This hike is NOT for the weak, as you start off at the bottom and you climb up at an angle for at least 45-mins on a brisk pace. I was dying! But, like all things, the work put in is exponentially translated to the reward you get. As you travel higher and higher into the hike, you are blessed with incredible views of the city and the water. As you clear further into the hike, you are directed to this secluded quarry which seems like Hong Kong's best and worst kept secret. It is truly amazing and truly breathtaking. I was literally speechless. I took so many photos and filled my Instagram with all the gorgeous views. Thank God for my iPhone X whose camera technology was able to capture what it was like being there. In certain areas of the quarry, you get to see crystal clear water filled with schools of colorful fish. It instantly became one of my favorite places. I can't wait to return! Be prepared to sweat! Bring the appropriate shoes! And be prepared to be amazed!

They haven't reconstruct the entire place, but they did something with a part of it. This place is visited by a lot of people, and most enjoy having a picnic, or taking professional photos, or even just relaxing by the ocean or on the grass. There are also runners who go here because of how big this place is. It's a nice change of scenery, especially when you finally see a field of grass in Hong Kong on the Kowloon side. Besides the park, there is the Kai Tak Cruise Terminal. It's a massive building with shops and restaurants inside. It's not hard to miss this enormous structure. When you do go outside of the building on the upper floors, it's like a giant garden. A long, long, giant garden that you can stroll through or sit and take in the atmosphere. Even the inside of the restrooms are spacious and nice.

It can get crowded during the weekends and when the weather gets good. There are often gatherings for people with dogs to have their dogs play with each other. With the excruciating heat during summer in Hong Kong, it would be crazy to ask your friends 'hey! Let's go hiking this weekend!" Though I have to agree, do you know that Hong Kong in fact has one of the best hiking trails in the world and we are just not really appreciating it correctly. Lots of my foreign friends always wondered why is that locals here simply do not go hiking... Well... that's quite embarrassing as we might be taking the nature for granted. Regardless, I finally took up the courage and embraced with our great natural side of Hong Kong. As a matter of fact, Tai Lam Country Park is the second largest country park in the territory. I did not finish the entire trail (sorry I am just a spoiled city boy) but frankly speaking the scenery was just AMAZING. It is fairly difficult to find an idle and tranquil place in Hong Kong, so hiking to places like this is definitely perfect choice for all. Personally, I loved the Red leaves in Dai Tong during winter when it is less hot and the scene would make you feel like you are in one of those romantic Japanese TV shows where the guy and the girl meet.

As far as I know, taking the 82 minibus from Tsuen Wan is the easiest way of getting here. Because of the distance traveled and the limited seating, it's best to stand in line early, since the wait at the bus stop can be pretty long. Near the trailhead, there's a shop for snacks and drinks as well as public restrooms. There are a number of ways to go about your adventure. Since we were trying to get back before dark and avoid the next rainstorm, we covered Pineapple Dam and Waterside Paperbarks, extended a little past Shing Mun Reservoir Delta before turning around to check out Shing Mun Reservoir Main Dam. While there were a few stairs and some incline, the trail was mostly flat as well as well-kept and easy to traverse. Breaking away from the main loop, there were portions with gnarly trees, rocky boulders you can climb, and flatlands for day-camping. Another perk is that the wildlife around here roam freely. A herd of cattle were grazing near the reservoir's edge unbothered by passersby. A local troop of monkeys made their appearance, with a few more brazen than others. Word of advice: If you've got your phone in hand or any other small object, they might mistake it for food and lunge towards you, so maintain some distance. If you happen to have driven and parked in an area with monkeys, well...they might just make it their bed and scratch it up, perhaps even leave a dollop or two...We also chanced upon a kaleidoscope of butterflies along the way, many of which were uniquely patterned. Finally, there was a shared rest area completely occupied by a pack of dogs before they went on their way. Fun, fairly straightforward, and not too physically demanding trail for most folks. For humidity and possible chance of rain, bring an umbrella, a water bottle, and change of clothes. Next time I'll try completing the entire loop.

There are other fishes and insects from nature to look at as well. In the butterfly garden, a speaker will explain to you the life of a butterfly and the features of them. But it is in Cantonese only. Must bring Hat, sunscreen and mosquito repellent! srsly I got bitten even with mosquito repellent on.

If I hadn't worked in Yuen Long, I'm not sure I would've ever heard of the Wetland Park, which would have been a shame since the project site has been designed so well, architecturally and educationally. There's a butterfly garden, and a few trails that pass by mangroves, fishponds and streams - all seemingly miles away from the urban Hong Kong hustle and bustle. So, strap on your fanny packs, rock your sun visors, and dip in a bath of sun screen, because the Wetland Park is a day-trip of eco-friendly fun. Down with the 18 degree aircons! Well, down with the 18 degree aircons for a little bit: there's an indoor exhibition area, the Visitor Centre, where you can learn about animals that live in the wetlands - including Pui Pui the crocodile, who has a home at the Wetland Reserve. The viewing gallery also gives you a good view of the Wetland Reserve too from an indoor site. Admission is $30 for a standard ticket, while concessionary tickets are half price. The Park is a great place to take the kids, to get some fresh air, or to learn more about conservation in Hong Kong.

The park is clean and mostly frequented by the elderly. I saw very few younger people. It would have been nice if they allowed unique snack vendors. Since my primary school is right next to it, we would spend hours after school just to have a bit of fun at the park before heading home. Last week I went back there again and I was flabbergasted how it has changed. The lake we used to row boats on are completely drained out and the two of the entrances of badminton court have been blocked by potted plants (there goes my short-cut), luckily one thing that did not change is the mass of greenery. Another thing that surprised me was the crowd here, back then there were only some elderly chilling and doing Tai chi in the morning, now there are more street performers singing classical Chinese songs. This place has become more lively and vivid. (Yet I did read that there have been some kinds of prostitution targeting the elderly there going on lately) With the completion of the West rail and also the newly established V-City and the new residential area, I would not be shocked to see the growing number of people here. Sadly, the crowds also come with more rubbish and I was really disappointed to see the litters on the floor unfortunately. Regardless of the fact that most of the stuff I was familiar with about this place is gone, whenever I pass it by I can vividly recall where my hiding spot was during hide-and-seek; and I am glad that spot still exists, (which is a secret spot of course!)
