But once you've acknowledged that, you can turn your attention to why so many Ansbach locals have been coming back here year after year: the food. And the beer garden. Especially the beer garden. In the summer, the Mohren's beer garden is roughly what a watering hole in the savanna is to migrating herds of animals. Eventually, they all end up here. Families, regulars' tables, cyclists, people winding down after work, folks who meant to stay "just for a drink" and are still sitting there three hours later. The servers often have an astonishing amount on their plates. Sometimes it seems as though they have to coordinate twenty tables, three special requests, and a spontaneous mass migration all at once. Nevertheless, they remain friendly and keep their bearings far longer than most of the guests. Franconian cuisine does exactly what Franconian cuisine is supposed to do: leave you full, happy, and just a little bit too full to move. From hearty classics to light snacks, it has everything you need to convincingly explain afterward why you simply can't manage dessert today. The prices are pleasantly down-to-earth. You don't go home feeling like you've taken out a small loan. The interior is cozy, too. While the beer garden takes center stage in the summer, the restaurant itself is the place where, when the weather turns bad, you find yourself thinking, "Actually, it's pretty nice in here, too." The location is also ideal: right on the edge of the old town, exactly where historic alleyways and shopping streets meet. Bottom line: The Mohren is an institution. Not fancied up, not chasing trends, but simply a place where good Franconian food, a proper beer garden, and many satisfied guests have been reliably coming together for years. If Ansbach had an official after-work hub, it would probably be right here.

First German schnitzel did not disappoint. If I lived here I would definitely be a regular. Service…read morewas good and the restaurant had a very laid back vibe.

This restaurant was highly recommended by our friends, and we were not disappointed. We opted to…read moresit outside during very nice summer evening. We later found out that our choice was right since indoor section was rather warm and uncomfortable. They offer traditional Bavarian/Franconian cuisine. It must be a mushroom season, since there were quite a few dishes with wild mushroom sauce. I opted for a schweinbraten (roasted pork). It came with two large potato dumplings (klossen) and a dish of sauerkraut. It was very good, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The gravy was not creamy or thick like what I used to in the states, but it was very flavorful. Since potato dumplings are somewhat bland, you really need some good tasting gravy to enjoy them. A young man was our server, he spoke excellent English, and he was very helpful. I understand that he's a grandson of the owner. His brother is the chef. Service was prompt and courteous. You have to remember that dishes are served as they become ready unlike in the states. We were a table of five, and we were served in two shifts. You have to start when you were served not to let your food get too cold. It's a little awkward, but it is what it is. There are German and English menus. I noticed English menu is simplified, and it doesn't include many dishes German menu includes like the daily menu. We ordered from the daily menu (I discovered later that it really doesn't change too often). Overall, it was an excellent dining coupled with good conversation with friends made a near perfect evening experience. We'll be back again, I'm sure.

Very clean and very good food and service. Looking forward to trying out more of the menu.read more
