The local zoo is generally one of our "must do" items since we have 2 small kids in tow. I wasn't planning on visiting the zoo except our Park Guell tickets gave us discount, so it made the decision much easier for me. The zoo's layout is quite good - there are 2 sides once you enter the main entrance, and each exhibit is not too far from each other so you can essentially follow the road and be able to see every single animal the zoo has to offer. The cafeteria is overpriced as expected, but at least the food is decent for what you have to pay. The souvenir shop's attendant wasn't as friendly as we expected, but we still ended up getting a few items so the kids have something to remember this place by. read more

I think I walked from the Arc de Triomf to this zoo without knowing there's a zoo at the end of this city park in Barcelona! Great surprise. I wanted to get away from La Ramblas, Gaudy, Picasso and the tourists just for one afternoon, and I succeeded. As soon as I entered the zoo, I felt like this zoo is pretty much a large open space zoo, meaning animals are not roaming around, but pretty close to the people inside the low fences. I don't know how far I walked, but saw a lot of animals in the zoo. I love to walk around zoo in any city. This zoo is perfect for that reason. read more

The Barcelona zoo is probably not a top attraction for many people when they come to Barcelona and I honestly can't blame them. After all, there are so many amazing things to see in Barcelona and you can see a zoo anywhere. However, my husband and I like to go to the zoo at least once during our trips. The zoo itself is next to a beautiful park, so it was nice to see the zoo and then go for a stroll. The zoo itself is pretty small. There aren't too many animals there, so you won't need too much time. The exhibits were pretty small for some of the animals. I really felt bad for the jaguar and leopards, but overall, they seemed clean and well maintained. The butterflies and aviary were nice. The layout is a little confusing, so I would definitely keep a map with you. Overall, it was a nice way to kill an hour, especially if you have children. read more

Great zoo in a beautiful park. This is a very large zoo for being smack dab in the middle of everything. The zoo is easily walkable to Barceloneta Beach and other great city sights. The zoo is well laid out and animal enclosures are older but well kept and for the most part large and shaded. There is also plenty of shade to escape summer sun as you're walking around the zoo. We went on a very hot 32° C day and we still enjoyed. Unlike a lot of the other places we visited in Barcelona, we found most employees only spoke Spanish here but we had no issues getting around or communicating. The food stands here are very pricy (4€ for a hotdog) so eat outside if you can. There is a large, very cool playground here. If you have kids this is a great zoo to visit. read more

There's been a zoo in Barcelona since 1892. Located in the Cuitadella Park, itself created out of the Bourbon fortress from which it takes its name, this is a traditional city zoo spread over thirteen hectares. Although constrained by the development around it, the zoo is attractively laid out with lots of trees and small areas of gardens, and a visit here could easily occupy a whole day - if you've sufficient stamina! Containing over 4,000 animals from 400 species, it covers most of the main groups that you expect to see in a zoo, from zebras and tigers, through apes, monkeys, deer, penguins, hippos, elephants, and assorted reptiles and birds. There is a small dolphinarium with regular shows, but a more grisly (and accordingly popular) attraction is feeding time in the reptile house, when live mice are fed to the snakes. Definitely not for the squeamish. Great efforts have also been made to modernise the enclosures and, although some of them are still small for the animals they contain (especially large mammals), there are no old-fashioned cells with iron grills. The conditions are rather better for the smaller animals, birds and lizards, with some attempt to recreate elements from their natural environments. Whether you find such conditions acceptable or distressing is up to you, but there's no doubt that it is hugely popular, and a great place to bring children, who are well catered for. The zoo has a long history of research, education and conservation, and the descriptions of the animals are correspondingly well done, in Spanish, Catalan and English. As well as several cafeterias and lots of self-service stations selling bottled drinks, there are picnic spots, two well-stocked shops, left luggage lockers, pony rides in summer, and a 'train' service which operates on a set route through the zoo, providing respite for tired feet. The zoo lays on programmes and tours for schools during term time, as well as special family days, and birthday parties. Much of the zoo is accessible for wheelchairs, although some of the ramps are rather steep. The prices are a little steep too, but then there is a lot to see, and someone has to pay for all that animal feed... The main entrance is in the Cuitadella Park entrance close to the França Railway station, although there is another entrance on Carrer Wellington, adjacent to the T4 tram terminus, five minutes' walk from the Cuitadella / Vila Olympica metro station. read more

