wish I could taste more of the peanuts. My son loved his bolo bao. We also shared a hot bowl of macaroni soup with Spam and lettuce. Thinking back, I regret not trying the Spicy Satay Beef Instant Noodle. I will have to look for this back in the states. The aunties working here are just the most adorable, very kind and welcoming. One of them took the time to help us navigate the huge menu and recommended a few items. I would come back again and again if I could. I have a mad love for these iconic HK Style Cafes aka Cha Chaan Tengs. These affordable quick-paced restaurants were influenced by the city's 150 years of British rule. Aside from the classic breakfast items, they also offer many delicious rice and noodle dishes in the afternoon.

The food just hit the spot for me, bringing me right back to my childhood memories of eating this on weekend mornings at our local HK cafe. Both were soooo good, hot or cold. I don't think the macaroni/ham soup or the egg ham toast were anything special, and would not bother ordering these again. The place is super popular, but the line moves quick. You may be seated with strangers at the same table (seems to be common practice in busy HK restaurants). Service was questionable, but I also saw a video online that they are purposely (& famously?) rude to the customers. What made me laugh was that we had barely sat down (my butt touched the seat for 0.1 second) and the waiter already wanted our order. When we said we needed extra time to go over the menu first, we got a bit of a death stare from the waiter. Their concept seems to be "come in, eat right away, and get the hell out!" I had been forewarned by my friend about the service here though, so I wasn't surprised. I'd still come again just for the pudding.

One thing to keep in mind, you might need to share table with other customers. I ordered the classic meal, macaroni with soup and ham, with scramble eggs, and buttered bread on the side. I ordered the French toast with peanut butter while hubby ordered a bolo bao with butter. The bolo bao came really fast while the French toast took a while longer. It was so rich, creamy, and smooth. Honestly made me feel a little jittery though because the tea was pretty strong. Service here was so so. The ladies working were rushing us to order which was understandable since they were so busy. Don't expect to sit and have a nice chat after you're done eating though because they will shoo you out.

This place is a little hard to find because you have to walk all the way to the end of a street with a dead end and it's hidden in the corner. The restaurant itself is clean and spacious. The service was pretty good by Hong Kong standards. I ordered the scramble eggs with BBQ pork over rice and it came out in less than ten minutes! The dish looked amazing and the portion was pretty big, although I had no trouble finishing the whole thing. Hong Kong's scrambled eggs are on some other level. This spot makes them runny, and although I usually don't like my eggs runny, they tasted pretty amazing here. Doused with sweet, light soy sauce and succulent pieces of famous Chinese BBQ pork on a bed of rice, this was definitely one of the most comforting and satisfying meals here. Definitely give it a try if you're in the area! I have a new love for scrambled eggs :)

The creamy chicken macaroni soup with ham and abalone strips (and side of soft eggs with toast) made me feel like a kid again. The beef and egg sandwich, and spam and egg sandwich were exactly as expected; they came out hot and fast and in generous portions. Drinks were great too, especially the lemon tea served with real citrus slices (both hot and iced were solid), and the milk tea was as authentic as it gets. Value felt fair for the area. From the menu, tea/breakfast-style sets sit around HK$40-46, lunch plates are roughly HK$52-64, and most drinks are in the HK$18-24 range (with a few around HK$26-28), so you can order a full spread without the bill getting out of hand. Good to know: they only accept cash and Octopus, so don't count on credit cards. Overall, an easy 4 stars for a dependable, grounding first stop.

It's communal seating, so don't be surprised if you're sitting with other people. I like that this place has a napkin dispenser, which a lot of restaurants in Hong Kong don't give you napkins. It's great cold too. Their rice crepes aren't too bad either. I like the sesame and sweet sauce they provide you on your table. Each time I've been here, it's been with my parents so they usually speak to them/my sparse Cantonese had gotten me by, not too sure if they speak too much English here. Go all the way to the back. They really try hard to lose you.... The interior is very classic HK style with tiles, a bit cramped. I kept following the GPS and at one point got so irritated because it said I arrived. Looked north, south, east, west-- arrived where?! After 10 minutes of walking I passed by a building and what do you know, it had Lan Fong Yuen and a bunch of other restaurants listed with their respective suite numbers. And of course, it was a completely different location from the one I've been to before. It was great though because I actually got to sit in and order some food this time. Place looks like a retro, older cafe that you see in TVB dramas. It is definitely more spacious than other places in Hong Kong so plently of seats available. Servers do speak some English to where communicating and ordering wasn't a problem. I also appreciate how there was a menu with photos! It always help to have visuals for people not familiar with certain dishes. Anyhow, we ordered the classic iced milk tea, crisp bun with butter, and thick toast. The crisp bun did come out burnt on the edges, which was a little offputting when it first got set on the table. But it did not taste burnt or affected the taste in anyway. I preferred the thick toast a little more, I think it's just overall texture of it being more soft and perhaps visually more appealing. My parents said they liked the bun more though. What I found was really sweet was one of the ladies was walking around, kind of paused for a bit before coming up to our table and pointed the syrup and signaled for us to pour it onto the toast. After we did it she smiled and gave a thumbs up. She knew we were foreigners and not knowing how to properly eat it and wanted to help us despite the language barrier. It shows that LFY really does care and want the best experience for their customers. Because you know, not many will do what she did. Having the mentality of "not my business, why should I care?" Or "I'm not the owner/manager, it's not my responsibility" (I'm pretty sure she wasn't as she was in uniform and in Asian cultures, usually the person at the register is the person in charge) I think that experience will stick with me for a lifetime. Oh and how could I end the review without my beloved iced milk tea! It tasted as wonderful as expected, not too bitter and not too sweet. It came out with the restaurant's cup and not the plastic to go ones with their signature. I was a little disappointed because now I won't have a pretty Instagram shot. I know, first world problems. But I saw a table with those cups so I think my feelings are justified. After finishing everything, I had ordered another iced milk tea to go so that solved my issue. As I'm writing this, I really want some LFY now. Well, till next time Hong Kong!
