Vegetarian is available, and certificates of halal approval adorn the tiny walls. Tiny walls, tiny tables and tiny sheeshah too... during summer this is a great place to chill and snack after local exploration while waiting for the ferry home. For us as locals: it's a source of spicy and delicious salads at lunchtime and dinner. The salads are basically the fillings of kebabs turned out into a takeaway container: without the pita bread.

I ordered a tandoori chicken tikka. Which they did really well. The chicken was flavourful, yet it was still very succulent. They also make a good tomato soup and chai, so I was very pleased with the food quality overall. The naan is also very tender and as such, went very nicely with the curry that they served it with. I was however a bit surprised by the lack of parsley or coriander on the garlic naan, but otherwise, it was still very good. Service is attentive and helpful, and from my observations, also bilingual. Shaffis offers set menus and I'd recommend taking advantage of that.

The location of Shaffis, however, has everything to do with its history and why its ended up here. Shaffis' proprietor, Ali, had been an army cook for the British army at RAF Shek Kong prior to the handover. He had long been serving Indian dishes to the forces (a force tradition) and his name is well known beyond the walls of the barracks. To cut a long story short, he stayed on after the handover and started his own restaurant and where better than Yuen Long for an upstart restaurant. Some 17 years later now and this restaurant has its own following of fans. Those from the disciplinary forces have close ties as could be seen by the plaques lining its walls. The interior aside, Shaffis' tandoori chicken, tikka masala, aloo gobi are all staples that are enjoyed by many. Apart from the items mentioned, there is an extensive menu that will suit those who are looking for a true taste or would like something a little milder. All these dishes hover around the HKD60 mark, and are quite reasonable in size, so you will probably find your bill quite low. What is particularly good about this venue is that it is completely vegetarian, so you don't have to do the song and dance of, "can I have this, but without the bacon" or "is the stock made with chicken". And despite it being vegetarian, the food, being Indian, is very tasty and in some cases quite spicy! My only issue with the food, is that it can be a bit greasy. Everything seems to be liberally coated in vegetable oil, so just be wary. The venue itself is a bit like a canteen, with its bright fluorescent strip lighting, plastic tables (at least with table clothes I suppose), and school chairs. It could also do with having a good scrub and a lick of paint. However, I suppose we come for the food after all. The service is great, the staff are attentive and friendly, but there only seems to ever be one wait staff on. I do tend to come during the day when it is quieter and there aren't so many folks about, so I hope they add more wait staff in the evening when it gets busier. The mutton is simmered in what I would call an Indonesian stylet thin curry sauce that is fragrant, spicy and delightful. The bones stewed for hours adds to the richness of the broth that when mixed with the rice is a beautiful thing. And am I glad I did, what an experience it was! It cannot get any more local than this. The entry to the actual "food centre" or "hawker stall" almost seems exclusive, you'll have to trek through a fish market with wet floors all around without any yellow "Caution! Wet!" warning signs, up the desolate stairs with dirty white chef aprons and rubber boots hanging on the walls to dry, across a random connector hallway through the doors and into the food centre. My oh my, just the sheer number of people lining up for food or bunched together sharing dirty tables sitting on plastic chairs, is a marvel to see. What's more interesting about this place is, you don't have to adhere to the normal dining etiquette. It's so packed that to get any seating, you'd first have to scout around & spot a group that is almost done and stand right next to them & wait. Awkward? Yes. Necessary? Absolutely. This is not the end of it. So while we stood next to the table, waiting for the group to leave, they stuffed the last bits of protein in their mouths, sucked out all of the meat and juices from the bones, like a machine gun spat out the bones all on the table. They then got up and left, where we rushed to sit down before anybody robbed our seats. Did I mention proper dining etiquette is not required here? With a pile of bones and empty takeout boxes in front of us, we waited for the server to clean up. My brothers sat in disgust with hunger quickly turning to nausea. One swipe with a dirty towel is all the server needed to clean up, no disinfectant spray, nothing. Food stains and marks were still very much visible. I love it. The curry was just slightly spicy while the meat had a great chew, tiny bit of toughness as expected, but very fragrant, flavorful and distinct. The total for 3 came to $120 I think, which is ridiculously cheap given the quality of the food, hence the beauty of places like this. Fair warning, this place is not for the faint of heart.
