You can find a variety of Japanese food products here, along with some other imported items as well. The dessert/cake section is quite extensive and there are multiple bakeries/desserteries. They have Japanese brands/companies but also a couple local ones as well. I tried their Japanese cheesecake tart place and it was quite good. The tart was fresh and warm. Their cakes are detail-oriented and glamorous like the ones you'd see at a department store in Tokyo. There's produce and meats sold here, but they're pretty pricey, as you can imagine. That week was their Taiwanese fair, so the market had an assortment of Taiwanese street food to eat. It can be super crowded here, so keep that in mind if you're not into crowds. But then, if you can't handle crowds, why are you in Hong Kong?

Case in point, it took me 6 months to discover SOGO's basement even though I lived, quite literally, next door. SOGO is a gigantic department store that attracts hordes of shoppers, many with luggage, every hour of every day. I knew all this, I saw the insane mass of limbs and luggage wheels every time I crossed the street. That's why i was deterred from going in until the last month of my stay. What I didn't know was that there was a food paradise tucked underneath all the people and the floors. The SOGO grocery store is similar to other high end grocery stores, but with a Japanese focus. Very clean, very large, and with many exotic varieties at a premium price point. There is an area in the middle that sells an assortment of Japanese snacks: dango, matcha tea, sun-dried squid, etc. To be honest, I never actually bought anything from the grocery store but I did go for SOGO's assortment of ready-to-eat food kiosks, all imported from Japan, all amazing. There's a quiche place with an array of the most beautiful quiches on display (fake, but still pretty), there's a cheese tart place (BAKE) that puts a dent in my heart and wallet because the tarts are so delicious and overpriced. There are Japanese sweets, Japanese cakes, and foreign snacks that a certain Japanese shop has repackaged for the Asian population. Beard Papa (cream puffs), Juchhheim (German layered cake), iCremeria (ice cream), Kobe Beef Meat Pie, all evil temptations for someone with an empty stomach. My favourite is Croissant Taiyaki (especially with apple filling): crispy, sugary, flaky pouches that marry French croissants and Japanese Taiyaki at HKD $18 a pop. Sinfully delicious. If you've never been here, drop by. If you're from North America, DEFINITELY MAKE A TRIP HERE. It's unlike anything I've ever seen (though I hear supermarkets like this are everywhere in Japan, lucky...) It may have been a blessing that I discovered it late in my time here in HK. Well, nice ones…read more Among closest ones to my place are also some ParknShops and Wellcomes (these last ones always funnily smelling of durians...). They are tiny, underground and a little crappy. For a quick purchase they're fine but if I'm shopping for the week or I'm after something especial, I head to Taste in Hopewell Centre. It's conveniently located on my way from work so it's usually in the evening when you can find me there. It's the only Taste supermarket in the North part of the Island (the other one being in Stanley), it opens early in the morning (8am) and has parking space. Right now it's undergoing renovation, but you can still shop as normal. They are relocating a take away area (sushi, sandwiches, salads, bakery and hot food) on the first floor with the main supermarket underground. It's big enough that you can find pretty much everything - there is a butchery, a cheese counter, a fresh fish counter, plenty of fruit and vegetables (and some of them cheaper than at wet markets I'm afraid), a shelf devoted to organic and locally grown veggies, a LOT of dairy products, a LOT of frozen foods...and on the other side there are the canned foods, bakery, nuts, drinks, etc., pretty much you can think of. There's even an area for alcoholic drinks and in the main aisle you can find especial offers. If you need something for your kitchen say, a pot or a pan, they also have an aisle just for that. Price wise, I still buy some goods elsewhere because they are better and cheaper: nuts and fish, for example, but they have excellent grass-fed beef from New Zealand (branded Greenlea) and some frozen veggies that I use for specific dishes. The fact that I could spend 45 dollars for 2 orders of the same food in the west and receive cat food is the great shame of Western Civilization and it's decline. It's why China specifically and Asia in general is the future. It's why the US is owned by China and will continue to be. Try this place. This particular Wellcome is conveniently placed down the street from the Causeway Bay MTR, a little further down the street from a ton of buses, and a taxi queue is right outside. Easy to find and open 24 hours a day! 2) Supermarkets have a lot of stuff - Check. This is a very big Wellcome and it indeed, has a lot of stuff. Great one stop shop for all your reasonably priced grocery and prepped food needs, like sushi that goes on discount after 6ish. They've also got a household items section near the back in case the sole falls off your cheap ass shoe at 2AM and you need super glue stat. 3) Supermarkets are efficient - NO. NOT CHECK. How is it that at 6pm on a weekday, when the amount of shoppers is at an all time high, half the counters are closed? And how is it that the cashiers can see lines stretching almost all the way to the back, and they're still scanning items at the most leisurely pace possible? HOW IS IT THAT I CAN SPEND 2 MINS PICKING OUT MY DISCOUNT SUSHI AND 40 MINS IN LINE TO PAY FOR IT. I have never NOT had to wait at least 20 mins in line at this location. Compared to Jason's Marketplace which is only a few blocks further, Fusion is actually larger. But I've also noticed some of the key items I purchase are markedly more expensive at Fusion. No bueno! Often, the produce looks rather sad and not-so-fresh. The staffers at the deli counter sometimes look put out when I make a request for sliced meats or cheese. And no matter the day or the time, there are always long queues. But...they're so close! Also, their Portuguese egg tarts are surprisingly good.

For local and produce, they do a fair job in terms of selection and quality, but if you have other convenient options, I wouldn't recommend coming here for produce. They do keep adding new things to the shelves so that makes it interesting for regulars like me. The down side is that they may one day decide to stop stocking the things that you have been expecting to find on a regular basis: for example i now go elsewhere for yogurt, tomato soup and orange juice. There are perpetual long line at check-out so you might want to avoid going there in the middle of the day on the weekends for small things.

This may be the reason why food overall it's pricier than other Fusion branches. Sometimes by quite a lot, but one can't deny its convenience. However, by 5 or 6pm they start selling off some fruit, veggies, dairy and meat discounted prices. And also, sometimes the discount is great. The other reason why I like this place is that it's not a grocery shopping destination for most people so it serves more for occasional purchases and it's never too crowded. And yet there is another reason to love it: it has an amazing counter at the front, covering the width of the supermarket floor: there is a bakery, a sushi area and a kind of 'convenience store' at the end of it. There are freshly baked cakes in the morning when I walk to the office and it smells like heaven. If you don't have a sweet tooth, just keep walking and you'll see a good variety of sushi and sashimi, prepared in front of you. The icing on the cake (and you'll agree if you like coffee) is that they serve Bolaven coffee, a fair trade organic brand from Laos. The Bolaven Farms café closed down its doors a few weeks ago but you can still enjoy their coffee at Fusion, and as opposed to most other products at this supermarket, it's relatively inexpensive. By now, I think I've given you a couple of good reasons to like this branch as much as I do!

Although Fusion up the way is closer to my actual home and probably more preferred by me, I actually like this Marketplace and will be a patron from time to time. It is very open at the front and very inviting to step into the long tunnel of a store that is carved out in this space. I feel like they might be lacking more extensive options on their shelves, they have fresh produce that is well displayed and a good variety of the basics that I am tending to grab more regularly in a week (milk, yogurt, etc.). The store always seems clean and organized since my few times of popping in since they opened.
