The station is conveniently located on the 3rd floor of the mall

New Town Plaza is probably my most-visited mall due to its proximity to my house. New Town Plaza is pretty easy to navigate, in my opinion, and it's quite well organized - for example, one section of the forth floor is all shoes and the fifth floor is devoted to sportswear. New Town Plaza itself is pretty big, and it's connected to a LOT of other smaller malls, like Citylink, Shatin Plaza, Yata etc - so just when you think you're done with it, you're really not. You can literally spend a whole day in the area and not get bored! New Town Plaza is great for both eating and shopping. No matter what your budget is, there's something for you. Don't want to spend more than $70 for lunch? The sixth floor has three inexpensive Japanese restaurants, or head to the first floor for a more varied fare. If you don't mind shelling out a little more, you can't go wrong with Lei Garden up on the sixth floor. As for shopping, there's everything from H&M and Zara to Club Monaco and Moschino. If you're really on a budget, go to nearby mall Citylink - the boutiques there are inexpensive but a lot of the clothes are tacky so you'll need time to browse, and there are a ton of cheap eats like Eurogogo and Fairwood. You can try Yata (also known as New Town Plaza Phase 3) too, a mid-range department store that's kind of like Apita over at Tai Koo Shing. As for grocery shopping, in order of most to least expensive, there's Citysuper, the Yata supermarket and Parknshop, which you can get to via a passageway near Agnes B on the third floor. The one bad thing about NTP is that it is always pretty crowded, especially on weekends and public holidays. It's a couple of train stops from the border so it's a popular place for mainlanders to come and shop at. Don't be surprised to see them wheeling in luggages and packing in their buys outside H&M. Besides this, NTP is a great place for shopping and I'd recommend it to anyone on this side of HK!

Shatin Centre has always been like the little brother to New Town Plaza- its much smaller, its on…read morethe side and the shops are just a little down market compared to the big boss. This contrast has been made even further lately with the major renovations at NTP where Armani, Buberry and Bally are all present in a place where people used to come to get pots and pans. This is the reality of the new Hong Kong I guess. Shatin Centre, despite its makeover, is still the neighbourhood shopping centre with the large number of small, non-chain stores. Here you will find old shoe shops (the ones where we used buy school shoes from- if you grew up here you know what I mean), small jewelers who don't cater for oligarchs like the major chain these days. There is also a disproportionate amount of personal care product retailers here which I can only presume is a strategy of the management company. You will also find fast food joints, and just cheaper restaurants as opposed to NTP nearby. When I was younger I didn't care for such things as NTP just seemed the cooler and nicer place to be. Nowadays though, all shopping centres are identical and as such, malls with little shops like this place makes for a more special experience. You don't have to fight with tourists (as much) here because the shops here are just too low brow for them. Which is just like for a skint like me.

The mall complex is actual a string of multiple malls that are connected between tunnels and bridge walkways. It actually has an entrance to my hotel which is beyond convenient if it decides to storm or the day is beyond humid [welcome to Hong Kong] The Mall is abundant in western high end brand and considering you haven't gone broke on paying rent on this city, you can shop to your heart's desire. Try not to get lost as this mall is HUGE. [9 stories - I'm still in search of the Lush store I saw it breiflly and haven't been able to find it again. I will be continuing to shop here in the next month.

Back in the day, Lucky Plaza was a seedy mall that sold everything from pirated video games to X…read morerated videos. When you went in there, there was the distinct smell of cigarettes lingering in the air and seeping from the inside of the mall. The shops were either empty or operated by people who you really don't want to mess with and the deeper you went inside the less desirable it became. Turn the clock forward to the modern day, the place has cleaned itself up big time. There are no smokers, no fake CDs- instead there is now a supermarket, some old shops have carried through the regeneration including some shops selling mobile phones and watches which have been here forever. The mall's focus is now less centralized than before, you have a lot of shops focused on ladies fashion, a number of stores that sells mobile and electronics and a number of pharmacies. This turnaround is such a big one that I trust anyone who came here in the old days probably couldn't recognize it now . Good riddance to the old days when I just thought this place was waiting to be taken apart and this regeneration has really breathed a new lease of life into the margin of the Shatin City Centre complex. Would I come here all the way to see it? No. If you live nearby though, this is a pretty good place to kill time.

Walking distance from New Town Plaza, Lucky Plaza is a little shopping mall that is home to many…read moresmall shops. There are no big names here (for that, head back to New Town Plaza!). Instead, the shops here are more so small, family-owned businesses - a very refreshing chain from the other internationalized and chain-dominating malls of HK. Lucky Plaza is not big - you can circle it in a couple of minutes if you try. My favorite thing to do here is to explore the 'locker shops'. This is a concept where the shop consists of multiple squares, each divided from one another, and the sets of items in each are different. Rent in HK is expensive, and sometimes, a store owner may not have that much to sell. These locker stores allow them to rent out a locker or two monthly to sell their items while not having to be physically present in the store. As a result, a locker store is basically a ton of shops within a shop. It may be surprising what you can find here! My most recent purchase from Lucky Plaza was actually a drinking game from one of the locker shops here - I thought it would make a fun gift for a friend's birthday, and it was pretty inexpensive! K-pop merchandise is very popular here, including posters, folders and even playing cards, with each card featuring a different photo of a Korean celebrity! If you're interested in scrap booking or other crafts, you'll be able to find a lot of nice materials for that too. There are about three or four of these locker shops and they are usually the main reason for me coming to Lucky Plaza. The clothing stores at Lucky Plaza are not so remarkable though - a lot of brightly colored oversized t-shirts or outfits that are just way over the top. There are one or two accessories shops that are worth checking out though. As for food, your dining options are pretty limited. Tam Zai (Yunan-style noodles) is not bad, but I'm not a fan of the other restaurants here. It's best to venture back to New Town Plaza where there are a lot more restaurants to choose from!

Perched right above the Sha Tin Station, Citylink Plaza is chocked full of small shops and…read morerestaurants. I come here more so to eat than to shop, as most of the boutiques are very Asian fashion inspired and not really my style, and the ones that are are a little expensive. Citylink is always packed around lunch hours, especially weekends. The restaurants aren't too expensive - you'll be spending quite a bit less than $100 per person if you're here for lunch, and there is quite the variety too. If you're looking for dimsum, Dimdimsum Dimsum (yes, that's its real name) is a great choice. The dimsum is all made-to-order and is extremely fresh, which makes up for the cramped environment and less-than-friendly service. Viet's Choice has all your Vietnamese cravings satisfied, and euro go go is great for a general western fare and is cheap too. And if you're really on the run, you can go for Fairwood. Speaking of which, there is a pretty big ladies' toilet opposite Fairwood that is always clean. For a quick drink fix, there's a Gong Cha stall too (right next to Fairwood). There are quite a couple of fashion and accessories boutiques here too - some are actually quite inexpensive, but the stuff isn't the most glamorous. The shops are all quite small, so it's a bit of a squeeze if you're here on a particularly crowded day. One of my favorite things about Citylink is the huge 759 store on the fourth floor. But do take note that the fourth floor isn't accessible by escalators so you'll have to go over to the office lifts.