This zoo is way too overpriced for what it is. Many of the exhibits were empty, and a lot of the animals that we managed to see just looked depressed. Grown adults and their children were banging on the glass of various exhibits, and it was beyond frustrating to watch. We also went on a day where at least 100 children were brought for a field trip, and the place was overrun with screaming kids everywhere. The park itself is decently well maintained and clean. The seals were cute and seemed happy enough. I wish there were more employees walking around who could make sure that children and their parents aren't banging on the glass walls. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you have a bunch of kids that you need to keep entertained for a couple of hours. read more

Had a great time at the zoo while I was visiting Barcelona! They had a great variety of animals and the zoo itself is hugeeee! It took us all day to walk around the whole thing and some parts were even closed for construction. There are so many different types of monkeys, birds and reptiles. They had lions, tigers and leopards! The big cats are always my favorites!!! They also had giraffes, elephants, and hippos! I really enjoyed this zoo and the price was worth it since they had so many different animals to see! read more

This is a zoo in desperate need of investment. A lot of abandoned or out dated infrastructure. Prices are high even by big city zoo standards (realizing that zoos are incredibly expensive to maintain). The animals seem fairly well taken care of (although I did see a small number of feral cats harassing some of the birds in outdoor cages). My kids had a good time, so if you are desperate for something to do with kids in Barca, this might work, but otherwise, I would stay away. read more

My best friend and I had an hour to kill during the day (we needed a break from all the bakeries). It's not the best zoo in the world, however, for a local zoo it is kinda cool. I have mixed feelings about animals in captivity for human entertainment but I wasn't overly bothered that I paid my 20 euro to get in. Some of the animals like the Kangaroo and Zebra were not in which was a piss off since that was the primary reason I wanted to go to the zoo in the first place. A lot of the animals looked unhealthy and sad, especially the penguins that need to be kept in Arctic weather and they were in the heat by a palm tree with their coats losing their shine. They haven't even eaten their fish as it sits in the bottom of the water untouched. What made it worth it was watching the monkey's for 20 minutes. It was hypnotizing watching them move like acrobats and contort their bodies. The way the walk, interact with each other is so much like humans it's eerie. It was weird 'cause I was able to connect with them through watching them unlike other animals that are just a wall with no connection. There were a few moments that touched me that proved that apes and monkey's do have some human emotion and qualities. The baby went up to her mother and starting sucking her thumb for comfort. Two monkey's shared an embrace while the other patted the other on the back for comfort. What really touched me and made me cry was I saw a monkey grab a metal object and try and scratch his way out. You can tell he tried it before as there was scratch marks on the window. He saw where the sliding door and tried to open it with this metal object. Clearly he was trying to get out. All the other animals were either sleeping or hiding. It was fun playing "Where's Waldo." Weirdly bull fighting is now illegal/banned in Spain but yet you can show dolphin shows. If you see the movie Blackfish that you'll understand why I have a problem with this. I can see why kids who don't understand the politics of animal rights would love this. It's the only way they can see certain animals up close. The gift store was tacky. They sold stuffed animals that aren't displayed at the zoo. I appreciate that it was an open concept zoo but still some of the exhibits clearly were too small for them. Not enough room to walk around in. Some of the animals looked unfit. Like I said, I have mixed feelings about Zoo's but given the negative we did get something out of it. This isn't the main focus of a trip but a time waster. read more

