The supermarket stocks a good variety of both local and international products, and at cheaper prices than supermarkets like Great and Citysuper as well. One of my favorite things about the Yata supermarket is that they stock a lot of Japanese imported products, ranging from instant noodles to fruit jellies. The other day, I was walking around in the supermarket when I realized that I had a random craving for anchovies - you know, those tiny Japanese silver fish that usually come with almonds? Strange, I know, but I've always loved those. I walked over to the snack aisle, thinking that I would just grab it and go, but lo and behold - there was literally a section devoted to anchovies! There were so many to choose from but unfortunately I don't read Japanese so I couldn't make an informed choice. Anyway, I just went by instinct and compared the prices and grams in each to see which was more value for money. Fruit shopping at Yata is always an adventure. Last week, my mother and I managed to pick up the most gorgeous Japanese peaches for $32 each. Now, we all know peaches aren't the cheapest of all fruits, but $32 for a nice, big and juicy peach was a steal compared to other supermarkets! Unfortunately, the Yata supermarket is always quite crowded, making it hard to move through the aisles while pushing your trolley. Too many a times that my sandals-wearing feet have been rolled over by relentless trolley-pushers... My advice is to come at night when there's significantly less people, and that way, you can also take advantage of some items that have been marked down because the supermarket wants to get rid of them before the day ends!

You can find a variety of Japanese food products here, along with some other imported items as well. The dessert/cake section is quite extensive and there are multiple bakeries/desserteries. They have Japanese brands/companies but also a couple local ones as well. I tried their Japanese cheesecake tart place and it was quite good. The tart was fresh and warm. Their cakes are detail-oriented and glamorous like the ones you'd see at a department store in Tokyo. There's produce and meats sold here, but they're pretty pricey, as you can imagine. That week was their Taiwanese fair, so the market had an assortment of Taiwanese street food to eat. It can be super crowded here, so keep that in mind if you're not into crowds. But then, if you can't handle crowds, why are you in Hong Kong?

Case in point, it took me 6 months to discover SOGO's basement even though I lived, quite literally, next door. SOGO is a gigantic department store that attracts hordes of shoppers, many with luggage, every hour of every day. I knew all this, I saw the insane mass of limbs and luggage wheels every time I crossed the street. That's why i was deterred from going in until the last month of my stay. What I didn't know was that there was a food paradise tucked underneath all the people and the floors. The SOGO grocery store is similar to other high end grocery stores, but with a Japanese focus. Very clean, very large, and with many exotic varieties at a premium price point. There is an area in the middle that sells an assortment of Japanese snacks: dango, matcha tea, sun-dried squid, etc. To be honest, I never actually bought anything from the grocery store but I did go for SOGO's assortment of ready-to-eat food kiosks, all imported from Japan, all amazing. There's a quiche place with an array of the most beautiful quiches on display (fake, but still pretty), there's a cheese tart place (BAKE) that puts a dent in my heart and wallet because the tarts are so delicious and overpriced. There are Japanese sweets, Japanese cakes, and foreign snacks that a certain Japanese shop has repackaged for the Asian population. Beard Papa (cream puffs), Juchhheim (German layered cake), iCremeria (ice cream), Kobe Beef Meat Pie, all evil temptations for someone with an empty stomach. My favourite is Croissant Taiyaki (especially with apple filling): crispy, sugary, flaky pouches that marry French croissants and Japanese Taiyaki at HKD $18 a pop. Sinfully delicious. If you've never been here, drop by. If you're from North America, DEFINITELY MAKE A TRIP HERE. It's unlike anything I've ever seen (though I hear supermarkets like this are everywhere in Japan, lucky...) It may have been a blessing that I discovered it late in my time here in HK. So interesting to try to figure out what we were bringing back home. Surprised to see a shelf filled with American Old El Paso Taco Shells and seasoning and Cholula Hot Sauce. Of course, I found it! This place is equal to cross between Whole Foods and Bristol Farms in CA. You'll be sure to find exclusive items you can't find elsewhere. Of course, it comes with an equally impressive price tag. My Maldon Salt cost the same as it would had I gotten it from a specialty store in SoCal such as The Butchery. It is basically a small grocery store selling everything from instant noodles and tinned vegetables, through to wine and plastic decorations for various festivals. All of their produce you can get in Wellcome or PnS, but since it is no more expensive in "Oil and Rice", I try and support them as much as possible by shopping here. Of course, unlike the big boys, there is no Octopus, EPS, or credit cards. Cash only! However, what the lovely owners do above and beyond the big boys, is trays of chopped fresh fruit. If you are like me, you may find your self eating less fruit because you just can't be bothered to peel it. Being able to buy trays of fruit ready prepared is a good excuse to eat more! They are either packaged as individual fruits, or a selection of two or three. All the trays cost HKD20, so whilst more expensive that the individual fruit, not a lot to pay for the convenience. This is great during pomegranate season as no one wants to peel those things. Do give them a try, and support a small local business. The owners seem lovely, but then again I have never passed more than two words to them on 2 years, as they are politely shy!

I also love that they have lots of cut up fruits to choose from, which is convenient for tourists. The website said they open at 9am but they were already opened when I walked past at 8am. And they have applepay, which is not too common in HK. They are located in the basement level of Isquare and is only 1 level above the mtr station.

The other floor has more household products which I found them A-OK but did not wow me. For more selection, I suggest going to CSB or other bigger shopping centres. Probably best avoided on special 'festival' days (special shopping days for cardholders), but hard to know what those are until you rock up - and then can't move without jostling someone! The crush usually isn't so bad on the upper floors, ie away from the actual supermarket, so if you do get caught - my advice is 'in, up, out' as quickly as feasible.
