"just grateful it is there" kind of deal, and pricing is not outrageous given it's right in the heart of the city. if this one doesn't suit your shopping needs, there's a Wellcome 1.5 blocks away on Chatham Rd S.

And you'll know it because the store was practically empty on a weekend afternoon. The produce, beverage selection, prepared deli foods, and salad bar (if you can call it that) can't hold a candle to what you'll find at the Great Food Hall or City Super. Mind you, I do most of my grocery shopping at the Fusion store a quick walk away from my flat - and it's more than fine, though nothing special. I'd say that Gourmet is more of a 'regular' grocery store and less of a gourmet supermarket. Basically, it comes down to this: I'd have a difficult time leaving my neighborhood and making Gourmet a destination. Conversely, as long as my checking account gives me permission, I'm always happy to jump neighborhood ship to purchase special treats at the Great Food Hall or City Super.

I mean, it's location along Leighton Road makes it just a five-minute walk from Times Square, and it's got quite a good variety of international products, but can we just talk about how empty this place always is? Located at the basement of Leighton Centre with not a lot of obvious signs pointing to it, I guess that's no surprise. I find that this supermarket has a pretty large variety of, well, junk food. There are chips in every possible flavor and candies for the pickiest of snackers. In fact, the chips and chocolate aisles are the first things you see when you enter the supermarket, so this is a great place to hit up if you're planning a party and need lots of snacks. If you're looking to do some serious grocery shopping, you might be disappointed because there isn't a great selection of things like meat and vegetables, and even if you find what you need, you can get them cheaper elsewhere. They seem to have more international products than local produce, hence the higher prices. The cashier is a little hard to find here, and you enter and leave at different spots too. If I remember correctly, the cashiers are close to the cleaning products. You won't normally have to line up for long, and not all the cashiers are open because there just aren't a lot of shoppers compared to other supermarkets.

It's located…read morein United Centre, one of the busiest places in Admiralty and it's the only average supermarket around (besides Great, but this is a high end, more expensive one, and its concept is a little different, it's more of a Food Hall). This may be the reason why food overall it's pricier than other Fusion branches. Sometimes by quite a lot, but one can't deny its convenience. However, by 5 or 6pm they start selling off some fruit, veggies, dairy and meat discounted prices. And also, sometimes the discount is great. The other reason why I like this place is that it's not a grocery shopping destination for most people so it serves more for occasional purchases and it's never too crowded. And yet there is another reason to love it: it has an amazing counter at the front, covering the width of the supermarket floor: there is a bakery, a sushi area and a kind of 'convenience store' at the end of it. There are freshly baked cakes in the morning when I walk to the office and it smells like heaven. If you don't have a sweet tooth, just keep walking and you'll see a good variety of sushi and sashimi, prepared in front of you. The icing on the cake (and you'll agree if you like coffee) is that they serve Bolaven coffee, a fair trade organic brand from Laos. The Bolaven Farms café closed down its doors a few weeks ago but you can still enjoy their coffee at Fusion, and as opposed to most other products at this supermarket, it's relatively inexpensive. By now, I think I've given you a couple of good reasons to like this branch as much as I do!

Well, nice ones…read more Among closest ones to my place are also some ParknShops and Wellcomes (these last ones always funnily smelling of durians...). They are tiny, underground and a little crappy. For a quick purchase they're fine but if I'm shopping for the week or I'm after something especial, I head to Taste in Hopewell Centre. It's conveniently located on my way from work so it's usually in the evening when you can find me there. It's the only Taste supermarket in the North part of the Island (the other one being in Stanley), it opens early in the morning (8am) and has parking space. Right now it's undergoing renovation, but you can still shop as normal. They are relocating a take away area (sushi, sandwiches, salads, bakery and hot food) on the first floor with the main supermarket underground. It's big enough that you can find pretty much everything - there is a butchery, a cheese counter, a fresh fish counter, plenty of fruit and vegetables (and some of them cheaper than at wet markets I'm afraid), a shelf devoted to organic and locally grown veggies, a LOT of dairy products, a LOT of frozen foods...and on the other side there are the canned foods, bakery, nuts, drinks, etc., pretty much you can think of. There's even an area for alcoholic drinks and in the main aisle you can find especial offers. If you need something for your kitchen say, a pot or a pan, they also have an aisle just for that. Price wise, I still buy some goods elsewhere because they are better and cheaper: nuts and fish, for example, but they have excellent grass-fed beef from New Zealand (branded Greenlea) and some frozen veggies that I use for specific dishes. Avoid weekends, as in any given supermarket really.

It is opened 24 hours so it was convenient for us who were visiting HK, staying at the hotel next door who needed some food and medicine at the middle of the night. They have a good selections of products at a very affordable price. Service was ok. The lady patiently answered our questions about some products while she was busy stacking the shelves. The only thing is it's always crowded because of its central location so sometimes there could be lines. But it's Hong Kong it's crowded everywhere you go anyway.

However, I will base it on three factors that I believed to be universal truths about supermarkets: 1) Supermarkets are convenient. 2) Supermarkets have a lot of stuff. 3) Supermarkets are efficient. 1) Supermarkets are convenient - Check. This particular Wellcome is conveniently placed down the street from the Causeway Bay MTR, a little further down the street from a ton of buses, and a taxi queue is right outside. Easy to find and open 24 hours a day! 2) Supermarkets have a lot of stuff - Check. This is a very big Wellcome and it indeed, has a lot of stuff. Great one stop shop for all your reasonably priced grocery and prepped food needs, like sushi that goes on discount after 6ish. They've also got a household items section near the back in case the sole falls off your cheap ass shoe at 2AM and you need super glue stat. 3) Supermarkets are efficient - NO. NOT CHECK. How is it that at 6pm on a weekday, when the amount of shoppers is at an all time high, half the counters are closed? And how is it that the cashiers can see lines stretching almost all the way to the back, and they're still scanning items at the most leisurely pace possible? HOW IS IT THAT I CAN SPEND 2 MINS PICKING OUT MY DISCOUNT SUSHI AND 40 MINS IN LINE TO PAY FOR IT. I have never NOT had to wait at least 20 mins in line at this location. Word of advice, never buy anything that can melt for it will melt while you're in line. Warning: social rant ahead. Hong Kong, being the country with the worst income gap in the developed world, pays workers like cashiers absolute shit. It is highly unfortunate. With another Wellcome just up the street and not my most favorite grocery brand in Hong Kong, I was happy to see some additional "more upscale" grocery brand come to my hood. Although Fusion up the way is closer to my actual home and probably more preferred by me, I actually like this Marketplace and will be a patron from time to time. It is very open at the front and very inviting to step into the long tunnel of a store that is carved out in this space. I feel like they might be lacking more extensive options on their shelves, they have fresh produce that is well displayed and a good variety of the basics that I am tending to grab more regularly in a week (milk, yogurt, etc.). The store always seems clean and organized since my few times of popping in since they opened.
