The website alone is an experience in charming kitsch, replete with dancing Elvis icons, delightfully cheesy music in the background, and a picture of the owner, Panos, with some seriously cool hair. Absolute heaven. We wanted to have a fun, no-foodies-allowed dining experience, and Ulysses completely fulfilled our palates and desires. We went on a Saturday, around 6:30, to have time for pre-dinner drinks, and make sure we got the train back out of Brum in time. From the first to the last, Ulysses provided a total dreamy Greek experience. The entrance to the building has fantastic classic Doric columns, with traditional Greek script on the sign. The entrance is lovely, very large, with comfy leather sofas to sit and wait for a table when it's busy. The entire place is huge, easily fitting about 70 guests. Imagine if you will, everything you'd ever dream of in a Greek restaurant. I'm not just talking about divine, falling-off-the-bone lamb. I'm talking murals of Athens, of the first Senate, of Socrates and Plato telling Aristotle to stuff it with the misogyny -- this place has it all. I'm talking Corinthian columns, fake marble design, plastic greenery all over, and huge pictures of the Parthenon: the cheesier the better. This is what Ulysses offers you. It's unapologetically kitsch in the extreme, without a hint of irony. The owner is Greek, the waitstaff are Greek, the food is Greek, and if you don't like the Greek flag, you'd better keep it to yourself. This place is so Greek, it makes My Big Fat Greek Wedding look milquetoast and WASPish. The owner greeted us himself, seated us, and chatted to us while we looked over the menus. He then recommended a white wine based on our request, which was dry, but with a bit of interest (hey, I don't give you a hard time about YOUR naff wine taste). We had the hoummus and kalamari for starters. The pitta bread tasted home made, nice and slightly crisp on the outside, warm and soft on the inside. Just like me. And three-day-old gummy bears. The kalamari was very nicely seasoned, not too gummy (come on, cephalapods, get a backbone), and lightly fried. The hoummus was WELL nice, great home made tahini, lemony and garlicy. My sister got the Sea Bass for her main, and even though we didn't come to this restaurant for the food, I've never tasted or seen such well cooked sea bass. It was cooked in a light herb crust, which was gorgeous to crack, and had obviously been slow cooked for a long time, as the fish was lovely, moist and flaked straight off. The spices and herbs had infused the fish, so it was delish. My main was the Aphrodite Chicken, which made me feel pretty just to order. It was lovely breast of chicken cooked in a cream, garlic and white wine sauce, fairly standard, but done very competently, and exactly what I wanted. Instead of a dessert, Panos brought us out to lovely, enormous cocktails, both of which were covered in little Greek flags, blue and white swizzle sticks, and a swizzle stick in the shape of an ancient Greek olympian (sans clothing, hurrah). We were too full by that point for more food, so I can't comment on the dessert. The place was about half full by the time we left, around half eight, and everyone, including the big hen party, seemed to be really enjoying themselves, and lots of laughter all round. The entertainment was a bald fellow with a keyboard, playing a lot of 80s tunes, and some Andrea Bocelli (Italy is close enough, I'm sure). There is a free car park in the back, and it's right near Birmingham New Street station. They do large parties and corporate dos, and I don't think you could do better than this place for an office party. We had an absolute blast, and can't wait to go back, next time with a camera.

I had a wonderful meal of which my Moussaka which I know now is layers of mince beef, courgettes, potatoes, aubergines with a cream cheese sauce.Well the vegetables were so fresh and the and the sauce divine. I will definately be going back for more very soon. The evening was such fun and the staff very attentive especially in explaining the dishes to a novice like me. The table had several empty glasses and plates while we were seated. The waiter handed us sticky food stained menus and advised us too order at the bar, and left leaving the table with dirty plates and glasses. I made a selection and went up to the bar too order, I waited 10 minutes for a barman to take my order as there was nobody behind the bar. I placed my order and asked for my table to be cleared, and was told to speak with a waiter. After finally clearing the table myself I received my order which was incorrect. It was at this point I advised that I wanted to complain and was told to contact customer services and I decided to leave the restaurant. I will not be going again.

The interior is very bright and cheery in a 50s-70s way, with mint green vinyl banquettes and funky chairs. The designers have clearly worked hard. There are lots of tiles on the walls and floor, which tends to reflect the noise bit. But it was all very clean. I was seated pretty quickly but then, despite being pretty quiet, it took over ten minutes to get served. I think they'd forgotten me, to be honest, and I hate having to wave to attract attention. Still, once served the olives and their new "Messina" craft beer arrived soon after, were nice, and the Pizza came swiftly. This was less good - a bit doughy and chewy to be frank. A pity. Service had perked up with my coffee arriving quickly. So an ok experience, just not memorable.

I tried to ring the store and press the bell on numerous occasions for help getting into the store and they offered nothing - they mentioned they ignored it when another guest went in, which proves the store does not care about disabled people to the point where they ignore a speciality disabled service bell, I'd accept the fact they ignored phone calls too down to them being busy but they weren't. To make the service levels worse, the staff member refused to move when I asked for a few minutes to look through the menu with my friend which made me want to get the hell out of there - the store wasn't too busy so she felt it was appropriate to just stand there and stare, despite asking her for a few more minutes before ordering on three occasions. I was also upset to find out regarding the unavailability of many menu items and drinks - I mean come on, are the suppliers and the staff having a competition for being so damn shitty? I've visited six different branches of Ask Italian (around 5% of their branches) until now my average has been 3.1 with experiences resulting in a three-star rating from Sheffield to Manchester, to a four-star rating in London, up until now I've never experienced a really bad branch which warranted less than a three-star rating which is what makes this all the more shocking, to have an experience so bad I had to leave. I felt unwelcomed so this place surely has to warrant a one-star rating to match that.

The food is freshly prepared and finger-licking good. The dance area is to one end of the pub, so you can avoid the noise if you just fancy a quiet catch-up with friends. The staff is generally witty and sociable. The owner tends to mingle and make himself known, although I find him eager to expose his own achievements than learn more about his customers. There is also an impressive function room, which has been converted from the old Wacky Warehouse, where in-house catering is provided.

I haven't experienced the full possibilities offered up by the menu, although it always looks very nice - I can state though, without a shadow of a doubt, that the full English is a satisfying beast of a brekky despite being pricier than the neighbouring Wetherspoons. Coffees and teas have always been satisfying, while soft drinks and other options are available for those who don't like their hot drinks. The bar is also host to the usual array of beers you would expect if you plan on hitting here for a relaxed start to a big night out, and you can expect to get served quickly as the place starts to empty out after 8pm. The table area outside is also a great spot to chill with a drink and people watch whenever we're lucky enough to get a bit of sun.

Opening/closing times are a bit unpredictable - they tend to close earlier if there's nothing on at the theatre.

Even though its not a traditional cocktail it was a bit depressing seeing it made, vodka in the glass and then a carton of fruit juice on top with ice. The barman didn't measure and I think I was only paying the extra for loads of juice and a bigger glass rather than I better quick to it. It taste 'watered down'. I on the other hand got my myself a 'short cocktail' also not measured but it was perfect and well blended. Mine was a Cherry Stag - "Jim Bean Black Cherry infused bourbon shaken with amaretto, bols cherry brandy and lemon juice" It was brilliant and with a cherry on top. I know my friend wasn't adventurous in her cocktail choice but I think it could have been better done especially considering hers was more expensive.
