Ended my latest trip to Hong Kong with a meal at Ippudo! Located in the Telford Plaza in Kowloon…read moreBay, it's very easy to find as it's in a hallway with a ton of Japanese restaurants. There's a electronic ticket machine in the front where you get a waiting number (and optionally, you can leave a phone number and they will call you when it's time). I was about 7 spots behind was seated in about 10 minutes. Of course I couldn't pass on the ramen in Ippudo. On the menu I noticed they had half portion options for the Shiromaru and Akamaru options, so I opted to try one of each ($42 HKD Shiromaru 1/2, $45 HKD Akamaru 1/2), and it was a fantastic decision. The broths were definitely the highlight. The shiromaru had a lighter broth where you can really taste the pork flavors from the tonkotsu broth. The akamaru had some black garlic oil, as well as a more spicy kick that wasn't too overpowering but transformed the tonkotsu broth into a more vibrant, powerful flavor. And eating them right after the other was a perfect yin and yang combination. The chashu was flavorful and had a good amount of pork fat but they were very thin slices and not a whole lot of meat. The texture of the noodles was good: thin but springy. Combined with the green onions, bean sprouts, and kikurage, it was very delicious. Portions are a bit on the small size (especially the 1/2 size options) but well worth the price. Highly, highly recommended!

This includes some new restaurants including the Ippudo. It originally is from Japan and has outlets meanwhile all over the world. The branch at Telford is bright, big and nicely decorated. Service is attentive and efficient. They have a lot of different food to offer, it's not all about Ramen. You can also get some deep fried items, stone pot dishes as well as salads. After 3 p.m. you even get grilled skewers. Ramen you can get in all kinds of variations, different noodles, ingredients and broths. The Ramen is al Dente and the broths I tasted yummy. The deep fried items are crispy, juicy and not oily at all. The salads are fresh and the dressing not overpowering. Try the fried rice as well, it is really good. Overall I found this Ippudo worth returning to. And it's good value for money. You can easily pay less than HK$ 90 per head.

While we waited, we see a big cloth hanging that tells you the restaurant is from Japan's Michelin Recommended Takano. The kids meal was the most impressive. They ate well that night! They got a small bowl of yummy ramen, delicious fried fish cake, gyozas, salad, and a strawberry cream waffle dessert AND a Yakult which they loved. All for HKD$92. The Aguni Island Salt Ramen we ordered was full of flavor and quality ingredients - the staff said this was the ramen with the lighter broth. Finally the Tsukemen that arrived last was just OK to us. The ramen was much thicker, and served slightly cold; best part of the dish was the dipping soup which had tasty protein in it, but I would stick to getting their ramen in the future. Apparently all their ramen are handmade. The service was slow so be ready for that. The kids meals came out first and the adult's ramen came 10-15min later and we were so hungry the adults started eating off the kids' plates. The Tsukemen took so long to come out I had to follow up with the staff if they've forgotten the order, but they hadn't... it just took that long.

Soup was great (almost finished it all) and the ramen was firm. The egg was cooked about right. This place is one of my favourite spots now because they have a wide selection of ramen. I really wanted to try their limited edition sake kasu ( only makes 5 bowls a day) but I was craving for seafood. Paid $155 for it which compared to other places it is a bit expensive but can't complain. Service was quick because I guess we were the only ones there. It's not their most recommended ramen, but it's still pretty delicious, especially their Pork. It just so soft. Mm... What I like most about this shop is that they're not joking around with their spicy level. For the noodle that I ordered it comes with their "Jigoku sauce" meaning "Hell sauce", it ranges from 0.5 to 3. Most people should be able to handle 0.5 spicy. Level 1 spicy kicks it up a notch where you kind of can handle it, but you'd need to drink more water. If you got level 3 spicy, you'd probably have a stomach ache from it's spicy content. I'm probably overreacting, but you could try it out yourself.

We actually wanted to go somewhere else for lunch, but the place we wanted is full and we didn't want to wait for such long line. When we were just standing there thinking, the manager waved at us and greet us to get in. Since we don't want to wait...why not. And I am so glad we did. We sat down and immediately greeted with waitress handing us teas WITH A SMILE. Already felt so welcomed and only took 5 mins to order our food. I had a ramen set lunch and my sister ordered a bento set lunch. 5-7 mins after ordering, the waitress came and fill us some more tea and told us "food will come out very soon and sorry for the wait" WITH A SMILE. I mean after that i'm just amazed! This customer service is UNREAL! They made us feel so important and welcomed (not even being extra cause remember this is in Hong Kong!!!). I don't even get as good customer service when I'm in the states where we actually tip them! Anyhow food is here (and please allow me to say she put it down gently and politely WITH A SMILE), it's not bad but also not the best. The ramen noodles is good - not too soft, not too dry, just the perfect texture. The ramen soup is not amazing, but not bad also. It's not something you would drink it all like the legit Japanese brand ramen place. But this is def good enough for a lunch especially it's quite a big portion. My sister's bento box lunch is good. Again, not the fancy Japanese legit place that you would be amazed how good it is, but it's a decent cheap lunch that fill you up. The bento box has more variety and you get a miso soup and the seaweed salad! I think that's already great. Annnnd here I am again telling you about the customer service since the food is not much to mention in this case! This time the manager came to fill our tea again WITH A SMILE and asked us "Is everything good and tasty?". I was seriously almost wanted to cry out loud because of how nice they all are to customers!!! (I thought) this level of service is not even considered in Hong Kong and a local mall like this one!!! THANK YOU!!! The whole experience was so great I can't help but to talk about it here. It's not great food, but it's surely the best service I've ever had in Hong Kong! And mind you I lived here for 18 years, so... Recommended if you just want a decent price, happy, very great service lunch (that might also made you finish lunch with a big smile). If you're thinking about amazing fancy ass food? Well, look somewhere else. I'm sooo going back there for lunches!!!

After having experienced hte…read morehooplah that was one of the most reviewed businesses in NYC's Ippudo (https://www.yelp.com/biz/ippudo-ny-new-york), it was only fitting I gave the HK version a fair shot. It's been a few shots now and for the most part, I've been content with all I've sampled. Ippudo might be in a household name in Asia, but the HK version certainly has its own specialties in what seems like a regionalized menu. There were a number of things I've never seen in NY or Japan but I suppose that's the beauty in visiting other franchise locations right? If only all global brands had this much variety. The prices are still $$$, but it's nice enough in here where people will still come rolling in. Firstly, the lobster ramen? This is likely seasonal and even a little weird. The lobster meat is tasty and while the presentation is on point, the broth does not complement the lobster at all. By retaining the shell, it forces the diner to eat both separately (i.e. removing the lobster and eating the noodles). Awkward sure, but HK'ers will definitely bite. Gone are also the hirata pork buns that have garnered a lot of fanfare and in their place, a vastly wimpier charsiu version that is a tad disappointing. They also have a happy hour that includes various skewers / izakaya pieces at discounted prices, along with frozen beer and a number of other items I've not seen in Ippudo before (scotch eggs anyone?). Someone tell the chef to relax on the chives for the gyoza ... they were practically buried in green. I still wouldn't put it past Ippudo to showcase some quality meals. The decor here is modern, the interior is clean, and the place is large enough to accommodate all kinds of party sizes. There is still the semi-cheesy Japanese welcomes from the staff, but I've actually encountered quite a few actual Japanese folks working here. And I've also seen a few of the HK'ers sleeping in the back room. Ippudo Corp: Your employees need a break.