Very disturbing zoo. After visiting zoos in several countries I have to say that this was the most depressing zoo I've ever seen. I visited this zoo in June of 2014. Many of the animal enclosures are old, cramped, and dirty. There was a mother and baby Orang in a very small metal cage with a low ceiling. The bottom was covered in feces. It was so sad. If you are looking for a good zoo in Spain, visit the zoo in Madrid. It is much better. read more

Copito de Nieve was the main attraction when I was there. The extremely rare (which is to say, apparently one-of-a-kind) Albino gorilla was about a million years old by the time I saw him w/my own eyes, and he has mercifully gone on to glory since then. He wasn't a very friendly little snow-flake, but by golly, ask anyone that's lived in Barcelona in the last 100 years about their zoo, and I'll bet they mention Snowflake.... Sleep tight, Snowflake. Just amazing..so much to see and do. The animals are so close to you. The kids play park is brillaint fun, and the little train that takes you round allows you to get round the whole park easily. You will enjoy without doubt. We went hoping to see Snowflake the Albino Gorilla, we went round full park looking for him, just before we left we asked park keeper where is snowflake we saw him live on web day before he anwered in broken Scottish (which was very funny).......he is deed, dead capute.....hilarious. I loved Barcelona Zoo I thought it was a fantastic day out with plenty to see. My whole family enjoyed it especially the extremely talented Dolphin show. We went by coach from out hotel so travel to and from was easy. Prices are fair for a zoo experience. I would recommend this place to anyone, it is a great day out and there is something for everyone to enjoy my personal favorites were the elephants. read more

This was seriously a waste of time. I have been to plenty of zoos and love animals but this zoo was not a place I'd recommend or go back to. None of the animals moved or were interactive. Each exhibit had only a handful of the animals. I went during construction so a lot of the exhibits were closed. The exhibits that were open were small and extremely dirty. The only enjoyable part was that they had elephants and peacocks that walked around. But make sure if you go you purchase your tickets online for a discount! read more

I love zoos and what a brilliant one this is. It is a very open spaced zoo with many different animals to see. They even have dolphins, seals and sealions at this zoo which you dont always get to see in other zoos. They even have shows throughout the day. This zoo even had some animals that i have never even seen before i.e. a Drill which is like a Baboon but the Drill is much sexier. The chimp enclosure is also a must to see with its great open space for the chimps and the beautiful waterfall that they have. The pygmy hippo enclousure is the nearest i have ever got to the animal. All the animals seem all very happy and um horny dare i say. At this zoo you can also have pony/horse rides at a small fee. The only thing missing from this zoo in my eyes is they did not seem to have a bird flying session at all. Also at present there is works going on and new enclosures being built for the animals i.e. the elephant enclosure. Also I wish they would sell animal experiences as I don't think they do and i am sure if they sold experiences such as feed the penguin they could generate more money. I will deffinately visit this zoo again if I ever went to Barcelona again. Keep up the good work . read more

Going to the Zoo wasn't what we had in mind when we booked a weekend break to Barcelona. A City of culture with so much to see, especially in one weekend, but as we we flying out late on our last day, we decided to venture to the Zoo. Barcelona isn't Famous for it's zoo, but we really enjoyed our Morning there. It had lots of the old favourite animals you associate with zoo's and was also full of animals and birds that we had not seen before. It is also home to the world's only Albino Gorilla! WOW! He was worth the trip alone, looking almost human and majestic all in one go. To get around the zoo, we hired an electric buggy, a little lazy i know, but we didn't want to miss anything and it is quite a large place - this was also fun The cost of the zoo was cheap and well worth the money. Best zoo so far. Huge zoo, huge range of animals. Well laid out, not overly crowded, includes an aquarium as well. The exhibits are easily viewable, some of the peacocks and birds were just walking or flying to wherever without a care and just chillaxing. We didn't complete the entire zoo, too tired, but we were 80% done by the time we left. read more
