She's kind and open hearted, welcoming and easy to talk to. The lessons and tools I've learned from her have been exceptionally helpful in combating the long ingrained issues I deal with. I found I could go in and just start talking without feeling judged, unheard, or invalid. Her approach to therapy is grounded in real neurological and behavioral science, which was a instant win for me. With some past counselors, I've often been put off by vaguely new age "feel good" sessions that never sought to address the actual underlying illness. After I've finished relaying some story (or ranting, if need be), she's always helped me see it through the underlying context of my illness. She's helped me to identify why I reacted or interpreted something in a certain way, and how to catch myself from repeating those thinking traps. Susan's given me the tools to identify certain modes of thinking and to break out of them - something I've never been able to do on my own before. The impact on my life (and my family's) has been immeasurable. The difference between how and I am now and the way I was before is so stark that it's almost like I was living in a different reality. The therapists themselves are highly trained and really put us at ease that we are in the right care. Calls and emails are always returned the same day, which is so nice when we need to cancel, get a copy of a statement or forgot to get a school note. I was surprised that they had coffee, a welcoming environment and a beautiful place to host the workshops, even the bathrooms were beautiful! Also, for people who aren't religious, we thought they'd be bible thumpers but they fed us snacks and a huge lunch and it was super welcoming without being over bearing religious like we had previously thought. People in our workshop were from all over Texas and drove up: temple, waco, San Antonio to do this, too cool!! Terri and her husband do an amazing job at what they do to deliver a nonfaith based workshop but they do have faith based workshops should you wish to do one where the topic focuses on biblical references. Fun conversations, one or two group activities but mostly exercises focused on you and your significant other, and many movie clips to help set examples of material covered in the workshop help make the state mandated 8 hours fly by. I can see us doing this again in the future after were married to help us solidify and reflect on ourselves as we as people constantly grow and have life experiences always shaping up. Finally, they have intern counselors that offer their help for relationship counseling for free should you need additional conversations! No judgement and positivity all throughout! Over the years, I have been moved between multiple providers due to provider turnover within the practice. I recently called for a refill and was told by the receptionist that I could not receive any medication, not even a short bridge refill, until I completed an appointment. I was given no advance notice that this would happen. In the past, I have been able to schedule an appointment and receive a small temporary supply until I could be seen. Because of this sudden refusal, I am now experiencing withdrawal symptoms, including brain zaps, after abruptly stopping a medication I have taken for years. My concern is not simply about scheduling. My concern is the lack of continuity of care, lack of notice, and lack of a safe medication plan for an established psychiatric patient. I understand the importance of follow-up appointments, but abruptly leaving a long-term patient without a bridge refill or provider review feels unsafe and unacceptable. This experience has been very disappointing after four years with the practice, and I would not feel comfortable recommending them based on how this was handled.
