I've wanted to run this race for a few years now and finally did this past weekend. I didn't run…read morethis as a race at race pace, but approached it as a long run part of my training season and came in near the end. Beautiful course! There was a lot more shade and flat areas than I was expecting. Nice surprise! -About the first 4 miles are in Ashland neighborhoods. -Just before mile 5 you venture out onto some rolling areas among farm land. You're in the sun. -Around mile 6 you go through another little neighborhood and get some shade again. -After about 6.5 you're back to the large open farm lands and back into the sun with some little pockets of shade from random trees. -Around mile 8 you get some shade back here and there. -Mile 9 is sunny -Mile 10 takes you back onto the shadier areas for the rest of the course, few pockets of sun. -Mile 11 brings you a hill. From then on I feel the course had a gentle incline after the larger hill at mile 11. -A good number of people line the course towards the second half of mile 12 to help bring you to the finish line. Lots of friendly volunteers! There was a group of young ladies at the water stop just before mile 8 as full of energy as could be. They brought a large smile to my face with their loud chant of "MILE 8, DOIN' GREAT!" Thanks ladies! You should win the volunteer spirit award :) No fuel is given out on the course, make SURE you pack your fuel. From mile 10 on there is a water stop in every mile with both water and sports drink. This is a GREAT alternative to large city/suburban road races. There were 1,238 runners this year according to the results. Highly recommend this race.

The course was flat for the first mile and then it was rolling hills. You benefited from some downhills on the course and there was a good amount of shade too. Some suggestions for improvements would be additional porta-potties, more flavorful energy gel on the course (I didn't like the taste of what was handed out) and take out the mile long hill, haha. I would run this race again and plan to next year!

*Part of the James River Park system*…read more I walked along the James River in Richmond, VA when I visited in mid-June 2025. The path that I walked along was close to the Airbnb house that I rented for the weekend. It was a hot summer day but I enjoyed my walk next to beautiful homes. The river water that I saw was brown and not blue. I also noticed some murky and dirty parts but this river isn't necessarily for swimming (although people do swim in the river). I noticed a canoe or kayak at the Huguenot Flatwater so it appears that a lot of locals take part in kayaking. During my walk, I reached the Huguenot Flatwater section of the river which is named for the French Protestant refugees who settled there about 10 miles upstream. Since I walked along homes, there were lots of trees on the sides. I highly recommend that you bring a hat if you go during the summer months. I didn't bring a hat but I walked in the morning so the temperature hadn't reached the max temperature for the day (it was still hot though). It's a nice visit. Dogwood Dell holds a free concert series during the summer and music genres of all kinds are on the itinerary. There is no charge to attend and it is a great way to spend a balmy summer night. Plunky is a RVA legend so the show was amazing and he packed the theater. It was one of the best live shows I had seen in awhile and it was free! The area is so nice and quite large. No dogs are allowed in Dogwood Dell so leave your fury friends at home. My friend had to take her dog home and come back. I would definitely recommend getting there early so you can have your pick of seats. You can be simple and bring a blanket or go all out and bring a romantic picnic. I brought a nice portable chair, blanket and a small cooler of refreshments. I got there early enough to get my pick of where I wanted to sit. Vendors set up around the area as well so you can purchase food and drinks if you did not bring your own. Be sure to bring bug spray! The bathrooms were under renovation so there were tons of port a potties on the premises when I went. I think normally there are regular restrooms. I would bring wipes or a roll of toilet paper just in case. I can't wait to come back to Dogwood Dell to enjoy a night under the stars listening to fantastic music!
