Yes, from today's perspective, the name is at the very least open to debate. That shouldn't be ignored. But once you've acknowledged that, you can turn your attention to why so many Ansbach locals have been coming back here year after year: the food. And the beer garden. Especially the beer garden. In the summer, the Mohren's beer garden is roughly what a watering hole in the savanna is to migrating herds of animals. Eventually, they all end up here. Families, regulars' tables, cyclists, people winding down after work, folks who meant to stay "just for a drink" and are still sitting there three hours later. The servers often have an astonishing amount on their plates. Sometimes it seems as though they have to coordinate twenty tables, three special requests, and a spontaneous mass migration all at once. Nevertheless, they remain friendly and keep their bearings far longer than most of the guests. Franconian cuisine does exactly what Franconian cuisine is supposed to do: leave you full, happy, and just a little bit too full to move. From hearty classics to light snacks, it has everything you need to convincingly explain afterward why you simply can't manage dessert today. The prices are pleasantly down-to-earth. You don't go home feeling like you've taken out a small loan. The interior is cozy, too. While the beer garden takes center stage in the summer, the restaurant itself is the place where, when the weather turns bad, you find yourself thinking, "Actually, it's pretty nice in here, too." The location is also ideal: right on the edge of the old town, exactly where historic alleyways and shopping streets meet. Bottom line: The Mohren is an institution. Not fancied up, not chasing trends, but simply a place where good Franconian food, a proper beer garden, and many satisfied guests have been reliably coming together for years. My wife and I ate at this restaurant on three different evenings whilst visiting friends in Ansbach; I cannot say enough about the place and its staff. If we were not returning to the States tomorrow we would be back repeatedly, and that is guaranteed. If you doubt the veracity of my claims, read my other reviews and you will see II have to have a good experience to gush as I am about to. In fairness I have not read any other reviews of the place, so I do not understand why anyone rated it below a 5. Finding it was a happy accident on a trip to Europe that saw us find two restaurants recomended by a popular mapping program which my wife and I are now convinced is rigged. Pros: ======== -A very friendly, if over-worked, staff. -Ample seating indoor and out -Literally everything we tried, both food and drink, was very tasty, and we each ordered different dishes every time. -They serve authentic Franconian fare. If you want American - or other styles of food - go someshere else. Better yet, visit that country. When in Rome... -Their service is prompt and friendly. -Their prices are reasonable. -Their bathroom is free. I absolutely loved this stop! We visited them for lunch at the recommendation of my local family member. They had plenty of seating but I'm sure on the busy days would need a reservation so be sure to check! Our server was such a lovely girl who was so nice and helpful to us! Our drinks arrived in a timely manner and our lunch soon followed. It's about time for me to write another review. BLUF: Zum Mohren continues to be a great place to enjoy food and outdoor ambience of living in Germany. I'd give them 4.5 stars if I could. We returned to this local favorite for the first time after COVID-19 health protection restrictions were finally softened to allow outdoor dining. Since the weather was very agreeable in the evening, we tried our luck. Actually, we stopped by earlier around 2:45 pm on Friday during our usual walking around the town time, but the kitchen had been already closed at 2:30. There were many tables occupied, but I found out many folks were enjoying just drinks during sunny afternoon. We were told it would open for supper again at 5:00, so we returned for supper. By the way, the kitchen closes at 9:30 pm. though the place is open until 11 pm. I really should've known better that we needed a reservation since folks were out in great numbers to enjoy sit-down meals and drinks after post-COVID lockdowns. Nonetheless, we were able to get a table with an understanding that it was reserved for later time by about one and one half hours. That would've been plenty of time for us to enjoy our meal. This was our first introduction to schaeufele which is slightly different from schweinhaxen, and even better! This became one of our top favorite places to order it, but they also make an awesome deer meal for the Autum season that reminds us of Thanksgiving back home. Their puten salat is also a crowd pleaser. We nearly always ordered their Hefeweizen and radlers, which are prefect in the warm months sitting in their bier garten, people watching and visiting with fiends/family. read more

The German Food Fu is very powerful here at the Mohren. Price point and quality cant be beat by any Restaurant in town, that Im aware of. They have a daily special for every day of the week. Open for Lunch and evening meal. I would make reservations if you plan on showing later in the evening or on weekends. It can get full very fast. Great Beer garten during the summer, great place to people watch. read more
