I've written a review for Curry Leaf in Las Vegas, so when we found this one just steps from our hotel here in Hong Kong, we just had to try it, though there's no relation between the two.
It's an attractive two-story restaurant, and we chose to eat downstairs, since there seemed to be a noisy party going on up top.
Hong Kong is touted as a very expensive city, and it is, but like other places, there are reasonably-priced places when you venture off the main drags, and this was one of them. I had a glass of white Bordeaux, a first for me, and it was a very large pour for about $5. Hubby has a Singha beer, also reasonable, served in a tall logo glass that I would have "gifted" myself were it not for stingy airline baggage charges.
Pappadum was complimentary, along with three dipping sauces. For our dinners, we ordered an eggplant and potato casserole, along with a chicken biryani. The casserole was excellent, but the large bowl of Raita that accompanied it tasted a little strange. The biryani rice was good, but not the chicken - all dark meat, with skin, fat and gristle. Having walked through some eyebrow-raising markets in Asia, I'm convinced that all the white meat chicken is exported far, far away. Garlic naan was good, but could have been a little less soggy.
We did enjoy a long political conversation with our waiter, aka Neo. Interaction with waitstaff always adds brownie points to our meals.
Overall we didn't pay more for our dinner than we would have at home, so four stars for a decent meal that won't break the bank, in pleasant surroundings. read more
