龜苓膏
Roger M.

I'm surprised that a place like this still exists in this part of Central when it's completely overtaken by tons of boutiques, bars and trendy restaurants. If you're looking for fresh sugarcane juice, this is it! They make everything fresh with the old school juicing machine that squeezes every last drop of sugary goodness from those stalks. This is one of the best thirst quenchers you can find in the 852, especially during the excruciating heat and humidity. They also specialize in herbal turtle jelly (龜苓膏). They are one of the better tasting spots that seems to use a traditional recipe as other big chain spots in town have nothing but water down concoctions. This is one of the best things to have when you're "heaty (熱氣)" and is a great preventive for a hangover as well! Shoot, quench your thirst with some sugarcane juice and cool your body down with some good ole' turtle jelly.

It was full! I drank one big sip before I took the picture..

No-bullshit-traditional-local-fresh-sugarcane-juice. Well, I can pretty much end this review here. But hey, there's a reason why Kung Lee, such a local shop, can stand in the middle of Soho for such a long time. (To be fair, one of the main reasons is, they own the whole building so they are not prone to the crazy rent.) All the sugarcane juice are freshly made each day. You can see if the staff pressing the sugarcane into the machine, if you are lucky. Sugarcane juice, if you can't deduce that from its name already, is super doper sweet. You only want to drink it once awhile, either on a very hot and thirsty summer day to keep you hydrated, or a very cold winter day to keep your stomach warm. Anyway, since they don't add any artificial sugar, it's all healthy to you if you are not drinking in excess. If sugarcane juice is not enough for you, try their chrysanthemum tea, or better, their turtle jelly. I can't be sure if they actually use turtle shell powder at all, as many of the shops in town already replaced them with herbal additives that serve similar medicine purpose. It is very good for you healthy, and it's probably one of the only few shops here in Soho you can get turtle jelly. By the way, I never said it tastes good. If it's your first time and you think it tastes like the worse thing ever, you are probably right. But then I'll also recommend you to try so 24-herb tea too...

Must-try items include sugarcane water. Follow my Yelp if you love my Yelping & welcome everybody to ask me questions about Hong Kong.

What can I say? It specialises in sugarcane juices and is the best in Hong Kong. Unlike those sugarcane juices which got diluted, this one here is freshly squeezed from raw sugarcane without dilution. This could be a bit too sweet for some people but is guarenteed to be the richest. I struggle on whether it's a 4 or 5 stars and decided a 5 simply because this is the best. haha

One of the few things I make sure to never leave Hong Kong without doing at least once is having a…read moresip of the sweet coconut nectar from Coconut King. In the near decade since my last review, it has become one of my most frequented businesses and a rite of passage destination for all of my new-to-HK visitors. This was a must-visit for life in the street side foods of Kowloon. (#1) However, this last trip to HK I saw no lines and only one person working the stand. I came through Dundas on multiple occasions to see very little activity, making me wonder if this was the effects of the post-pandemic downtrodden economy, but alas I brought a group of friends and we ordered several drinks. The end result was it was nicely cold, but a tinge blander and less sweet than I had remembered. It was still refreshing, but the wow effect was gone. Before there were people behind the counter cracking open cans of coconut milk and the continuous mixing of drinks, but felt slow and the vibe was a downer. My friends didn't seem too impressed, which I understood why. The bottle prices are up 4HKD (now 30HKD) from the last decade, which is not as crazy as expected. Considering that they've recently expanded to Prince Edward earlier this year, I imagine the brand is doing well, despite it not feeling the same. I'll be back again soon, and while I anticipate another visit, it will be with much lesser expectations. ___________ (#1) Yai Ma Tei is the best.
